Since The Asylum doesn’t have something to release at the moment, Full Moon Pictures has graciously stepped up and given us Bad CGI Gator. With a self-referential title designed to deflect criticism of its shortcomings, I really can’t say I was expecting much, and maybe because I had such low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised.
Somewhere in Georgia, a group of friends, Sam, Hope, Chad, Sarah, Pearce and Paisley are planning a Spring Break blowout.
Those plans include tossing their school laptops into the lake for a video they hope will go viral. Instead, it somehow transforms a tiny alligator into a huge, hungry beast. And it’s not just huge, it’s somehow been granted the powers of bad CGI such as the ability to move without touching the ground,...

At the end of October Cate Blanchett (“Tar”) had the lead in our Oscar odds for Best Actress, and at the end of November … she still had the lead for Best Actress. Can she hold on throughout the season? She’s formidable, but not unbeatable.
See‘Everything Everywhere’ and ‘Tar’: Oscars boost from Indie Spirits?
Blanchett is holding steady as of this writing with 22 Expert journalists betting on her to be nominated, 13 of whom say she’ll win. It would be her eighth nomination and third victory, which would place her in elite company. To date only seven individuals have won three or more acting Oscars. Katharine Hepburn is the all-time record-holder with four. And with three apiece are Ingrid Bergman, Walter Brennan, Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson, and Meryl Streep.
But that leaves nine Experts who aren’t betting on Blanchett. Most of those (six) are predicting...

When the SAG Awards announced in May that it would not longer air on TNT and TBS, a spokesperson insisted that finding a new home for the ceremony “is not unusual and has occurred several times over the history of the SAG Awards. This is no different.”
Actually, it is. With ratings down and costs up, awards shows have definitely lost their luster. And the SAG Awards are no exception: Deadline has learned the guild has yet to find a TV home for the 29th annual ceremony, set for February 26. Nominations will be announced January 11.
“They’ve been pitching it around but we passed,” said one broadcast TV executive. “The state of the business is atrocious. It’s a losing proposition.”
Launched in 1995 on NBC, the SAG Awards had been airing on TNT since 1998. In February, the two-hour show returned to an in-person show affair, where Coda and Squid Game...

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering John Poliquin’s underrated sequel, Grave Encounters 2.
Maybe it’s the fear of madness, or perhaps it’s the uncomfortable history of how mental illness used to be treated, but there’s definitely something about psychiatric hospitals that makes them such a compelling location for scary stories. From Dracula to Shutter Island, there’s no shortage of horror yarns featuring spooky asylums, and one of the most entertaining of the bunch has to be the Vicious Brothers’ 2011 Found Footage flick, Grave Encounters.
Breaking online records when its trailer went viral and earning back nearly forty-five times its production budget despite a limited theatrical release, calling Grave Encounters a success is something of an understatement. That’s why it’s no surprise that the film soon spawned a sequel. However, by the time the project had been greenlit, the Vicious...

“The Lost Daughter,” a psychological drama that marked the directing debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, was named the best feature at the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday. It was one of a leading three prizes that the movie about a middle-aged professor forced to grapple with her life choices earned at the ocean-side ceremony.
“Red Rocket’s” Simon Rex and “Zola’s” Taylour Page earned best lead actor and actress prizes for portraying a faded porn star and a part-time stripper, respectively, a sign of the edgy projects that the Spirits were designed to highlight. The awards aired on IFC and were handed out in a tent next to the Santa Monica Pier during a boozy ceremony that stretched on for two hours and change.
The Spirits mostly spread the wealth. “Passing” and “Zola” won two prizes apiece, but no other films made repeat visits to the podium to accept statues.

Released in 2002, Gore Verbinski's "The Ring" endures as a staple of teenage sleepover endurance testing. The very video that leaves a trail of deformed bodies in its wake is baked into the film itself, transforming the audience from impartial viewer to imminent victim of the cursed tape's supernatural powers. An adaptation of the 1998 Japanese film "Ringu" directed by Hideo Nakata (which itself is based on the 1991 Koji Suzuku novel of the same name), the critical and commercial success of "The Ring" paved the way for a slew of American J-horror remakes in the aughts, including "The Grudge," "Dark Water," "Shutter" and "The...

In 2004, Banjong Pisanthanakun and then-collaborator Parkpoom Wongpoom kickstarted their directorial careers with “Shutter,” a supernatural thriller so effective it’s been remade (albeit to lesser effect) abroad three times to date. Less likely to translate that widely is Pisanthanakun’s latest solo effort, “The Medium.” Marking his return to straight horror after a couple romances and one more comedically slanted genre film (“Pee Mak”), this demonic possession saga is too thoroughly Thai in milieu and details to risk being just another derivative of “The Exorcist.”
Still, cultural specificity only brings so much freshness to an overlong tale that ultimately trades in too many familiar tropes, from the victim’s evil-grinning, black-gunk-spewing
hijinks to the deployment of a found-footage construct a la “Blair Witch.” There are perhaps too many ideas here, few of them novel, and none scary enough to keep these two-hours-plus taut. A watchable mixed bag that’s already been successful on home turf,...

The awards season keeps shifting: the Film Independent Spirit Awards will move away from its usual pre-Oscars ceremony date to one three weeks earlier. The 37th annual Indie Spirits will now take place on Sunday, March 6, with the Oscars following on Sunday, March 27.
Deadline notes “this is a huge break with tradition and comes as the Spirit Awards look to get more traction with the viewing public, as well as exert more possible influence on potential Oscar winners as this new date falls the day before the Oscar nominees luncheon and also before final balloting begins for the Academy on March 17.”
Still, it’s not the first break in tradition for the awards which, last year, opted to air a full three days before the Oscars, thanks to a televised virtual event hosted by Melissa Villaseñor. Traditionally, the awards play out on the Saturday afternoon before the Oscars on a beach in Santa Monica.

The independent film community is not assembling under a billowy white tent for the 36th Independent Spirit Awards on the Saturday before the Oscars. Mounting a live awards show on the Santa Monica beach just wasn’t going to happen. Yes, the Oscars will give it a try April 25 via two Los Angeles hubs and another dozen or so satellite feeds around the world, but the Academy has millions to spend on safety protocols. Nonprofit arts organization Film Independent will hold the annual awards ceremony as a IFC primetime live broadcast April 22 at 7pm Pt, 10pm Et.
More people voted for the Spirits this year than ever before: Film Independent has grown to over 7,000 members, adding more international voters. Spirits have a $22.5 million budget cap; international film qualification is based on the writer, director, and producer’s country of origin. A foreign-language with an American story is not an international film; nor is “The Father.

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring all of the indie films which deserve the honor and recognition that they usually don't receive - celebrating their 35th year. The 2020 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Saturday before the Oscars at a ceremony in Santa Monica. The two main winners: Lulu Wang's The Farewell, taking home the top prize, and Uncut Gems, which won Best Director(s) & Editing, along with Adam Sandler nabbing the prize for Best Male Lead. The rest of the nominees from 2019 included many stellar films that got snubbed by other award shows, a much better selection than the Academy Awards. These are always a nice counter-balance to the Oscars, especially with Uncut and Farewell leading the way. Read on for the list of Indie Spirits results. You'll notice an [IMDb] link next to each film. This...

With the Oscars and the Golden Globes overlooking female directors this year, it was the Independent Spirit Awards who outdid them by handing its Best Feature award to Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Best First Feature to Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and Best Documentary to Julia Reichert’s American Factory.
“We’re so much cooler than other awards shows: It’s daytime, we’re on the beach, and we recognize female directors,” joked Independent Spirit Awards host Aubrey Plaza in her opening monologue as she returned for another back-to-back year of duty.

This year, the Independent Spirit Awards are really indie. A24 dominates the field with 18 Spirit Award nominations over five films. Of that group, only “The Lighthouse” scored an Oscar nod, for Best Cinematography.
That means several high-profile contenders who did not land Oscar nominations will get strong Spirit sympathy votes. “The Lighthouse” and “Uncut Gems” have five nominations each, so Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, and Adam Sandler are strong acting contenders. In the Supporting Female race, there’s no way Jennifer Lopez doesn’t win the Spirit for Oscar-snubbed “Hustlers,” fresh from her Super Bowl triumph.
“Uncut Gems” goes up against Netflix’s Best Picture Oscar nominee “Marriage Story” for Best Feature, which is already taking home the Robert Altman Ensemble Award for Noah Baumbach’s high-wattage cast. That’s why the movie has only three nomination, and could lose Best Feature to the Safdie brothers’ popular thriller.

Where can you meet likeminded UFO and paranormal enthusiasts from around the world? Check out these conventions.
At most comic cons and fan events, one expects to run into people dressed as supernatural entities, extraterrestrials, and mysterious creatures. But at paranormal, cryptozoology, and ufology events, fans are discussing the existence of them – and often gather to actively go looking for them.
And as much as I move about in the world of comic cons, for the past decade or so, I have spent weekends traveling the world to talk as a journalist and researcher about ghosts, demons, curses, aliens, UFO, and monsters. During the day, the world of paracons closely resembles most fan events, and there is quite a bit of cross-pollination between them. There are panels, vendor rooms, and signings by notable authors, television personalities, and occasionally actors from paranormal pop culture.
But at night, the activities continue with a skywatch,...

Part of the official selection for Toronto International Film Festival, Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival, Rooth Tang’s first feature length film ‘Sway’ is an intelligent look at how globalisation has made the world so small, yet it can still feel so vast.
“Sway” will be available to iTunes, Google Play, Amazon on 9/1/2018, courtesy of Cheng Cheng Films
The film begins in an airport, which is really the precursor to the inter continental journey we will embark on throughout the 108 minute runtime. We follow three different couples living very different lives on three different continents. Parisian immigrant Arthur’s visa is due to expire so he is trying to convince his career-focused partner Vivian to come back to Asia with him. American Amanda is dealing with the difficulties of marrying into a Japanese family to a widower, who is still carrying his demons with him.

Death Becomes Her: Gelb’s B-Grade Horror Haunted By Its Own Ideas
With its absurd title, which recalls an era of enjoyable B-grade Sci-Fi/horror films from decades past, The Lazarus Effect seems disappointingly inclined to revel in a shallow pool of absurd, preternatural devices. Though its third act regression into silliness may seem wholly unsurprising to a majority of its core audience, the pedigree of talent both in front of and behind the camera would seem to dictate otherwise. At its outset, there’s a decent degree of mounting dread, even as we expect the consequences of these medical students’ silly actions to quickly reign a terrible wrath upon their ambitious, presumptuous brains. The title, referencing a notable character from the Bible who literally comes back from the dead, is an obvious giveaway to those familiar with the allusion, but it very meekly pits its warring scientific and...

Shortly after the new year, we caught our first glimpse at the new supernatural thriller The Lazarus Effect. In what is essentially a remake of Flatliners, the story follows Olivia Wilde as Zoe, a medical student working on an experiment to regenerate dead tissue. But when she ends up in a fatal accident in the hospital, her boyfriend (Mark Duplass) decides to use their work in an attempt to bring her back from the dead. But something is wrong, and Zoe isn't who she used to be. It's your run of the mill possession thriller, with Wilde taking down her colleagues one by one. Can Duplass bring her back from the darkness? Watch! Here's the new trailer for David Gelb's The Lazarus Effect from Yahoo: You can still watch the first trailer for The Lazaurus Effect right here. Reanimating the dead may seem unnatural and downright scary to someone who’s watched the human race become dinner for the living dead in countless zombie movies. For a group of medical students in The Lazarus Effect, though, reversing death could lead to a new understanding of life. But as evidenced in the film’s first trailer, scientific discoveries can come with painful sacrifices.
A Blumhouse Productions film from Relativity Studios, The Lazarus Effect was directed by David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi) off a screenplay by Luke Dawson (2008’s Shutter) and Jeremy Slater (The Fantastic Four reboot). The film follows “a group of medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life”, and it stars Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, Evan Peters and Sarah Bolger.

Recently we've seen Olivia Wilde in the likes of Her, Rush and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. But if you were thinking that what's been long missing from her CV is a horror thriller, look no further than this new trailer for The Lazarus Effect. Wilde dies and comes back to life again. For science!Wilde stars with Mark Duplass, Donald Glover and Evan Peters as one of a group of scientists investigating the reanimation of dead tissue. Sadly an electrical accident finishes her off mid-experiment, leading her colleagues to continue their work on Wilde herself. But when she comes back she's not quite the same as when she left.Bits of Flatliners and The Eye in that set-up, but hopefully the full movie will effectively tread its own path. If you heard that Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover (formerly of Community), and Mark Duplass were starring in a film together, you might expect something along the lines of a dramedy. But on the contrary, an upcoming movie starring all three actors looks to be brimming with wide-eyed horror, as evidenced in the first image from The Lazarus Effect, which sounds a bit like a mash-up of Re-Animator and Flatliners.
EW debuted the first look at The Lazarus Effect, which features Olivia Wilde holding a surgical tool to her head while her super-dilated eyes glare above a slight—perhaps even sinister—smile.

While the task of turning Arthur C. Clarke’s beloved 1953 science fiction novel, Childhood’s End, into a six hour miniseries seems ambitious, the Syfy project is now gathering momentum as it prepares to go before the cameras. Adapted by Matthew Graham (Life On Mars), with the helm to be taken by Nick Hurran (Doctor Who), the television event has now added Daisy Betts (Shutter) and Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck) to a cast that already features Charles Dance (Game Of Thrones), Mike Vogel (Under The Dome), Ashley Zukerman (Terra Nova), Osy Ikhile (The Anomaly) and Yael Stone (Orange Is The New Black).
The unsettling tale chronicles events after a seemingly peaceful alien invasion of earth occurs, resulting in the population eventually residing in harmony under the mysterious, apparently benevolent Overlords. The alien liaison for earth, Karellen, communicates only with Ricky Stormgren – immediately making him the most influential human on the planet.

It may all be a little foggy now, but back in 2002 the success of Gore Verbinski’s remake of Hideo Nakata’s “The Ring” kicked off what would quickly become a Japanese horror film remake frenzy. While limp entries into the subgenre like “Shutter” or “The Eye” would eventually help cannibalize the market for these films later in the decade, the success of the first “The Ring” would bring Nakata’s own talents stateside for a sequel, along with seeing Jennifer Connonly star in a remake of his “Dark Water,” directed by Walter Salles of all people.
Well it looks as if Nakata is looking to continue on the path of horror-tinged fare with his upcoming project “The Suicide Forest,” an adaptation of Idw’s graphic novel for “The Ring” and “The Grudge” producers Roy Lee and Taka Ichise. The pair are now looking for a screenwriter to tell the...

Every day is pretty much like any other, that is of course, unless your name is Ayame (Riko Narumi) and you live in a world created by Keralino Sandorovich. With a pin-up career going nowhere fast, Ayame takes on the PR role of ‘police chief for the day’, a job that would normally require her to put on her best smile and act like she works for the police department. Unfortunately for Ayame, today is not a normal day. The staff at the police station insist on treating her like a real police chief and look to her for advice, enthusiasm and instruction. Which is bad enough in itself, but add to the mix an ex-boyfriend who works as a detective at the station, and you’re starting to have a very bad day indeed. Things are a little more complicated than that though,...

The team that brought us the upcoming found footage horror anthology V/H/S, Radio Silence, is about to embark on a new found footage movie journey that will tackle the classic tale of Frankenstein. The directing quartet is currently in negotiations with Lionsgate to direct a horror film called The Reawakening, which comes from Shutter screenwriter Luke Dawson. Vulture describes it as "equal parts Flatliners and Frankenstein."
There are no other details on the film other than that. I loved the movie V/H/S! I had a chance to see it at Sundance, and I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was. It ended up being one of those movies that I would will enjoy watching every Halloween right along side Halloween, Poltergeist Susperia, and Trick r' Treat.
