Warning do not read unless seen episode.
This is another one of my favorite episodes for the show and to me one of the last best ones for their final season.
What I really like about the tale is they take a dark spin on the whole wish fulfillment motif, which makes sense since in folklore and some fantasy stories not all genies are good some are evil. By their nature their really tricksters, using the desires of others against them. Maneuvering and manipulating them so the genies get what they want.
The character Catherine you can sympathize with because we see she an insecure person, feels things don't go her way and she doesn't feel she is able or has the ability to attain what she desires; which is understandable because we all have that sometimes. I even like Joyce whom is Catherine's younger sister, she's not some stereotypical annoying kid but she's actually likable, good natured, youthful, and is good to her big sister. I really like the re-pore both of them have, you really feel both are in good terms with one another and support each other though thick and thin. I also feel in a way this is the real love story of this episode; yeah there is the boyfriend element but this is really one about love between both siblings; which makes us all the more concerned about their lives.
I really like how the whole wish fulfillment thing is handled where it's a gradual build up which just gives you a sense of dread and even doom, like a long math equation you know it's all going to add up to something and it's not good.
Marie is a solid villain, she's sort of like a Siren from Greek Myth as she's possess this beauty from a part of her face and eyes that we see, let alone that voice which is seductive and sexy. But deep down we see there is a sinister undercurrent which is reflecting on her face; she clearly has ulterior motives and as an old saying goes nothing is life is free. She's practically like a drug dealer, like any of them always acting like their your best friend despite not knowing you, just to sell you poison.
Throughout the ordeal we see that despite Catherine starting to get just about everything she wants, she begins to lose herself as her persona starts to change not for the better as she's became egocentric, off putting to others, and worst of all her relationship with her sister disintegrates. Instead of listening to her sister she is listening to her own Greed and Vanity and both of them are friends to no one.
We then of course see Cathrine suffer some nasty side effects as we then see she then her face and skin produces just some nasty skuzzy sores that look like something out of a Croninburg film. It just goes to show how Greed and Vanity don't give you treasures, they just give you more pain.
Be careful what you wish for, because you could lose something more valuable.
