Nifty Noel episode
Woodyanders25 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Christmas Eve on the Hill. Washington (an excellent Taureen Blacque) tries to make amends with the widow (a stand-out angry turn by Micole Mercurio) of the store owner who he accidentally shot dead. Hill (a fine Michael Warren) gets a visit from his deadbeat dad Reggie (a lively and engaging performance by James McEachin). Belker (essayed with trademark growly gusto by Bruce Weitz) goes undercover as Santa and has his hands full dealing with an annoying kid (a delightfully incorrigible portrayal by Khalif Bobatoon) who knows that he's a cop.

The key plot line about Washington struggling to deal with his mounting guilt proves to be quite potent, with both LaRue (a spot-on Kiel Martin) and Goldblume (a fine Joe Spano) doing what they can to help Washington out. The scenes between Belker and the kid are simply priceless; Hunter (a nicely loopy James Sikking) likewise has a funny scene in which he asks for advice from Goldblume about his Jewish girlfriend. The sequence at the children's hospital is very sweet and uplifting while an action set piece involving a bunch of cops dressed up as Santa, elves, and reindeer busting several hoodlums rates as a wonderfully surreal highlight. Lee Weaver has a hilarious bit as rowdy drunken bum Buck Naked. Best of all, this episode neatly captures how things are always chaotic on the Hill even during the yuletide season.

Good Holiday Episode
Hitchcoc16 July 2021
Every series has a Christmas episode. This one is better than most. Set in the precinct's efforts to entertain kids at a hospital, most are in a festive mood; but there are some ugly perpetrators (murderers) on a crime spree. Incidental to this is Washington, filled with guilt for killing the storekeeper three months earlier. Belker brings in a boy who hates cops and gets in the way of an arrest. Belker plays Santa Claus and shows his love of Christmas; then he goes home to a bowl of soup in an empty apartment.

Warning: Spoilers
The first fully Christmas-centric episode of the series takes place on Christmas Eve. While a gang of violent robbers is going on a vicious spree, Bobby receives a visit from his deadbeat father (James McEachin, "Play Misty for Me"), Neal tries to apologize to the widow (Micole Mercurio, "The Client") of the store owner whom he'd mistakenly killed, and Belker goes undercover in a Santa Claus costume. He actually witnesses Pickpocket (Nick Savage) in action, but this time he's outed by a troubled kid (Khalif Bobatoon, "Enemy Territory") who recognizes him as a cop and who has a distrust towards authority figures.

A potent mix of humor and heart, 'Santaclaustrophobia' was most compelling in scenes with Bobby and Neal, who are both touching and sympathetic. Andy urges Bobby to try to patch things up with his old man, while J. D. tries to give Neal advice. Frank takes the kid aside and makes a connection with him, in another wonderful sequence. There are some hearty laughs to be had watching some of the characters dress up to perform a sort of Christmas play for some children in a hospital; later, in a solid action sequence, they catch up with the robbers while hurrying to take off their Christmas costumes.

Ending the episode are two especially powerful sequences, as we see Belker at home, alone but obviously content as he settles in to watch the Mr. Magoo Christmas special, and we see Lucy recuperating from a head wound in the hospital and being visited by Joe.

One of my favorite moments: Frank deciding to blow off what is sure to be another exasperating conversation with the Chief in order to go on a skiing vacation with Joyce & Frank Jr.

Eight out of 10.
