The First Appearance of Georgette
Hitchcoc8 February 2017
Rhoda returns from New York and tells Mary that she has taken a job there. The whole episode revolves around her leaving, from getting rid of her apartment to saying goodbye to everyone. There are a couple of precious scenes in the newsroom. One of the highlights is the arrival of the swinging Jack Riley, who has designs on Rhoda's apartment. It's not a great episode but there is some sadness and some contrition. Ted is his usual cheapskate self. Mary has to also lie to Riley or she could be in for some terrible times in the future. The one thing that will manifest itself in the future is the arrival of Georgia Engel as Georgette with whom Ted is attracted.

Warning: Spoilers
The talented Valerie Harper skillfully portrays the obnoxious and annoying Rhoda, who is supposedly moving back to NY after living in Minneapolis for awhile. Most of the show centers around everyone saying goodbye to Rhoda and all of the various characters reminiscing about their friendship with Rhoda and how they will miss her etc.

Rhoda has given notice to quit her Minneapolis job, she's also given notice that she's moving out of her apartment, and she's pretty-much ready to move-back to NY.

Mary has meanwhile planned a going-away party for Rhoda and everyone shows-up to wish her well on her move back to NY.

However....🤡

Apparently Mary has told Rhoda one-too-many times that she wished that Rhoda wouldn't leave Minneapolis.

After all of the planning, after all of the special arrangements, and after all of the changes that Rhoda has put everyone through with her moving-plans,Rhoda then changes her mind about moving ! Rhoda now has decided to remain in Minnesota.

Rhoda makes this decision with the assumption that she can simply tell her boss in Minneapolis that she has changed her mind and isn't quitting her job after-all.

Rhoda also assumes that she can just keep the apartment that her landlord has already advertised for rent.

In real-life,Rhoda would most-likely be out of luck as far as getting her job back after quitting. Rhoda would also be out of luck with keeping her apartment that she said she was moving out of. Jobs and housing are serious matters !

Several different people her have made some rather-important decisions around Rhoda's planned move back to NY,but suddenly,Rhoda changes her mind about the move and everyone else has to make adjustments around Rhoda's fickle and rather selfish decisions.

It seems that sooner or later Rhoda would surely have to deal with the consequences of her flaky and selfish behavior, but other people always seem to end-up dealing with the consequences instead.

Apparently a reprieve from Rhoda isn't in the game-plan after-all.

On a lighter and happier note, the delightfully sweet and silly Georgette makes her debut in this episode and she makes an immediate impression on the wonderfully wacky 'Ted Baxter'.

Most interesting for one thing

Georgette would become a regular on the show and eventually marry Ted Baxter. In this episode she's introduced as a co-worker of Rhoda who is invited to Rhoda's going-away party. She and Rhoda are both window dressers at an apartment store.

Here, Rhoda, while on a trip to visit her family in New York, is offered a primo job at Bloomingdale's. She takes the job but Mary is convinced she won't really leave Minneapolis and all her friends. This plot would be reused on The Bob Newhart show a year later when Jerry departs for Tahiti and Bob Hartley is convinced he'll never really leave.

Another connection to The Bob Newhart show is an appearance by "Mr. Carlin".

Funny episode.

Extra funny

Sheer brilliance.

Rhoda is really well used here and there are many funny, and also some poignant, scenes.

But the final act, a party at Mary's, hits new heights of surreal comedy. Watch Lou's fantastic reactions throughout especially the miscommunication with the sleazy Barry Barlow (Jack Riley). Things then go to the next level as Rhoda's colleague Georgette (Georgia Engel) makes her first appearance in the series as a guest at the party. Her crazy behaviour and instant rapport with Ted is a scene-stealing knockout.
