Major Swanson is warning his troops about Geronimo and as he is doing so an Apache Scout, Tioka, comes in claiming everyone who was in Captain Reed's command was killed. Tioka offers to lead troops to find Geronimo. Rip is given permission to follow Tioka to find Geronimo; but Rip decides to bring Rinty along. At first, Tioka doesn't believe a dog can scout but as they travel Tioka comes to respect the great dog.
The men are beginning to grumble and collapse because they have no water. Rinty is able to find water, but some of the men don't trust Tioka. Rinty appears to trust Tioka even though the travel is rough.
Eventually, the men come to a series of ravines and mountains. The land is tough but they find Geronimo only to discover they are outnumbered. The troop tries to find cover on a mesa top to have the high ground. Rinty is sent to get help from Fort Apache. Rip and the troopers try to build a layer of protection by using burning brush and falling rocks to push the Indians back.
One of the troopers attacks Tioka when Rinty's message is found on a lance. Tioka is put under guard but escapes. Rinty is found but he is wounded. Tioka arrives at the fort, he can lead the men back but Swanson doesn't believe Tioka. Rnty identifies Tioka as a friend and that's enough for Major Swanson. Tioka leads the Major back in time to rescue Rip and the troopers.
At the end of the episode everyone celebrates Rusty's birthday by singing a special song, Yo Rinty.
