This was the only episode directed by Charles Rondeau, who handled many sitcoms, particularly LOVE AMERICAN STYLE. He may have been hired due to this versatile cast, and perhaps a dark comedy angle.
Mannix tries to stop the attempted murder of a famous author (who writes about real murder mysteries) before he spills the proverbial beans. This would be a recurring theme with the series; Joes clients either talk too much or write too much, however... stay tuned for some wild moments. There's the catch.
Larry B Mann is a standout here as Orlando. Larry was a master of characters and voices for decades. He had memorable role (for all us kids) on THE GREEN HORNET a year earlier, playing a "silver" alien from outer space. Larry had that unpredictability about him which made him so much fun to watch.
Surprise guest star is Ted Cassidy (Lurch on the ADDAMS FAMILY), playing a dangerous gentleman called Felipe. He looks and acts like Lurch, only lighter on his feet and a much better dresser. The wardrobe department worked overtime fitting his clothes. He is a force to be reckoned with, somewhat in the tradition of a JAMES BOND super villain. Ted is a scene stealer here, hands down.
Michael Strong, best at slippery types, is instrumental in this story, playing Dwight. He appeared many times on CANNON and BARNABY JONES. Teenage Paul Peterson (from the DONNA REED SHOW) is also thrown into the mix as the boyfriend of Dwight's daughter.
In the cult department, look for Patty Chandler (as Julie), who appeared in many of the 60s bikini flicks, such as DR. GOLDFOOT AND THE BIKINI MACHINE, opposite Vincent Price. Once you work with Price you are a "special" star.
Written by yet another master of sitcoms(?), Ben Gershman, who would soon be writing for JULIA. By the way, Patty Chandler's character is called Julie? Interesting. A REAL rollercoaster ride, especially nearing the end. Recommended. SEASON 1 EPISODE 23 CBS dvd box set.
