The episode of The Best of the Bad Guys focusing on Damien Thorn was written, narrated, and edited by Mike Holtz.
The Prince of Darkness. Heir to both Hell and Thorn Industries. The antichrist himself and guy who gets his haircut at Great Clips, Damien Thorn. The titular character of The Omen franchise will be praised not by his usual followers but by us as we dive into the second edition of The Best Of The Bad Guys, where we rank the best work of cinema’s most evil villains.
Damien Thorn’s run of evil has spanned five films including an utterly pointless shot-for-shot remake and a TV series with another prequel on the way in The First Omen. And though The Omen IV: The Awakening doesn’t follow Damien himself; his presence is felt. The franchise started in 1976 with legendary director Richard Donner giving us the first version...

Made in collaboration with the Church of Satan, as stated in its opening titles, Scott Cumming’s Realm of Satan doesn’t seek to expose hidden secrets of the religion, investigate the church’s place amongst belief systems, or, for the most part, even hear from those who may oppose its teachings. Rather, solely through a series of inspired cinematic tableaus, we are invited to take a look from the inside to witness the practices and everyday lives of those who follow this atheistic path. Due to the welcome decision of not delving deeper into the minds of the subjects––as well as displaying little input on the part of the filmmaker apart from the frames he chooses to capture––Realm of Satan becomes a compelling Rorschach test for how one may perceive the religious.

Scott Cummings’s Realm of Satan isn’t designed to challenge what you think you know about the Church of Satan. Unfolding like a cheeky promotional video, the documentary reveals little about the organization and says even less, offering all the insight of something that might play on loop in the gift shop of an occult museum.
Cummings structures his feature directorial debut as a series of disconnected scenes depicting Satanists going about their lives, from dancing to singing to doing card tricks. The camera is often static, viewing its subjects at a slight distance in centered, unbroken shots whose fussy compositions attest to the Church of Satan’s obsession with showmanship above all else. At every moment, we’re aware that these individuals know that they’re being recorded, as when one member puts on Kiss-esque makeup while staring into the camera as if it were a mirror.

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

Arizona Republicans are hosting a two-day, QAnon-inflected, anti-vaccine circus at the statehouse — focused on supposed “atrocities” committed by public health officials in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The hearings, which began this morning, are organized by a new state Senate body, the Novel Coronavirus South Western Intergovernmental Committee. The committee’s chosen acronym — Ncswic, which has been plastered on posters promoting the hearings — offers unusual cross-branding. It shares the abbreviation of an infamous QAnon catchphrase, “Nothing Can Stop What Is Coming.”

Austin, TX – Finding a way to my first film at the 2023 SXSW Film/TV Fest is a specific challenge, but after being shuttled to the famed Alamo Drafthouse, I found myself at the World Premiere of “Satan Wants You,” an amazing documentary about the “Satanic Panic” of the 1980s and ‘90s, directed by Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams.
“Satan Wants You” tells the untold story of how the Satanic Panic of the 1980s was ignited by “Michelle Remembers,” a lurid memoir by psychiatrist Larry Pazder and his patient Michelle Smith. Supported by the Catholic Church, the bestselling book relied on recovered-memory therapy to uncover Michelle’s childhood abduction by baby-stealing Satanists. Amplified by law enforcement and America’s Daytime TV boom, satanic rumors spread through panic-stricken communities across the world, leaving a wave of destruction and wrongful convictions in their wake. This film digs deep into the roots of moral panics and cult conspiracies,...

One of the experts interviewed in Satan Wants You, a disturbingly compelling documentary making its world premiere at SXSW, points out that, today, the 1980s cultural phenomenon known as the “Satanic Panic” is seen as a joke. Bands of Satanists kidnapping children and eating babies? Ok, such talk is not ha-ha funny. But with the passage of time we can certainly call such accusations absurd. In the moment there was nothing funny about it, and results for many falsely accused individuals were devastating.
In Satan Wants You, directors Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams lay the blame on two fascinating individuals: Michelle Smith and Dr. Lawrence Pazder. In 1980, the native of Victoria, British Columbia, and her psychiatrist (Pazder) released the book Michelle Remembers, whose cover teased readers with the following description: “The true story of a year-long contest between innocence and evil.” Smith’s account of childhood Satanic ritual abuse...

David Gordon Green's "Halloween" -- not to be confused with "Halloween," "Halloween," or Halloween -- separated itself from all of the previous "Halloween" sequels, rebooting the franchise with only the 1978 film retained as canon. This ignore-the-sequels gambit had, incidentally, also been played by "Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later" in 1998, which ignored the events of "Halloween III: Season of the Witch," "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers," "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers," and "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers." David Gordon Green's 2018 version of "Halloween" was, essentially, a new crack at "Halloween II." The 2021 film "Halloween Kills" was a sequel to the 2018 film, making "Halloween" the very first "Halloween II" to get its very own "Halloween II." Coming on October 14, 2022, is "Halloween Ends," the thirteenth film in the franchise.
The conceit of Green's "Halloween" was that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney...

After debuting with supporting roles in such films as the gonzo-horror pic “Sheitan” and offering the sole female presence in macho juggernaut “A Prophet,” actress Bekhti became movie star Bekhti with the release of her 2010 comedy “All That Glitters.” Though that breakthrough role landed her a César and increased her box-office clout, the Parisian has not allowed herself to get too comfortable in any one gear.
“All my roles have to scare me,” she says. “Fear is reassuring; if one day I arrived on set and didn’t feel a bit afraid, that would be the end. Being afraid doesn’t stop me, it pushes me forward.”
So she has continually sought out first-time filmmakers, and is trying her hand at producing, developing a feature with theater director Julie Duclos.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Cloverfield (Matt Reeves)
Science-fiction films don’t get much more immersive than Cloverfield, Matt Reeves‘ thrilling feature debut, putting us directly into the shoes of an alien invasion. One of the rare cases in which intriguing, tight-lipped marketing actually delivered on its promise, this sci-fi found-footage thriller has memorable setpieces at every turn, complete with a sense of genuine panic, a feeling that other post-9/11 films often render as exploitative.

After winning an award for Best Cinematography in the World Cinema competition at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Ariel Kleiman’s directorial debut Partisan was snapped up by Well Go USA Entertainment and released theatrically in October. The limited theatrical didn’t seem to attract much attention, though Kleiman’s film is exactly the kind of offbeat mixture of violence and social commentary which will secure greater appreciation through a slow burn trickle as time goes on. Featuring a stellar, imperious performance from French actor Vincent Cassel, you can add this to his list of under-the-radar starring turns (Sheitan; Our Day Will Come) worthy of greater renown.
Sure to draw superficial comparisons to other famed pre-teen assassin films like The Professional (1994) or Hanna (2011), Australian helmer Kleiman’s directorial debut instead feels like what you’d imagine Yorgos Lanthimos’ version of The Village (2004) would feel like. Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

French director Kim Chapiron created quite a stir with his debut effort Sheitan thanks in no small part to an absolutely insane central performance by Vincent Cassel. Chapiron followed that effort with 'kids gone wrong' picture Dog Pound and it would appear he will continue his exploration of wayward youth - although in a radically different setting - with his upcoming Smart Ass (aka La Creme De La Creme). Soon the rules of a market economy will no longer be a mystery to you. Learn, work and apply." Kelly, Dan and Louis take him at his word. Starting from the...

The latest feature film from writer/director Xan Cassavetes (daughter of cinema legend John Cassavetes), whose documentary Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession won acclaim among cult TV fans, Kiss of the Damned is the erotically-charged tale of the relationship between screenwriter Paolo (Milo Ventimiglia of Heroes and Pathology) and rogue vampire Djuna (Joséphine de La Baume), which leads to Paolo's transformation into one of the undead and puts them both in jeopardy from Djuna's sinister sister Mimi (Roxane Mesquida, Sheitan), who can't control her own predatory impulses. If the new red-band trailer from Magnet is any indication, it looks like the film stirs up gothic and modern vampire conventions in a stylish, highly sensual (and kinda kinky) melting pot, with lots of steamy sex and impressive bloodletting... and this gorgeous advance poster, which recalls the sexy bloodsuckers of Jean Rollin, has me completely hooked. I'm not sure how interesting this will be for most of you, but Marvel has updated the Iron Man 3 official site with the logo animation you see to the right. Robert Pattinson has joined the cast of Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert opposite Naomi Watts with a late Fall 2012 start being eyed. The film is based on the true story of Gertrude Bell (Watts), the traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attache for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. Pattinson's character is that of T.E. Lawrence, whom most know as Lawrence of Arabia. [Variety] Keanu Reeves continues to discuss the prospects of a Bill and Ted's 3 this time telling GQ, "One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven't done it.

The French moviemaker Dominik Moll has followed his admirable Hitchcockian thriller Harry, He's Here to Help and the impressive Pinteresque psychological drama Lemming, with a respectful version of Matthew G Lewis's notorious 1796 gothic drama about a 16th-century Spanish monk led astray by an evil emissary and doing a deal with Satan himself. Vincent Cassel, looking like a priest out of a Zurbarán painting, is a formidable presence, and the picture is atmospherically lit by Patrick Blossier, but it's a rather dull offering – tasteful horror for the carriage trade.

Vincent Cassel brings his unsmiling intensity to Matthew Lewis's classic errant 18th-century monk
Dominik Moll is the German-born film-maker who created the elegant noir suspense movies Lemming (2005) and Harry, He's Here to Help (2000) – now he has adapted The Monk, by Matthew Lewis, the classic English gothic novel of the 18th century. It stars Vincent Cassel as Friar Ambrosio, a charismatic monk tempted by Satan and the lures of the flesh. With an exclamatory orchestral score by Alberto Iglesias, this feverishly intense movie has a tablespoon of 1970s art-porn; the work of Walerian Borowczyk comes to mind, and Moll could well be a fan of The Omen. Cassel brings to the leading role his accustomed unsmiling intensity, as he comes to terms with the arrival of a strange new monk who wears an eerie face mask after being horribly disfigured in a fire. It is not a story of great depth or passion,...

Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, Brotherhood Of The Wolf) is to make a new version of Beauty And The Beast, Screen Daily reports from Berlin. The film will star the great Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Out Day Will Come, Sheitan) and Lea Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds), and will be produced by Richard Grandpierre. Details of plot and what approach the new film will take are skimpy but Gans said: "Although I will keep to a form of storytelling of this timeless fairy tale that is in keeping with the same pace and characters as the original, I will surprise the audience by creating a completely new visual universe." Principal photography will start on October 8. Eskwad is partnering with Pathe on the project...

Michel Piccoli, We Have a Pope
Nanni Moretti's Habemus Papam / We Have a Pope was the top movie of 2011 according to the Cahiers du Cinéma editors and film critics. The Cahiers du Cinéma list is available in the December print edition of the French magazine.
A Vatican-set satire about a newly elected, psychologically fragile pope (European Film Award Lifetime Achievement winner Michel Piccoli) and his therapist (Moretti himself), earlier this year We Have a Pope won six awards from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists, including Best Director and Best Producer (there's no Best Film category).
Margherita Buy co-stars as another psychotherapist.

As I was perusing through my usual stack of Halloween movies I found myself endlessly bored with the selection. Every film I picked up echoed through my hallow mind, the classic quotes and memorable scenes so fresh in my memory that I felt I had only just seen them. I needed a cure, and fast, my itch for a horror film outside the box tore at my insides like a zombie at flesh.
Even my horror movie metaphors were becoming played out and contrived. “The Internet!” I proclaimed. There’s tons of stuff on there. Armed with only my address bar (and a bottle of whisky) I set out on a quest to find hidden gems of horror that lie outside the border of my own comfort zone to either add to my Lovefilm account, order from Amazon or are available to download legally from the internet.
So this week,...

Violence, action, fast cars, hordes of redheads, air horns, nudity, and that’s just the trailer. Vincent Cassel is one of my favorite working actors, and after watching this fresh trailer for French director Roman Gavras‘s Our Day Will Come, I don’t think that’s going to change any time soon. This movie looks intense.
American audiences will recognize Cassel from Black Swan. Gavras is best known stateside for directing the epic 9-minute music video for M.I.A.‘s “Born Free“, which got a lot of attention last year for its graphic depictions of violence and sex in a police state.
Our Day Will Come stars Cassel and Olivier Barthelemy, who previously worked together on the excellent Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 and the 2006 horror film, Sheitan. A synopsis and the trailer below [via First Showing]:

Our Day Will Come is released on Blu-ray from Monday 22nd August and we have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away to our readers. Read on to find out how;
The directorial debut of Romain Gavras, best known for his controversial Music videos for M.I.A (Born Free) and Justice (Stress), Our Day Will Come is a bold and savagely humorous outsider epic, telling the story of Patrick (Vincent Cassel) and Remy (Olivier Barthelemy) a pair of outcasts joined together by their dislike of society and their own red hair.
Patrick is a charismatic but cynical therapist, long bored with listening to the banalities of his clients’ problems, he is desperate for any situation he can manipulate for his own amusement. A defining opportunity comes in the form of Remy, an awkward, alienated teenager, bullied by his family and ostracized by his peers who use his red hair as prime ammunition for their taunts.

Drive Angry 3D (3D Blu-ray/Blu-Ray)Summit Home Entertainment2011/Rated R/109 minsList Price: $34.99 – Now AvailableWait, wasn't Nicolas Cage just in a movie? Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot who I was writing about. I've said it many times before, I can forgive Cage for making so many bad movies, because more often than not, he makes solid, entertaining films. Forget the National Treasures and the Ghost Riders, small gems like Matchstick Men and Bad Lieutenant are the types of unconventional flicks most name actors wouldn't have the confidence to sign up for. You've gotta give Cage credit as well. Hit or miss, the guy's a bold risk taker, the kind of actor whose willing to bet his career just to be experimental and have a little fun in the process. At this point, I think it's safe to say Cage has reached a peak where his career is safe no matter what he does.

French director Kim Chapiron’s second feature takes him to Canada for a remake of Scum, the famed 1970’s gritty BBC film about life in a borstal, now entitled Dog Pound.
Four law-breaking teenagers (who we are introduced to via a nifty pre-credits sequence) find themselves incarcerated in a detention centre where revenge and retribution are a daily occurrence where the guards offer little in the way of sympathy or empathy. One of the youngsters, 17 year-old Butch (Adam Butcher), remanded for a violent attack on an officer at his previous institute, struggles to curb his aggression towards the authorities and some of his fellow intimidating inmates.
A film like this really lives or dies on the believability of the cast and Chapiron has assembled an authentic-looking bunch of young actors. They all acquit themselves extremely well and the lead Butcher (in the Ray Winstone role from the original) is particularly impressive,...

Machine Gun Preacher
Opens: 2011
Cast: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker
Director: Marc Forster
Summary: After finding God, drug-dealing biker Sam Childers renounces his outlaw ways and embarks on a spiritual path, becoming a crusader for hundreds of desperate and helpless children who were being forced to become soldiers in war-torn southern Sudan.
Analysis: Despite taking the freshly rejuvenated James Bond franchise and nearly destroying it with the very disappointing "Quantum of Solace", German-Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster still has a decent amount of good will left thanks to strong earlier efforts like "Monster's Ball," "Finding Neverland," "Stranger Than Fiction" and "The Kite Runner".
Now, in his first film since that Bond outing, Forster returns to serious drama with this true story tale of a biker who became a humanitarian crusader for children in the Sudan. The story itself is fascinating, the born again Sam Childers and...

Can't make it to Utah this year for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival? Well, thanks to Sundance Selects, the theatrical and video-on-demand film label, five films being screened at the fest will simultaneously be available nationwide, on demand, on most major cable systems. Two seems to qualify as genre films, but the others sound worthy of a bit of attention as well.
From the Press Release:
Sundance Selects has announced its second partnership with the not-for-profit Sundance Institute for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival (January 20th-30th; Park City, Ut). Five films are part of the "Direct from the Sundance Film Festival" initiative, including four world premieres recently acquired by Sundance Selects (Brendan Fletcher's Mad Bastards, Michael Tully's Septien, Paul Mariano and Kurt Norton's These Amazing Shadows, and Joe Swanberg's Uncle Kent) and one U.S. premiere (Gregg Araki's Kaboom). To mark the release of Dog Pound on DVD and Blu-ray, 3rd January, we are giving away copies of the brutal prison drama.
Dog Pound is Scum for the 21st Century, a tough and brutal film set in a young offenders institute for teenage boys that the system doesn’t know what to do with. The long-term inmates have built a rigid power structure based on fear and the guards use the prisoners to let out their own frustrations.
Butch, Davis and Angel are new arrivals. They have never met before but they all soon realize that the odds are stacked against them and that their only hope for getting through their sentences is if they watch each others’ backs. But friendship will only get them so far when their endurance is stretched to the limit…

French film-maker Kim Chapiron makes an impressive volte-face with the American set Dog Pound. Ostensibly a loose remake of Alan Clark’s controversial Scum (1979), Chapiron’s stylish direction and assured narrative control allows the material to never feel like a cheap imitation.
The director relocates the drama to Nowheresville, USA (actually Montana) and focuses on the experiences of three young boys, each with their own issues and problems, and how they navigate through a tense, new world.
Prison flicks by their very nature are restricted to certain themes and issues. Not until recently with Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet did we get a new take on the genre. Here we follow the lives of three young lads as they are introduced into juvenile detention and the misery that follows. Butch, Angel and Davis are misfits taught a very harsh lesson on the inside as they struggle in various capacities.

Franck Richard’s short, sharp little horror film The Pack could become well known for creating a new mythology, even if it does concoct a new bogeyman in the form of a zombie, mole and coal miner. It could be called Coal Miner’s Slaughter. Of course it’s pretty funny stuff – and quite intentional.
Starring French horror legend Phillipe Nahon and Emilie Dequenne as characters stumbling upon some murderous yolks in northern France, the stand out performance belongs to Yolande Moreau as the former wrestler and all around bloody mama, La Spack. She’s one tough broad and you wouldn’t mess with her!
At eighty minutes The Pack breezes by, high on blood and laughs. Typically of a French production, it looks fantastic with the wintry landscape captured in earthy tones befitting the material.

Happy Monday, I think. It's not the "happy" thing I'm "thinking" about, it's the Monday thing. Because if it's Monday and you are reading this, you are reading something I had posted for me.Why? I'm on set for something. Something I will be bringing you info about sometime in the future, maybe next year. (Just in case some of you were like: "Why does Da7e get a column when he doesn't do anything else for Lr?").As a result, these 6 Things have been written in advance, saved and activated by one of my Lr Compatriots. I'm unreachable at the moment, though you can probably collect vagaries on my Twitter Account.Since I've been working hard to make sure this code is as pretty as it can be considering I'm writing across multiple platforms and their various formatting whoopsies, the code on this post is clean, but some of the entries are rushed.

Empire have debuted a new UK poster for Dog Pound. The film, which premiered the Tribeca Film Festival, has been met with acclaim, leading to Optimum Releasing acquiring the UK distribution rights.
Synopsis: Three juvenile delinquents arrive at a correctional center and are put under the care of an experienced guard.
Dog Pound stars Lawrence Bayne, Shane Kippel, Mateo Morales and Adam Butcher and was directed by 30-year-old Kim Chapiron, who was responsible for the 2006 horror feature, Sheitan.
The film resembles that of other prison dramas such as Hunger and A Prophet, with the emphasis this time switching to a juvenile prison, giving a astonishing look at how young people deal with the uncompromising standards of prison.
Check out the UK poster below:
Dog Pound will hit UK cinemas on August 27, 2010.

If there's one thing more likely to leave you staggering dazed from the cinema than a brutally uncompromising prison drama - Bronson, Hunger, A Prophet take a bow - it's an uncompromising juvenile prison drama, with extra levels of searing vérité provided by a cast partly made up of real-life inmates. Step forward, then, Dog Pound and its suitably bruising new quad poster.Inspired in part by Alan Clarke's '70s borstal-set Scum, Dog Pound tells the story of three young inmates at Montana's Enola Vale Youth Correctional Center. As the title implies, it's a dog-eat-dog world for drug dealer Davis (Shane Kippel), car thief Angel (Mateo Morales) and violent tearaway Butch (Adam Butcher). Each learns the hard way that lock-up isn't quite what they remember from old episodes of Porridge.Dog Pound is the handiwork of 20 year-old Parisian Kim Chapiron, whose debut, Faustian horror Sheitan, saw him bring...

Actor Vincent Cassel (Hate, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Sheitan, Irreversible, Black Swan) can do evil like few others out there. On the strength of his on-screen lunacy alone, we're pretty excited about his next film, Redheads (also known as Our Day Will Come) from director Romain Gavras.
Though there's no solid premiere news just yet, we did manage to get our hands on the plot crunch and the first international trailer. Dig on them both below, and look for more really soon.

[While they only (bafflingly) screened the first half of the sprawling Mesrine biopic at Tiff, it is gonzo movie-making that blows the biopic formula away in the opposite fashion of Soderbergh's Che, here is my review pulled out from the archives.]
There are so few bonafide movie stars these days. These are actors that can light up the screen in such a way that even in a highly stylized and kinetic motion picture about an infamous personality, all eyes are riveted on the curve of the mouth or the lift of a brow of the player: Insouciance is celebrated. Vincent Cassel is certainly one of those actors. Whether he is hamming it up in the all star Ocean's movies (or the goofy Sheitan) or turning into a monster in Irreversible or La Haine. Few stars of Cassel's caliber can go from the charm and sex appeal of Warren Beatty to the pure motherfucker-ness Charles Bronson to full on nutter of Jack Nicholson. And director Jean-François Richet allows for all of the above in Mesrine: L'instinct de mort (aka Public Enemy Number One - Part One). While we get little real...
