Humans, all former slaves who escaped from a prison only to find that the war with aliens ended 100 years ago (see The Camp (1997)) Meanwhile, some aliens have settled on the planet and taken up farming. The young son, Ma'al, likes to go into a destroyed city to roam around the ruins. The humans are starving and many of them begin eating the vegetation despite the warnings in the camp that all plant life had been poisoned.
