Edward Woodward travels to 'America' or what looks like a beach off the coast of Kent.
In 1931 the body of Starr Faithfull was found on a Long Island beach. She was earlier reported missing by her mother and stepfather. They painted a portrait of a reserved chaste 25 year old woman who did nothing wild.
Once her dead body was discovered. Stepfather Stanley Faithfull gave a different picture. One that delved into pedophilia by the rich and famous. Since the age of eleven, Starr was raped by a family member. Andrew James Peters, a former mayor of Boston and a friend of a future president of the USA.
The parents hushed it up by extorting money from Peters. Especially as Stanley had failed business ventures so always needed money.
Woodward tells a story of Starr Faithfull, who grew up in circumstances of alcoholism and constant sexual abuse. The parents were non conventional, when Starr was sent to a psychiatrist. The parents were told that her sexual needs had to be satisfied. So they found an artist who was more than willing.
No one really knows how Starr died and if it was murder, who did it. Conjecture is that it could had been Peters, the mob who wanted to blackmail Peters, even her stepfather. It might had just been suicide.
It was unusual that an American crime turned up in this British show. Especially as the accents were so dodgy and none of it looked like an American setting.
The Falling Starr saga was the inspiration for the film BUtterfield 8.
