A cargo ship is forced from hyperspace into a strange region of "dark matter" where some of the normal laws of physics seem not to apply - even the dead linger, unable to find their reward. Worse, contact with these specters is fatal to the living. If the crew can't escape quickly, they'll join the current residents, human and alien, eternally denied whatever lies beyond death...—CommanderBalok
When a cargo ship unexpectedly falls out of hyperspace, the crew suddenly find themselves in a dark void with no stars or planets visible. The ship is intact and there doesn't seem to be any immediate danger. They launch a probe that finds a military ship, the UNS Slayton which was lost 10 years ago and never recovered. Crewman Paul Stein's brother Kevin was aboard that ship. They soon discover an alien ship trapped in the void but when they approach it, they are fired on. Everyone aboard both ships appear dead but their spirits seem able to communicate with the living. While Paul tries to reconcile with his brother he also discovers a possible way out of the black void.—garykmcd
