"The Boys" universe is continuing to expand — and now the franchise is headed to Mexico. That's right! Amazon MGM Studios is now developing another show in the ever-growing universe based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson titled "The Boys: Mexico." While it's still in the very early stages, the show has assembled a pretty impressive team behind the scenes to get the ball rolling.
According to Deadline, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is set to write and executive produce the new Mexican-set spin-off. What's more, Gabriel Luna ("Andor") and Gael García Bernal ("Werewolf by Night") are also on board as executive producers and might also appear on screen, though they wouldn't be taking on major roles. Plot details for the series currently remain under wraps but the report states that the series is expected to eventually film in Mexico, rather than in the U.S. or Canada, for example.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: What is the worst performance by a great actor you usually love?
Carlos Aguilar (@Carlos_Film), The Wrap, Remezcla, MovieMaker Magazine
Collectively, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have been enlisted to enhance films by Almodovar, Spielberg, Larraín, Korine, and, of course, Alfonso Cuarón; in addition to many more efforts by the world’s leading directors. Both have also tried their hand at directing, with Luna having a more notable run behind the camera, and more recently basked in the attention of worldwide mainstream success in the form of “Coco” and “Rogue One.”
Yet, buried underneath that steady stream of good marks and auteur-driven opportunities, most of which this critic has been a champion of, is “Casa de Mi Padre.” Matt Piedmont’s debut feature, a Spanish-language satire starring Will Ferrell,...

Argentina’s totalitarian regime of the late 1970s made an invaluable contribution to the lexicon of euphemism by giving us the verb “to disappear,” a graceful way of describing the act of kidnapping and murdering political dissidents. In “The Clan,” based on the true story of a family that ran a lucrative enterprise snatching wealthy people for sizable ransoms during that bleak period, we see that the trickle-down theory applies both to euphemism and to Fascism. In the world of the kidnappers here, hostages are known as “guests” or “company,” and Arquimedes Puccio (Guillermo Francella, “Rudo y Cursi”) is praised for.

Recognition for Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu continues as the Sundance Institute has announced that it will present him with its Vanguard Leadership Award at the fifth annual Sundance Institute benefit on June 2, 2015 in Los Angeles. The evening brings the creative community together to highlight both a great visionary in independent film as well as an emerging artist with unique talent and creative independence. Iñárritu has also just received 3 Academy Award nominations for his latest film "Birdman" (Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and, since he was also the producer, Best Picture). The film earned a total of 9 nominations.
Gonzalez Iñárritu will be honored for the originality and independent spirit of his films, including "Amores Perros" (2000), "21 Grams" (2003), "Babel" (2006), "Biutiful" (2010) and "Birdman" (2014), all of which have earned Academy Award nominations. He is also the first Mexican director to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and by the Directors Guild of America for Best Director.
He is also the first Mexican-born director to have won the Prix de la mise en scene or best director award at Cannes (2006). "Amores Perros" is featured in the Sundance Collection at UCLA, an independent film preservation program established in 1997.
He has produced three films that appeared at the Sundance Film Festival: "Nine Lives" (2005), "Mother & Child" (2010) and "Rudo y Cursi" (2009).
Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, “The current health and vibrancy of independent film is best reflected in the stories from filmmakers who continue to push and break boundaries. Alejandro G. Iñárritu is among the most creative and innovative filmmakers working today, and the boldness, humanity and audacity of his films will inspire generations to come.”
Gonzalez Iñárritu said, “It comes as a great honor to receive this award from an organization whose mission, spirit and objectives are noble and have a profound effect on many filmmakers around the world.”
Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu will be the fourth recipient of the Vanguard Leadership Award, joining philanthropist and former Institute Trustee George Gund, journalist and film critic Roger Ebert and actress and arts advocate Glenn Close.
In addition to the Vanguard Leadership Award, the Institute presents the Vanguard Award, including a cash grant and mentorship from industry professionals and Institute staff, to an emerging artist with creative independence. Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild"), Ryan Coogler ("Fruitvale Station"), Damien Chazelle ("Whiplash") are past recipients, and the 2015 recipient will be announced in the spring. The Vanguard Awards were founded in 2011 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program and its founding director, Michelle Satter.

To say that "Gravity" is highly anticipated is an understatement, and it's easily the ticket to have for anyone hitting Venice this week, or Tiff next week. And as the marketing for the 3D space thriller ramps up with some TV spots hitting, director Alfonso Cuaron is helping his son Jonas Cuaron — co-writer on "Gravity" — get his next feature off the ground. Variety reports that Papa Cuaron will executive produce "Desierto," co-written by his son and Mateo Garcia, with Jonas to direct. Gael Garcia Bernal will star in the movie as Moises, one of pair of men who cross the border illegally from Mexico to the United States, and the find themselves on the run from a drunken vigilante who takes border patrol a little too far. Sounds pretty interesting, and it's a reunion for Alfonso Cuaron and Bernal. The filmmaker has produced previous Bernal starring movies including "Rudo Y Cursi,...

Girls Just Wanna Have Blood: Heckerling’s Vampire Comedy a Light Bite
Director Amy Heckerling reunites with her Clueless (1995) star for a female vampire buddy comedy, Vamps, her first effort since 2007’s I Could Never Be Your Woman. Granted a limited theatrical release to be followed quickly with a Blu-ray drop date only weeks later, the film is actually getting a heavier promotional push than her last, which went straight to DVD in the Us market. There’s certainly nothing edgy about her vampire rom-com, and neither does it revamp the genre or the careers of cast and crew, and was perhaps unwisely made during a frenzied adolescent vampire craze that’s finally on the wane. What it does feature are two likeable, cutesy lead ladies and a bevy of supporting performers threaded throughout its breezy running time, unfortunately hampered by several instances of terrible CGI that should have been excised altogether.

In what has to be one of the oddest romantic pairings, A Little Bit of Heaven stars Kate Hudson as a terminally ill woman who falls in love with Gael Garcia Bernal. Sure ladies love Ggb and this movie's making no attempts to entice guys to watch it, but still, you have to wonder why Bernal signed on for this movie. An excellent actor who generally picks solid material ranging from early stuff like Amores Perros and Y Tu Mama Tambien to more recent fare like Rudo y Cursi and Casa de Mi Padre which hits theaters tomorrow. Maybe there's more to this movie than meets the eye. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp reunite to adapt the popular cult sci-fi television series from the 1960s and early '70s into a feature length...

[1] Game of Thrones helmer Brian Kirk has worked mostly in television, but he's been making moves toward the big screen in recent months. He was up for the job [2] of directing Thor 2 before Patty Jenkins won the job, and over the summer he signed on [3] for Paper Wings with Tom Cruise. Now he's landed another intriguing feature -- the Guillermo del Toro-produced thriller Midnight Delivery. More details after the jump. We first heard about the picture way back last fall [4], when del Toro joined up with Universal Pictures to develop the project. Neil Cross is writing the script from an idea by del Toro, about a man who becomes a drug mule in order to save his son's life. The premise of the movie suggests it'll be short on the supernatural horror del Toro's usually known for, but del Toro's worked in more mundane settings before -- he...

For his follow-up to District 9, director Neill Blomkamp is adding variety to his ensemble cast. We have the big Hollywood stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Then, there is his D9 break-out lead Sharlto Copley and everyone’s favorite character actor, William Fichtner. Brazilian actor Wagner Moura of of Elite Squad fame is our villain and the latest addition the cast was Alice Braga. But now we have a brand new player, Variety reports.

Mexican film-maker 'pays it forward' by nurturing new talent, such as Julia's Eyes writer-director Guillem Morales
It is as the creator of spectacular, tactile and uniquely gooey visions that the Mexican film-maker Guillermo del Toro is rightly treasured. From the clammy fairytale underworld of Pan's Labyrinth to the throbbing Ovid overkill of his Hellboy movies, no one else outside David Cronenberg or Jan Svankmajer gives such good ooze. But the 46-year-old director has another life – less celebrated, though every bit as vital to him – as a producer of other people's work. Personal taste has kept him anchored largely in horror movies, such as Spanish hit The Orphanage and the forthcoming Disney chiller remake Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark. He also had a hand in the bittersweet football comedy Rudo Y Cursi, while his post as creative consultant at DreamWorks Animation has enabled him to sprinkle his magic dust over a slate that includes Megamind,...

Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal have reunited once again for the new Will Ferrell comedy, "Casa de Mi Padre." The flick looks hysterical. Will speaking in Spanish and acting like a tough rancher and those two guys showing off their much underused funny bones should lead to many risas (that's laughs in Spanish for you Gringos).
This reteaming makes me happy for a number of reasons. One, it means that I can follow-up on that dinner that Gael owes me when we inevitably meet again. Two, it means that we get to see them in a flick together again. And, three, it means that I perhaps may get the assignment to interview them at the junket.
The last time the three of us sat in a room together, we laughed, chatted about their 2009 joint endeavor, "Rudo Y Cursi" and, oh yeah, we all kissed. It's more or less what it sounds like.

No, you're not having a psychotic episode, that really is Will Ferrell speaking Spanish as the lone gringo in an all-Spanish language movie.
Awesome.
After nearly a decade as a leading man, playing drunken frat guys, egotistical racecar drivers, self-important news anchors, ice skating champions, and ex-pimp police officers, you'd think Ferrell had done it all. He even fit a Woody Allen movie in there. Well now he's really going out on a limb as the lead in the nothing-but-Spanish novelty comedy "Casa de Mi Padre," and even we had to slap ourselves hard in the face to prove we weren't hallucinating this brilliance.
Originally announced with a bizarre press release stating that the former "Saturday Night Live" great became attached to the film as the result of a lawsuit, it's actually produced by Ferrell and Adam McKay through their Gary Sanchez shingle, and directed by ex-SNL writer and Emmy-winner Matt Piedmont.

I was there for the first press screening of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful in Cannes, wow, eight months ago now, and whilst I had a few problems with the movie itself, the lead performance from Javier Bardem was out of this world. Gripping, multi-layered and immensely watchable… I was particularly pleased to see him win a Best Actor nom this week, a rare feat for a European actor leading a foreign-language film and whilst he won’t beat the career best turn of Colin Firth in The King’s Speech, it must almost feel like a win just to be nominated.
Biutiful, starring Javier Bardem and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is released on 28th January and to celebrate a Bardem/ Iñárritu DVD bundle (consisting of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Amores Perros and Rudo Y Cursi), to give away. Read on to find out how…

Will Ferrell is set to star in Untitled Spanish Comedy with Y Tu Mama Tambien costars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. The twist to that is that the movie willl be in Spanish with English subtitles. When it was first announced, the film was said to be in the same style as Spanish telenovelas.
We finally have a synopsis for the film, but it could easily change, since the film is in the test screening phase. The project is definitely unique and could be good.

Foreign film specialists Music Box Films have grabbed the rights to Marcel Rasquin's directorial debut - a sport-themed drama where the two exits for a better life are either making the team or joining another "sort" of team. Considering that the field is rather strong this year, Brother (Hermano) -- this year's Venezuelan submission for the Foreign Language Oscar, does appear to be a long-shot for a shortlist nomination. Gist: Written by Rohan Jones and Rasquin, in the most dangerous place in the world, two brothers dream of salvation, by kicking goals out of there. On this pitch, life is on the line. Worth Noting: The film was accepted in what we considered the second tier of the top film festivals on the circuit (top 20 to 40 range) Moscow Film Festival, Shanghai Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival and São Paulo International Film Festivals. Do We Care?: A slightly different...

While this is not a feature-length film, this does deserve some reporting. Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami (the Japanese novelist whose work has gotten little to nearly no screen or film adaptations), The Second Bakery Attack did still garner attention from Mexican writer-director Carlos Cuarón (brother to Alfonso Cuarón, who directed films such as Y Tu Mama Tambien, Children Of Men, and Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban). Carlos himself has directed noteworthy films, such as Rudo Y Cursi, which starred Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.

Carlos Cuarón, brother of director Alfonso Cuarón, co-writer of Y Tu Mamá También and writer/director of Rudo Y Cursi, has directed a new short film. The Second Bakery Attack is based on the story of the same name by Japanese author Haruki Murakami, and stands as one of a very few adaptations of the author's works. The film stars Kirsten Dunst and Brian Geraghty, and these are the first stills. Stills were found on Tumblr [1] (via The Playlist [2]) and the director told CNN [3], It's short, but there's meticulous attention to detail just like a Murakami story! ...To me, Murakami's works are universal, and at the same time very Japanese. This is what makes the project so intriguing for me -- I did set the story in the United States but the tone of the conversations, the situation … somehow it's very Tokyo. The Short Shorts Film Festival synpopsizes the film...

Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal (Rudo y Cursi, Blindness) has booked a role as five-time world boxing champ Roberto Durán in an upcoming biopic called Hands of Stone. Ben Silverman and Jay Weisleder are producing with Paul Webster of Shine Pictures. In addition to Bernal starring, Al Pacino is circling the role of trainer Ray Arcel, and Spanish actor Oscar Jaenada (The Losers) is also in a key role. Directing is Venezuelan-born filmmaker Jonathan Jakubowicz from his own screenplay. "The infamous 'no mas' fight is the biggest enigma in the history of boxing. This movie will answer that enigma," said director Jakubowicz. Panama-born Roberto Durán made his professional boxing debut in 1968 as a 16-year-old and retired in 2002 at age 50. In 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard to capture the Wbc welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in the November rematch, saying "no ...

It’s not a bad time to be part of the Cuaron family. Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron is prepping his sci-fi film Gravity. His brother Carlos recently directed Rudo y Cursi. Alfonso’s son Jonas helped him out writing Gravity and now Heat Vision reports Warner Bros has picked up another script.
The details on the project are extremely scarce, but we know it is a “gritty thriller set in Mexico City.” Jon Berg, the Warners Senior VP of Production came up with the idea and will oversee producers Gianni Nunnari and Craig Flores will executive produce.
As for Gravity, the studio is in search for a female lead and after Natalie Portman‘s fantastic performance in Black Swan, she is at the top of the list.
Jonas also co-directed a documentary short The Shock Doctrine with Alfonso and Nancy Klein. You can check it out below.

Look at those cool bros. Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, the dynamic duo behind such films as Y tu mama tambien and Rudo y Cursi are apparently not sick of working with each other because they’re going to co-star with Will Ferrell is his upcoming Spanish language comedy, Casa de mi padre.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luna will play Ferrell’s brother and Bernal will play a family friend. In addition, Jared Hess regular Hector Jimenez and Genesis Rodriguez have joined the cast of the secretive telenovela comedy.
Just to repeat myself, this film will be completely in Spanish with English subtitles.
Matt Piedmont will direct from a screenplay by Andrew Steele. Piedmont and Steele previously worked on the web series, “The Carpet Brothers” as well as a few seasons of “Saturday Night Live” with Ferrell.
Not so surprisingly, Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions is producing the project.

Matt Piedmont, best known for his directorial work with Funny or Die, is helming Casa de mi padre, a Spanish language comedy starring Will Ferrell.
While it’s a surprise to see Piedmont and Ferrell take on comedy in a foreign tongue, Piedmont is securing the film’s success by adding as many talented and notable Hispanic actors as possible. Most recently The Hollywood Reporter announced Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, who co-starred in Y tu mamá también and Rudo y Cursi, have joined the ranks which includes: Genesis Rodriguez (Entourage), Pedro Armendariz Jr. (Casa de los babys), Hector Jimenez (Gentleman Bronchos), and Adrian Martinez (It’s Kind of a Funny Story).
It’s a smart cast lineup as American audiences are likely to follow Ferrell, while Bernal and Luna both hold international appeal. Add the sultriness Rodriquez with the comedy prowess of Jimenez and Martinez and the film...

Funny or Die Presents director Matt Piedmont will soon be directing Will Ferrell in the Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi padre. That's odd enough, and now Ferrell has two great co-stars: Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, who are making quite the career of working in films together. (They've acted opposite one another in Y tu mamá también and Rudo y Cursi, and exec produced films like Sin Nombre and Sólo quiero caminar, in which Luna also starred.) But working opposite Farrell could be something altogether different. THR reports the news, and says that the story, which is being kept quiet, will be subtitled and "told in an overly dramatic telenovela style." Diego Luna will play Ferrell's brother, while Gael Garcia Bernal plays "a family friend." Also in the cast are "Genesis Rodriguez as Ferrell's love interest, Pedro Armendariz Jr., Hector Jimenez and Adrian Martinez." A quick review of photos...

Yes, that’s right: Will Ferrell’s new Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre (House of My Father) is organising a reunion for Y tu mama Tambien stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, who have signed on to the film.Okay, so the friends have worked together since then – most notably on Rudo y Cursi – but now they also get to work with Ferrell, who is going all out with a film set in full melodramatic telenovela style which will feature English subtitles. While nothing is yet known about the plot, we do know that Garcia Bernal will play a friend of Ferrell’s family and Luna will be his brother. And the cast is expanding further, with Pedro Armendariaz Jr, Nacho Libre’s Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez and the superbly named Genesis Rodriguez, who has agreed to be Ferrell’s love interest for the movie.Funny or Die...

Braven Films, a New York-based production company, is tackling a biopic about Mexican rock singer, songwriter and composer Gloria Trevi as its first project.
Swiss-born Christian Keller will make his directorial debut with "Trevi," which is to be produced by Barrie Osborne and Braven head Frida Torresblanco.
Braven is launching with more than $6 million in private funding to use for the development of feature screenplays, with access to other funds for production.
" 'Trevi' is the perfect inaugural project for us because Gloria Trevi embodies everything we want our films to be about -- she was inspirational, creative, provocative and intriguing on so many levels," Torresblanco said.
Although "Trevi" focuses on a Latin American icon, Braven said the majority of its projects will focus on independent American cinema.
Torresblanco served for eight years as the head of Alfonso Cuaron's Esperanto label and was a producer on Guillermo del Toro...
