- Two female bounty hunters, one of whom is a cold-blooded killer, arrive in town and stir up trouble while on the trail of a notorious outlaw.
- Kate and Maddie Stokes, two bounty hunters, arrive in Four Corners looking for stagecoach robber Dell Speeback. They have a connection to Speeback that isn't obvious at first. Meanwhile, J.D. gets shot and Bucks tries to get close to Kate, while Judge Travis has reasons of his own for seeking that Speebeck gets justice.—Gislef
- Vin and J.D. stand outside the courthouse, and watch the hangman check the gallows. Casey comes up and they all agree that the prisoner, Garber, is going to hang. Casey invites J.D. to watch the hanging with her, and he points out that a hanging isn't someplace to take a girl. He figures he should take a girl to a haystack, and Casey would rather go to a hanging and walks off.
Chris and Oren bring out Garber after the trial, and Oren tells Garber that he can spare his life if he tells them where his boss Dell Speeback and the rest of the gang are. Garber refuse and Oren says that someone is going to hang for the stagecoach robbery his friend was killed in. Dell's men ride into town, shooting, and Chris gets Oren to cover. Garber shoves J.D. an d runs to his rescuers, while Vin tries to stop the gang and gets shoved into a hitching post for his troubles.
Chris returns fire, killing one man and wounding another. A wounded bailiff shoots Garber dead, Chris and J.D. kill two others. The rest of the gang rides out of town, although another one is killed in the process. Kate and Maddie Stokes ride into town and check out the last man down, and Nathan and Ezra arrive and Nathan checks on Vin, confirming he has a cracked rib. J.D. goes after the gang, and Ezra goes with him.
Chris and Oren go over to the Stokes, and Buck joins them. Kate says that she and her sister are bounty hunters, and Nathan confirms the man he'll live. The man is Dell's scout, Kirkland. Kate says that they figured bounty hunting was safer for women, and Maddie asks for directions to the nearest saloon. Kate tells her sister to stay out of trouble, and Maddie sarcastically says that she always does. Kate tells Oren that she'll cooperate but Dell is her,. Chris tells her that she'll get her bounty, and Buck suggests they let the Stokes have a go at bringing in the gang. Oren tells Kate that they'll come and find her as soon as Kirkland is conscious. Kate agrees and walks off to join Maddie.
At the saloon, Maddie is downing several shots. Josiah is drinking alone, and Maddie goes over and hits on him. When Josiah says that he was a former preacher, Maddie tells him to stay away from her because preachers are bad luck. Ezra comes in and admits to Josiah that he lost J.D., and offers Maddie his business acumen to make her famous. Maddie isn't interested.
J.D. comes in and asks Josiah about the female bounty hunters. Maddie comes over and says that J.D. will do fine, and drags him out while Ezra chuckles and then asks Josiah what just happened.
Kate is buying supplies at the general store when Buck comes in and hits on her. She makes it clear she isn't interested, and figures he thinks "girls" are too weak to hunt men. Buck suggests that she tell him what it is that he thinks of women, and Kate says that he likes to have women around to look at, touch, keep warm at night, or kick. He admits that he likes to look at women and touch them, and turns on the charm. Buck tips his hat to Kate and leaves, and Kate goes her way.
Maddie drags J.D. into the livery and starts to undress him. He says that he "kinda" has a girl, and Maddie points out that he doesn't seem too convinced about it. Maddie tells him to stop talking about other girls and kiss her, and kisses him. J.D. tries to make small talk and Maddie isn't interested, and yanks him to the floor.
Vin leaves Nathan's office, and Nathan tells him that he should take it easy for a while. Kate comes up and wants to talk to Kirkland, who is under Nathan's care. Nathan agrees and tells her to wait until he takes Vin downstairs, and Kate seemingly agrees. Once Nathan and Vin leave, Kate goes into the office and puts a knife to Kirkland's face. He's tied to the bed to keep him prisoner, and Kate tells Kirkland to start talking and asks him where Dell is. Kirkland insists that Dell will hurt him worse than Kate ever could, and Kate drives the hilt of her knife into Kirkland's wound.
Nathan comes back upstairs and hears Kirkland yelling in pain. Kate walks out before Nathan can come in, and goes on her way.
Casey runs to the saloon, and asks Ezra and Josiah as they come out if they've seen J.D. They feign ignorance, just as Oren walks up and says he saw J.D. heading to the livery. Casey goes there and finds a barely dressed J.D., and Maddie dragging him back. The girl isn't interested in hearing J.D.'s explanations and storms off.
That night, Kate and Maddie are drinking at the saloon, and Chris is drinking nearby and makes eye contact with Kate. A man comes over and hits on Maddie, who hits him in the face with her empty beer glass. Kate pulls Maddie out as Buck and Oren come in, and sit down with Chris. He warns Buck that there's probably nothing nice that the Stokes are hiding, and Buck expresses concern that the sisters might get in trouble going after Dell's gang. Oren agrees and says that he's not going to let Dell and his gang get away again. He wants Dell caught and hung, and Chris nods in agreements.
At Dell's camp, the leader of the raiding party, Bart goes to Dell's tent and tells him that Garber is dead, and they were outnumbered and drove off along with their powder man getting killed. When Bart suggests that at least they can split the powder man's share of the money, Dell grabs him, cuts his face, and says that it's something to remember Garber by. Bart says that Kirkland got shot and caught, and says that the Stokes were there. Dell chuckles as he figures Kate is coming after him, and says that it could get interesting.
The next morning, Kate and Maddie prepare to find out and find Chris, J.D., Josiah, and Buck waiting for them. Kate claims that Kirkland didn't say anything about Dell, and tells them to stay out of their way. Vin and Ezra come out on the street, and Ezra says that they're ready for Dell if he comes for Kirkland. Casey watches J.D. go with the others, and ignores him when he looks her way.
Outside of town, Maddie says that she has to reset her saddle and they stop. She asks Kate how they're going to shake the four men, and Kate says that they can't on the trail. J.D. rides up and offers Maddie a hand, and she refuses his help. When he tries to explain that he already has a girl, Maddie tells him that he wasn't that good. Josiah rides up and asks why Maddie thinks preachers are bad luck. She says that every time preachers are around, someone dies. Amused, Josiah rides away.
Chris approaches Kate and tells her and Maddie to stay back if they come up on Dell. Kate says that they can handle themselves, and Buck tells Chris to ease up on the Stokes. Chris says that just because they're women, Buck can't trust them.
J.D. rides alongside Maddie and asks if she's nervous, and she doesn't have to worry about Dell. When he says that they'll see him at the end of the rope, Maddie pulls her gun and tells him not talk about rope. Josiah rides between them and asks if there's any other superstitions Maddie has that they should know about. Maddie says that she just doesn't like talking about hanging and rides ahead.
In Four Corners, Vin hears crying and goes into the livery to find Casey sobbing. She asks Vin what a man would want from a female bounty hunter, and if the man is J.D. Vin tells her that it might not have anything to do with Kate, and J.D. is just sowing his wild oats. Casey angrily says that she has oats, too, and she's going to sow some... starting with Vin. She shoves Vin into a stable, and he says that he isn't interested, and Casey says that she'll find someone who is interested in her oats and walks out.
Casey goes to the saloon, smiles, and tells Ezra that he looks handsome. When Ezra says that she's pretty, Casey invites him to the livery stable to help her sow some wild oats. She insists that she and J.D. are through, and Ezra pleads an obligation to the brotherhood of man, about waiting before he makes advances on her. Casey doesn't believe him, throws a drink in his face, and storms out past Vin. Ezra wonders what just happened.
The party finds Dell's camp and they split up, Kate and Maddie standing guard. Once the men split up and circle around the camp, Kate figures that Dell will sneak off in the opposite direction and they'll be waiting.
The four men attack the camp and the gang returns fire. Buck tells J.D. to go back to the Stokes and watch out for them. The sisters circle around, but Dell gets the drop on them. Kate draws her gun but puts it back when Dell asks if she needs it. He tells her to toss it away instead, and Kate does so along with Maddie. Once they do, Dell raises his gun off of them. Dell then says that he planned on killing them, but he says that he's missed them, walks over, and strokes Kate's face. Kate grabs his wrist to stop Dell, and Maddie tells Dell that she wants her share of the money.
Kate says that she knows where the money is, and Dell talks in his sleep. Dell figures that he has to kill her after all, and J.D. arrives, aims his rifle at Dell, and tells him to drop his gun. Kate takes Dell's gun.
The surviving gang members ride off, and Chris tells Buck and Josiah that they'd better find J.D. and the sisters.
Maddie tells J.D. to go, and he asks her what's going on. She tells J.D. to shut up and cuts open Dell's saddle blanket, and Dell keeps asking her if J.D. is her boyfriend. Kate warns Maddie that Dell is baiting her, and he invites her to shoot him. Maddie reveals money in the blanket, and J.D. wants to know what's going on. She tells J.D. to shut up, and then she takes out her gun and shoots J.D. in the side.
Dell tells Kate that he could have shot him, but she's a woman. He turns away and Kate pistol-whips him from behind. She grabs Maddie and they ride off, just as Buck arrives and finds the wounded J.D. Dell rides off on his horse, and Chris and Josiah run over in response to Buck's yells. J.D. says that Maddie shot him, and the others get J.D. on his horse. Buck tells Chris to after the women and gun them down if he has to, then takes J.D. back to town.
In town, Buck takes J.D. to Nathan. Nathan runs over, along with Casey who hears Buck's yell. Vin holds Casey back, and Casey wonders what she's done.
Chris and Josiah cut off the Stokes, capture them, and take them back to town. After Chris locks them in a cell, Kate says that she has nothing to say to him about Dell. Josiah says that the money they found on them came off a robbery where people were killed, and Maddie says that the money was hers before Kate cuts her off. Chris figures that the sisters were involved in the stagecoach robbery, and says that they'll have to hang Maddie.
Once Chris and Josiah leave, Kate tells Maddie that she'll think of something and get Maddie out of the cell.
The next morning, Nathan tells the waiting Buck, Oren, and Casey that he got the bullet out but J.D. lost a lot of blood... and he doesn't know if J.D. will pull through. Buck says that he's going to do something about the sisters, and Oren tells him to let a court decide. Unimpressed, Buck, asks the judge if he'll know the difference between a man's neck and a woman's, and walks away. Ezra arrives, and Nathan says that they need to figure out what the Stokes are up to and he has an idea.
Later, Nathan takes Kirkland to Ezra, who claims that he's a lawyer. Ezra says that Kirkland only committed a misdemeanor and was unjustly imprisoned, but they need to offer Oren something about the Stokes so the judge will give Kirkland leniency. Kirkland says that Kate was Dell's girl, and all she did was try to keep Maddie out of trouble. The robber tells them that Kate would have shot Dell a long time ago is she could have, and Dell used to beat her a lot. Kirkland says that Maddie shot the passenger during the stagecoach robbery. When Ezra expresses his disbelief that Maddie is a stone-cold killer, Kirkland says that Maddie wears the wedding ring she took from the passenger like a prize on a chain around her neck. Ezra says that he'll look into it, and tells Kirkland that he's in luck because they can only hang Kirkland once no matter how many people he's killed.
Later, the men get the ring and show it to Oren in Maddie's trial. He confirms that it belonged to his friend, then gives a verdict that there's no evidence that Kate committed any crime. Oren then tells Maddie that she's been found guilty of murder and sentences her to hang the next day at dawn. Maddie panics and screams that she'll kill Oren, and Chris take Maddie away.
That night, Kate goes to the saloon. Buck is there, and Kate tells him that when Maddie was 7, her mother hung herself in the barn and Maddie found her. He says that's no excuse for murder, and Kate talks about how their father got drunk and beat them. Kate asks Buck to talk to Oren and ask him to commute Maddie's sentence to a prison sentence. Buck tells Kate that Maddie should have thought of that before she started riding with Dell, and Kate says that she didn't know Dell was bad when she first met him. It wasn't until later that she found out Dell was worse than her father. He says that his spent his whole life thinking women were everything good, and that got his friend shot. Kate says that she's human, and Buck says that J.D. is human as well and the bullet proved it. With that, Buck walks out.
Chris and Oren are at a table, and Chris figures that J.D. will make it. Kate comes over and says that she wants to make a deal for Maddie's life. Chris figures that she has nothing to offer, and Kate says that she can give them Dell.
Later, Kate is walking down the street when Dell approaches her. He grabs her and puts a knife to her throat, and she says that she knew he'd be watching the town. Kate says that she knows where his money is and she'll help him get it back if he helps her free Maddie. Dell smiles and says that's his girl.
In the jailhouse, Josiah brings Maddie dinner and leaves it there because she doesn't want him around. He says a prayer for Maddie before he goes, and once he closes the cell door Maddie asks him if she's going to Hell. Josiah says that there's always redemption for a sinner, and Maddie tells him that she's scared. He points that the man she killed and J.D. were scared. When Maddie says that she never thought about it, Josiah tells her to think about it and maybe that will be her path to redemption. Maddie asks Josiah to say the Lord's Prayer with her, and Josiah recites it.
Buck goes to Nathan's office and tells the unconscious J.D. that he's sorry.
Kate, Dell, and Dell's men load their guns and prepare to ride into town to rescue Maddie.
J.D. wakes up and finds Casey asleep, her head laying on his chest. She wakes up and smiles, and he says that he thought he was going to die before he could apologize to her, and how much he cares about her. Casey tells him to hush and smiles.
Dell and two of his men walk down the street and shove a drunk out of their way. Kate goes into the jailhouse and tells Maddie and Kirkland in the next cell that she's there to rescue them. She finds the cell key and says that Dell is coming.
Bart goes to the livery and has the others wait outside. The money box is hidden in one of the stables.
Kate tells Maddie that they're not going to hang her and finds the key.
As the gang discovers that the money box is empty, Nathan and Ezra emerge from hiding, training guns on them. Outside, Buck, Chris, Vin, and Josiah get the drop on the rest of the gang.
Dell enters the jailhouse and Kate aims her gun at him. He raises his hand, and Kate pulls the trigger but there are no bullets in the chamber. Dell trains his revolver on her and pulls her to him, then shoots Maddie in the chest. The gang leader tells Kate that Maddie is free now and kisses Kate. She screams, pulls free, and goes to the dying Maddie. As Dell prepares to kill Kate, Buck bursts in and shoots Dell dead. Josiah is with Buck, and recites the Lord's Prayer again as Maddie looks at him. As Maddie dies in Kate's arms, Josiah finishes.
The next day, Buck and Casey take J.D. out in a wheelchair for fresh air. Kate is getting on her horse, and J.D. asks his friends to take him back when he sees her. Buck goes over to Kate and she tells him that she owes him thanks for not telling Oren that Kate was trying to break Maddie out. He says that Oren probably knew anyway and figured Kate already paid enough for it.
Buck asks where Kate is going next, and Kate says that she's going to her family farm. He says that Kate fought hard for Maddie, and she can do the same for herself. Kate tells Buck that she was wrong about him and he's not like the others, and mounts up. off. Buck jokingly says that he's told he's one of a kind, and Kate smiles at him and agrees, then rides off.
