The final scene where they cross the bridge was TV's first use of the "process shot" (a moving image projected on a screen behind live actors). In fact they were only allowed to film one take of the Pontiac crossing the bridge, so the car in the background in the process shot is actually the Pontiac the Ricardos and Mertzs are riding in.
The title is based on one of Al Jolson's greatest hits, "California, Here I Come".
"California, Here We Come" marked Kathryn Card's first of several appearances as Lucy's mother, Mrs. McGillicuddy. The actress had initially debuted on the series the previous season, in a different role as Minnie Finch, in which she responded to Lucy and Ethel, who were pretending to be door-to-door survey takers, a risky-for-the-time line referring to the Alfred Kinsey scientific studies of Americans' sexual behavior.
The Ricardos and the Mertzes were crossing the George Washington Bridge towards New Jersey on their cross-country trip to Hollywood. In one of the final scenes from the Jersey side, the bridge has just one level for traffic. Construction for the lower level would not begin for another 4 1/2 years (June 2, 1959) and would not be finished and operational until August 29, 1962, three years later.
The glass windshield is missing in the profile shot of the car, when Mrs. Trumble & Lucy's mom are saying goodbye to them.
