The consultant for the first documentary, Gérard de Sède, was later revealed to have been a friend of Pierre Plantard Pierre Plantard (who claimed to be a descendant of the last Merovingian king) who based his allegations on documents forged by Philippe de Chérisey aka Amédée (who subsequently wrote about how and why he did it).
In 2018,writer Henry Lincoln published the three documentaries on the internet, with additional introductions and closing words, distancing himself from his conclusions when he wrote and directed them, but he did not mention the documents shown in them were forgeries.

Time has faded this great story
When this first went out, it created quite a stir and of course following it we had 2 more episodes, the Holy Blood and the Holy Grail book and ultimately the Da Vinci Code. It revolves around the supposed hidden treasure found by a poor priest in the south of France late in the 19th century. Speculation was it was Templar or Cathar treasure, or even the Holy Grail. Sadly the whole Rennes le Château story has been proved to be an elaborate hoax, but still makes a fine story. Up to 200 books have been written on the subject! Having recently visited the area, it is well worth going to and just soaking up the whole atmosphere of the place, it really is a beautiful area. The devil figure in the entrance to the church is still quite something.
