- Father Mulcahy counsels a guilt-ridden GI Corporal Josh Levin (Joe Pantoliano) who swapped tags with a dead colleague. The mistake was caught because the blood type on the dog tags didn't match the actual blood type the GI had been given at battalion aid before they shipped him to the 4077th. The dog tags said A+, when Josh had a B+ blood type. Houlihan says its near impossible for the army to get the dog tags wrong. BJ and Houlihan write to I-corps to get the mistake corrected on Josh's dog tags. Klinger informs Josh that there are no clothes in the laundry with his tags on it (this is another red flag as all uniforms are tagged with the name of the soldier wearing them).
The dead colleague had orders to return back home in 2 weeks time. The GI calls in Mulcahy and confesses that his real name is Gerald Mullen. He and Josh Levin were out on patrol 2 nights ago and were caught in an ambush. All of his buddies were killed and the Chinese even came over to check if they got everybody. Gerald vowed never to return to the front line if he ever got out alive. Josh was killed and had papers to leave for US in 2 weeks. Gerald was wounded, and he swapped the dog tags and took the discharge papers as he was desperate to go back home. He wants Mulcahy to absolve him, but Mulcahy wont do it as Gerald plans to continue down the same path and is virtually unrepentant. Mulcahy gets Levin's mails from his family and reads them to Gerald. Gerald realizes that pretending to be Levin, would hurt Levin's family more than anything. Gerald sees the error of his ways and decides to give up the pretext of being Josh.
B.J. and Charles consider ways of keeping a soldier-salesman quiet. Corporal Rice (Squire Fridell) is wounded, but that doesn't stop him from selling mutual funds and other financial instruments to all and sundry in the post op wards. He tries to sell a growth fund to Winchester, but he is far too sophisticated to be lured into Rice's scheme. His own arm is in a sling, but he is arm twisting everyone into buying something. Margaret falls for his spiel and buys 60 shares of the security fidelity fund. So, Winchester conjures an imaginary vocal cord problem and tells Rice that the only cure is to not speak for 24-48 hrs.
Hawkeye and Margaret help another GI Pvt Jim Mathes (Dirk Blocker) get even with the woman who jilted him. His girlfriend Gloria, dumped him for a rich banker and wants her picture back. Mathes is very depressed over the gold-digger. Houlihan is really concerned about him and hates the woman who did this to him, she wants to even the score with the scheming witch. Hawkeye collects girlfriend and young female relative pics from all over the camp and send it back to Gloria. He even writes a letter saying Mathes no longer remembers what Gloria looks like, and so she should pick her pic and send the rest back to him.
