Odd List Shiromi Arserio 3 Oct 2013 - 07:00
Shiromi talks us through ten of the least expected sci-fi crossovers in the geek TV world...
Who would win in a fight? The crew of Babylon 5 or the crew of Deep Space Nine? While often reserved for the realm of fan fiction, two established franchises crossing over does happen from time to time. Typically you'll see this when the properties are owned by the same company, like Superman meeting Batman. While other times it's an intentional crossover of two very different properties like Star Trek characters crossing over into the X-Men universe. Yes, you read that right.
This list is devoted to the top franchise crossovers. I've tried to steer clear from shows that obviously exist in the same universe, like Tng characters showing up on DS9, or Buffy appearing on Angel, and instead focus on crossovers from separate franchises. Some of...

With its Nazis in space, Iron Sky promised a comedy that would take flight – but did its fans' involvement drag it down?
Iron Sky was one of the most buzzed about films ahead of this year's Berlin film festival, but many critics (including my colleague Andrew Pulver) found the reality of Finnish director Timo Vuorensola's Nazis-in-space comedy rather less satisfying than its enticing premise promised. Just as with another highly hyped fanboy-fuelled movie that wound up disappointing, Samuel L Jackson romp Snakes on a Plane, there were suggestions that the assistance of thousands of amateur collaborators via the online Wreckamovie community hindered rather than helped the film.
Iron Sky posits the preposterous but intriguing possibility that the Nazis discovered anti-gravity technology in the final months of the second world war and hightailed it off to Earth's satellite, where they've been preparing for an invasion ever since. In the year...

Nazis in space... what's not to like? We've been hearing about Iron Sky for years, and in that time the filmmakers managed to produce it through financial support from fans online, who were also given some say in the creative direction of the film. Now this labour of love is finally about to hit theatres, starting with a premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next month. To go along with this triumphant announcement, they're released a final trailer for the film. Coming from the director of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, Iron Sky imagines a world where the Nazis built spaceships and traveled to the dark side of the moon where they built a secret base and awaited the perfect time to return to Earth and take over. That time is in the year 2018. The movie stars Udo Kier and Christopher Kirby, and although I wish it was played a little more straight,...

If you are a Trekker who hasn't been won over by J.J. Abrams entertaining but hole-riddden Star Trek reboot, there is a tonic you can try. What's more, you don't need a prescription and all it will cost is a few megabytes of your monthly bandwidth allowance. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is a splendid Finnish parody of Star Trek that can be legally downloaded off the Web for free or purchased on commercially released DVD in Scandinavia, Britain or Japan.
The making of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is a classic example of the impressive quality that can be achieved despite a small budget and minimal equipmen when a group of skilled, dedicated and imaginative filmmakers get together. The movie was made over a period of seven years by a group of five students and unemployed people from Tampere, Finland. And it was originally done without the aid of a major studio.

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, a Finnish-made Star Trek spoof that is regarded as Finland's most successful film, has been commerically released on DVD in the UK just in time to cash in the release of J.J. Abrams much hyped Star Trek reboot.
The Finnish parody is the latest in a series of Star Wreck movie series. The seven movies in the series were made by a group of friends on a low budget and with minimal equipment. The series started with Star Wreck, a relatively short and simple animated film. Each subsequent film showed improvements in production values and later films included live actors. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is a feature-length live-action film with special effects that are as good as those in many Hollywood productions.

Falling very squarely into the “so bad it’s fantastic” category, we just had to give this a mention. Revolver Entertainment has just picked up the UK and U.S. rights to the superbly silly Finnish Star Trek parody: Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning. A micro-budget sci-fi comedy made for the internet fan community, Star Wreck has become the most-watched Finnish film ever with more than 8 million viewers worldwide. The launch is planned to take place simultaneously with the new Star Trek movie in May. And not content with just lampooning “Treckers,” the next film from the Wreck team will be, Iron Sky, a $5 million feature satirical science fiction comedy about Nazis on the moon in 2018. Genius! Check out the lunacy on each films sites.
