- Cabot Cove's new priest finds himself in a sticky situation when a murderer confesses their crime and he recruits Jessica to help him uncover the truth without violating his oath of silence.
- Father Donald Barnes meets Jessica on the Cabot Cove beach, where he minds Eddie Frayne, who she once tutored as an English teacher, only presenting himself as a teacher. Soon after, in his capacity of parish priest ad interim (the incumbent is on sabbatical), he hears confession from a murderer, businessman Evan West's step-daughter. After his corpse is found on the beach, the priest can't come forth with any identification or details, only acknowledge Jessica's hints toward the arrested suspect, Eddie, didn't confess. So it's up to her, alone, to dig in the family's sordid past and come up with more relevant facts than the penitent girl realized.—KGF Vissers
- Father Donald Barnes has only recently arrived in Cabot Cove replacing Father Molloy, who is away visiting family. He hears Kelly Barrett's confession where she admits to having stabbed and killed a man. When he suggests she go to the police, she runs off. Of course, he is forbidden to divulge anything he's heard but seeks Jessica's advice. Soon after, Kelly's step-father, Evan West, a local businessman, is found dead on the beach. A local boy, Eddie Frayne, is found in possession of the dead man's knife. He found it on the dock where West was killed but Sheriff Metzger has him in jail. When the autopsy reveals that West did not die from the stab wound but drowned, it's up to Jessica to find the murderer. Jealousy is at the root of the murder.—garykmcd
