The BBC commissioned half of all UK TV scripted last year, defying the slowdown that hit its rivals and streamers and spending big on kids shows and thrillers, according to new research.
Ampere Analysis’ latest report found that the nation’s biggest public broadcaster greenlit 129 of 256 scripted shows in 2023, an increase of three on the prior year, although its comedy commissioning actually fell.
While the BBC’s scripted show increase was minimal, it defied the losses experienced by rivals and took a larger share of the pie. The number of streamer commissions dipped by 20% to 49, commercial free-to-air-rivals nearly halved to 54 and pay-tv outfits such as Sky fell from 52 to 27. Major BBC scripted commissions last year included an adaptation of Lord of the Flies, Mr Loverman starring Lennie James and a double season order for Waterloo Road.

The BBC has criticized research accusing the UK broadcaster of peddling viewers a “steady diet of woke bias,” including news about slavery and gender diversity storylines in drama.
The BBC accused the Campaign for Common Sense, a group that advocates for freedom of expression, of “cherry-picking” examples of so-called “woke” issues from thousands of hours of output.
The Campaign for Common Sense has yet to publish its research, but the group appears to have collated examples of content that has upset relatively small numbers of viewers. The BBC said it did not “constitute analysis.”
Findings were shared with The Daily Telegraph, which reported that the Campaign for Common Sense surveyed BBC content in an attempt to expose bias over issues including race and gender.
The group said BBC News published 55 separate stories about slavery, including people reflecting on their historical links to the slave trade.

Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.
“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.
It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.
Plot
Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.

The BBC has shown serious commitment to teen drama Waterloo Road by putting in a double-series order.
Returning earlier this year after eight years off air, the show’s second season has already been filmed, meaning that three new seasons are now on their way. Rope Ladder Fiction and Wall to Wall North produce Waterloo Road out of Manchester.
The show follows goings-on in a school in the north of England and was a huge hit between 2006 and 2015, before old episodes began amassing big numbers on iPlayer during lockdown. The BBC said Waterloo Road remains especially popular on iPlayer, where it is in the top three most-watched titles of the year so far for 16-34 year olds, alongside Happy Valley and EastEnders. Double-series orders are rare at the BBC and tend to be reserved for long runners such as Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise.

When it comes to British talent in Hollywood, Jack O’Connell is undeniably high on the list. After starting out as a teenager with small roles in popular British shows like The Bill, and Waterloo Road, O’Connell quickly showcased himself as a formidable centre force in season 3 of Skins. After growing up in Alvaston, Derby, O’Connell attended the Actors Workshop in Nottingham. It was here he was spotted and subsequently cast in Shane Meadows‘ BAFTA winning crime-drama, This Is England. Before long, O’Connell had proven himself as a massive talent in film and TV. UK TV presenters Ant and Dec are remaking Byker Grove, the show that made child stars of them three decades ago.
Late Late Show indie Fulwell 73 is developing the project with the I’m a Celebrity host’s Mitre Studios.
Originally broadcast between 1989 and 2006 on the BBC, Byker Grove became a household favorite as it told the story of a youth club in Newcastle. Celebrated for its handling of hard hitting and controversial storylines, the program ran for 18 series and launched many famous faces both in front of and behind the camera, including Ant and Dec as fun-loving duo Pj and Duncan. The pair have often credited the show with launching their careers.
The producers said the reboot, which isn’t attached to a broadcaster, is aimed at a primetime audience and will “engage with a new generation of teenagers navigating the different challenges faced by young adults today.”

Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. The one guarantee is that in the UK at least, there’s such an appetite for detectives and crime stories that TV will never run out of new cases to solve.
We’ve already had some top examples in 2023, from the Happy Valley and Endeavour finales to the excellent Belfast-based Blue Lights, but there are plenty more fresh crime dramas on the way, from police procedurals to true crime and murder mysteries. See what’s coming up below.

Regé-Jean Page stole our hearts as Simon Basset in Netflix's "Bridgerton." But he was making waves long before that. The 34-year-old actor burst onto our TV screens playing a hapless teacher in BBC One's "Waterloo Road." In fewer than 10 years, he's gone from the world of British television to Hollywood, earning a supporting role in Peter Jackson's adaptation of "Mortal Engines" as well quite a big role in the Emmy-nominated revival of "Roots," which was watched by a whopping 6.9 million American viewers.
Up next, Page is starring in the star-studded "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" movie alongside Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant. Of his role in the forthcoming action-comedy, Page told "Today" that "the hardest part about this movie was not cracking during the takes."

Long-running soap opera “EastEnders” and reality sensation “The Traitors” were the most streamed shows on BBC streamer iPlayer during the holiday period.
During the two-week period from Dec. 20 to Jan. 2, “EastEnders” pulled in 23.7 million streams, while the Studio Lambert-produced “The Traitors” drew 12.4 million to iPlayer. Next up was children’s program “Hey Duggee” with 10.2 million, fantasy drama “His Dark Materials” with 8.2 million and children’s show “Bluey” with 6.2 million.
The numbers for “The Traitors,” in particular, are impressive given the show — which is based on a Dutch format from broadcaster Rtl — wrapped its linear broadcast only on Dec. 22, meaning a substantial audience caught up with the series as a boxset on iPlayer. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, the “Mafia”-style reality show, in which a group of “faithful” contestants have to find the “traitors” in their midst who are quietly killing them off, was one of Britain’s most talked-about programs of the year.

Screenwriter and executive producer Muirinn Lane Kelly has died. She was 50.
The exec, who has credits for Waterloo Road and Mistresses in the UK, passed away this week. She was more recently an executive producer on Sky Atlantic and Epic drama Domina.

Exclusive: Allen Leech and India Mullen will lead the cast of an Irish drama series for AMC Networks’ Sundance Now and local broadcaster Virgin Media Television, we’ve learned.
The pair will topline six-part drama The Vanishing Triangle, which goes into production later this year with a U.S.-UK-Ireland production set-up, and Eccho Rights attached as international distributor. The show is inspired on true events that shook Ireland in the 1990s, when several women disappeared. While the characters and events in the series are fictional, the producers have spoken to several of the real life victims’ families, and hope the show will keep their stories in the Irish public’s mind. The show title is regularly used in the Irish media to refer to the events, which began with the disappearance of American woman Annie McCarrick in 1993 and spiraled to involve many similar cases.

All3Media CEO Jane Turton has said the debate around British public service broadcasting needs to be “reframed” as the biggest indie bosses in the country debate future Psb, privatization and the plethora of reboots.
These broadcasters are not “Netflix, Apple TV+ or YouTube,” Turton stressed during an Edinburgh TV Festival session on public service broadcasting, where she debated with Banijay UK Exec Chair Patrick Holland, Naked MD Fatima Salaria, Cardiff Productions Founder Pat Younge, Avalon Founder Jon Thoday and former Channel 4 CEO David Abraham.
“We have to concentrate on what PSBs do well and make more of that,” added Turton, whose company owns the likes of Gogglebox producer Studio Lambert. “I don’t think people celebrate their success enough.”
She called for a “reframing” of the debate around these broadcasters.

Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.
Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Before Perez says his final goodbye to the evidence board though, there’s a missing person case to solve, and a host of new characters to interrogate. Here’s who he’ll be meeting…

Talk about glamorous locations. It’s an overcast spring day in Boston, and Den of Geek is standing in… a parking lot outside an old flower warehouse. No, we haven’t made a wrong turn. This is the unassuming, on-location base camp for the cast and crew of Free Guy, a high-concept action-comedy set in (and out of) an explosive open-world video game. The forecourt is filled with rows of neatly parked, nondescript white trailers, which we’re ushered along until we reach one with a sign on the door that simply reads: “Molotov Girl”.

On a cloudless spring day in Los Angeles, Regé-Jean Page is posing on a rooftop. It’s sweltering outside, and that’s not accounting for Page’s signature smolder.
Most fans got to know the 31-year-old British-Zimbabwean star from a distance, as the actor perched on his couch for one Zoom interview after the next to pro- mote Netflix’s Regency romance drama “Bridgerton.” But Page is considerably more animated when he doesn’t have to fit into a virtual frame or into the buttoned-up persona of Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings. Of course, Simon eventually lets it all hang out as the romance with his leading lady, Daphne Bridgerton, (Phoebe Dynevor) progresses over the course of the series.
And on the set of his Variety cover shoot, Page does the same — emotionally, that is. (Full disclosure: Page does not go shirtless during the photo session; this is not that kind of magazine spread.

Philippa Goslett has been named the new showrunner of HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama “The Nevers,” following the exit of series creator Joss Whedon late last year.
Starring Laura Donnelly, “The Nevers” was picked up straight-to-series in 2018 and was set to be Whedon’s first TV project since “Dollhouse,” which ran on Fox from 2009-2010. “The Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator exited “The Nevers” on Nov. 25.
“This year of unprecedented challenges has impacted my life and perspective in ways I could never have imagined, and while developing and producing ‘The Nevers’ has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer,” Whedon said in a statement at the time. “I am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to...

Phoebe Dynevor has gone from little-known British TV actress, to a fixture in 63 million households around the world thanks to her breakthrough performance in Shondaland’s Netflix smash Bridgerton. Now she’s hoping to remain a fixture in Season 2, but admits filming under Covid-19 safety protocols will be challenging.
In an interview with Deadline, the 25-year-old actress acknowledged that her character Daphne Bridgerton’s story arc comes to a satisfying conclusion at the end of Season 1, as her lusty romance with Regé-Jean Page’s Simon Basset plays out over the course of the eight episodes.
Based on the novels of Julia Quinn, the spotlight shifts from Daphne to her older brother, Anthony Bridgerton, in the second book, but Dynevor thinks there is scope to flip Season 1’s storyline on its head. Anthony spends much of his time meddling in the affairs of his sister, without taking good enough care of his own romantic dalliances.
