"The Father Dowling Mysteries" strayed far from its source material (which is a plus, in my estimation). But it started getting silly as early as episode 1.6 ("The Face in the Mirror Mystery") with the introduction of the good Father's evil twin brother, Blane.
Well, it just got sillier. Sister "Steve" (a young nun introduced as Dowling's partner in crime-solving, obviously geared to attract admiring young women and randy boys, to avoid the "Murder, She Wrote" geriatric demographic) also has a look-alike. Only this time, she's no relation. This dead ringer for Steve is a royal princess.
Guess what? You're right! Meeting up accidentally, the princess and Sister Steve switch places. How unique is that? Well, if you ever read Mark Twain's classic THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER or seen the movie you may guess what ensues.
Sister Steve, playing the princess, tumbles headlong into a kidnapping-cum-murder plot while her doppelganger is running around loose.
Tracy Nelson ("Sister Steve") actually does a creditable job as the princess. And while she has a certain amount of sexual charm, she's just homely enough to look like one of Prince Charles' kinfolk. But David McCallum ("The Man from UNCLE") overplays slightly as the princess' . . . uncle.
