Mr. Tulkinghorn puts pressure on Sgt. George for information on Captain Hawdon, also known as Nemo. He would like a sample of Hawdon's handwriting but George declines even under threat of having his debts called in. Mr. Guppy is still after information from Mr. Krook, who has Nemo's love letters. There's a connection between Lady Dedlock and Esther Summerson. Lady Dedlock's new maid Rosa is the object of a young man's affection but Sir Leicester objects at the conditions the boy's father, Mr. Rouncewell, imposes. Allan Woodcort's mother calls at Bleak House, but seems unimpressed with Esther. They also take in Jo who has fallen ill.
