M. Emmet Walsh is dead at the age of 88, his manager Sandy Joseph told IndieWire. The grizzled character actor appeared in Hollywood movies across 55 years and was one of the most recognizable “oh yeah, that guy!” performers in the industry. Even just by saying “grizzled character actor” you probably pictured him, even if you didn’t know his name.
Walsh had bit parts in “Midnight Cowboy,” “Little Big Man,” “Serpico,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and “The Gambler” at the start of his career. But it’s two films from the early 1980s that put him on the map and truly lodged him in the consciousness of cinephiles: “Blade Runner” and “Blood Simple.” In Ridley Scott’s film he played Capt. Bryant, who sends Harrison Ford’s Decker on his quest to terminate the escaped, murderous replicants. Or “retire” them, rather. That’s the kind of euphemism Walsh, in his rumpled way,...

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

Jamie Lee Curtis Drew Inspiration From This ‘Three’s Company’ Star for Her ‘Freaky Friday’ Character
Actor Jamie Lee Curtis had to rely on a lot of physical comedy for her role in Freaky Friday. So, the star took a cue from this Three’s Company alum to inform her performance.
How this ‘Three’s Company’ star affected Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘Freaky Friday’ performance John Ritter, Suzanne Somers, Joyce Dewitt | ABC Photo Archives/Getty Images
Curtis had the chance to show off her comedic chops by doing the 2003 feature Freaky Friday. The movie saw Curtis and Lohan playing a mother and daughter who switched bodies. In a resurfaced interview with Phase 9, Curtis asserted that Freaky Friday might’ve been the most successful feature she made at the time. The project fell in Curtis’ lap during a period where she was exploring interests other than acting. But apart from liking the film’s script, everything about Freaky Friday accommodated Curtis’ situation. In the end, Curtis felt she had to do the movie.

"I can't tell you how good it is... to have all of under the same roof again." Someone over at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) really loves mashups. This video plays like one of their montages during the Academy Awards show every year, but this one won't be airing during the broadcast in March. The Academy debuted a short "Happy Holidays from The Academy" mashup video on their YouTube featuring a medley of holiday classics. Aside from all the regulars, they've also got some oddball ones like Christmas with the Kranks, Jingle All the Way, Krampus, and The War With Grandpa. Plus classics like White Christmas, The Apartment, Meet Me in St Louis, and It's a Wonderful Life. It's just a nice celebration of the magic of the movies and how they are connected with the holiday spirit and holiday season. Christmas is just around the corner!

Back in 1996, movie titan Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most notable ventures away from laying waste to camouflaged aliens, gunning down police stations and impaling mad Aussies, was in the comedies Kindergarten Cop and Twins. They were both decent movies, but Twins in particular was an unusual and surprising move for the Austrian Oak. However, it did ultimately turn out to be a fairly good movie, mainly thanks to the unlikely chemistry between Arnie and the great Danny De Vito. Twins was a financial success but the relative critical bashing Arnie’s next movie would get, the admittedly decent Eraser from 1996, meant he was in need of career resurgence.
So, what better way to go about kickstarting his slightly stuttering career than to throw himself head first into very unfamiliar territory: the Christmas movie. On the face of it, it probably seemed like a good idea; after all, both Twins and Kindergarten Cop...

With Christmas just one week (and one day) away, we wanted to ask you, the people, what your favorite Christmas Movie is? It doesn’t have to be the movie you think is the best, just the one that you eagerly anticipate watching every year. Do you look forward to seeing Jack Skellington discover the true meaning of Christmas in the Christmas Movie Classic The Nightmare Before Christmas or watching Kevin McCallister take down the Wet/ Sticky Bandits in Home Alone 1&2 or perhaps seeing Clark W. Believe it or not, Eddie Murphy never has attempted to dive into the holiday movie genre in his 40-year-plus career in films, but with Candy Cane Lane he has found an ideal premise to add to his ever-growing filmography of family-friendly comedies along the lines of Daddy Day Care, Dr. Dolittle, and countless others.
He reunites after 30 years with his Boomerang director Reginald Hudlin, along with screenwriter Kelly Younger. The latter came up with the idea based on his own experiences growing up in El Segundo, CA, and spending time every Christmas on the real Candy Cane Lane, a local event created in 1949 showcasing a neighborhood that dazzles with its decorations, with each family trying to outdo the other in spectacular holiday fashion.
It wasn’t much of a leap to invent an all-out special effects-driven action comedy fantasy around the setting, and that is exactly what they done. And...

Hollywood comedies are a dime a dozen. Yet, many receive flak for their attempts to tickle our funny bones, while only a select few earn rave reviews or accolades from critics. Honestly, I can only think of a handful of comedic films that made their way to the tops of end-of-year lists, while also recalling hundreds more that drew the ire of bigwigs like Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel for accomplishing what they set out to do.
Don't get me wrong. Bad comedies exist, but everyone's sense of humor is different. Some people get a good chuckle from the physical pratfalls enacted by Chris Farley, while others revel in the low-brow antics of Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey. At any rate, the purpose of a comedy is to supply laughs and entertain its audience. The purpose of this article is to highlight a handful of poorly reviewed comedies that are...

How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

One of the best reviews of any piece of media was Andy Klein's review of the 2004 film "Christmas with the Kranks," printed in the now-defunct CityBeat weekly. Because of the foibles of online archiving and the shuttering of many news outlets in 2004, CityBeat articles are no longer available. But in his review, Klein likened Joe Roth's anti-classic to the rise of fascism in Europe, holding the film's Dan Aykroyd character as leading a Nazi-like neighborhood charge against the people on their block -- the leads, played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen -- who would dare, Dare, to...

Christmas may be more than a month away, but that isn’t stopping streaming platforms from adding some holiday cheer to their November lineups.
Beginning with the animated film “Angela’s Christmas” on Nov. 1, Netflix is adding several holiday movies to its streaming slate, including “The Holiday Calendar,” “The Princess Switch,” and “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding.” Hulu and Amazon Prime are also following suit with “A Cinderella Christmas” on Nov. 15 and “Christmas With the Kranks” on Nov. 1, respectively.
November is also seeing the premiere of several platform originals, including the final season of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Julia Roberts’ Amazon Prime debut, “Homecoming.” The documentary “McQueen” is also joining Amazon’s slate while Netflix will launch “Doctor Strange,” “Sixteen Candles,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.” Hulu will see a similarly large influx of new films, including “Goldeneye,” “Amelie,” and “Kick-Ass.”

It’s been 25 years since “The Firm” raced its way into theaters, introducing audiences to the dynamic storytelling style of John Grisham and making a ton of a money in the process. The success of “The Firm” made Grisham’s distinct blend of clever legal thrills and pulpy melodrama attract some of the best filmmakers of the decade, turning smart dramas into major blockbusters and earning multiple Oscar nominations in the process.
Although the wave of Grisham adaptations eventually died down, they helped define a box office era. So let’s take a look at every feature-length film based on a Grisham story to see which films are classics, and which ones should be found in contempt.

It seems like every year some studio releases a harmless yet predictable holiday comedy centering on an ensemble cast of recognizable actors (usually as disparate members of a family) in an effort to capitalize on the “most wonderful time of the year.” Films like last year’s Love the Coopers and Christmas with the Kranks are smart investments for production companies because of their broad appeal and moderate budgets. So, naturally, 2016 isn’t without its own edition of this reliable trend. Fans of those films should then be quite pleased with this year’s model: Almost Christmas.
The movie – written and directed by David E. Talbert (First Sunday) – centers on Walter Meyers (Danny Glover), the patriarch of a dysfunctional family. Just days before the first Christmas after his wife’s death, Walter attempts to reunite his children for the holidays. Busy with their own lives and still processing the grief of their mother’s passing,...

The only thing more reliable than a disastrous family gathering for the holidays is the cliched dramatizing of such an event in the form of a Christmas-set family dramedy. Think Four Christmases, The Family Stone, Christmas with the Kranks — there are good ones too, probably, but for the most part the formula is doomed to failure. Multiple story threads and characters come together for a holiday filled with arguments, gags, and conflict that ends in disaster only to be saved when everyone learns the value of family. The endings are always far too trite and conclusive, the characters are never all that developed, and the message of family togetherness and love gets lost in the shuffle. Well the filmmakers behind Love the Coopers got the memo on bad, holiday-set family comedies and decided to do something about it. They made a bad, holiday-set family comedy… with narration by the family dog. Charlotte...

Since the turn of the new millennium, the world has been given the gift of some truly remarkable films. Unfortunately, this hasn't necessarily extend into the realm of holiday movies. Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - they all came out before the year 2000, and only a handful of classics have been released that could rival their status as seasonal staples.

With the dog days of summer finally upon us, it's good to find an excuse (any excuse) to dip out of the heat and into a coolly air-conditioned living room. And what better way to spend your time than by watching things on Netflix? Behold, a list of things that are new to Netflix in July.
There are a bunch of new Christmas movies on the streaming service, part of the company's "Christmas in July" program (things like "Bad Santa" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas"), as well as a handful of Disney classics (like "Tarzan" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"). There are also, as always, newer films that you might have missed, but don't have to anymore -- everything from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" (starring the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman) to this year's "Wolf Creek 2," a high-octane Australian thriller that seriously doesn't disappoint.

Has it actually been ten years already since we have been engaged in the realm of films dating back to 2004? A decade is certainly a long period of time to build our appreciation for cinema up until this critical point in 2014. In looking back at 2004, one can recall fondly some of the more desirable releases to come out at that time. For instance, the superb Million Dollar Baby was the Academy Award-winning film for 2004. Even the comedies that were released that year gave movie audiences cause to rejoice with such ditties as the sleeper indie hit Napoleon Dynamite and well as mainstream laughers in Mean Girls and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.
Unfortunately for every gem there is a dud and then some. And 2004 had its share to say the least. So how about getting nostalgic and recalling some of the notable misses that were heaped on misled moviegoers...

Once mooted for Shia Labeouf, John Grisham's The Associate is now set to star Zac Efron instead...
It's been some time since the last John Grisham movie adaptation made it to the screen, with 2004's Christmas With The Kranks - based on the book Skipping Christmas - the most recent one.
That said, several of his books seem suddenly destined for the big screen again. A movie take on The Testament is apparently in the hands of director Stuart Blumberg (Thanks For Sharing), although we can't find anything concrete on that at the moment. Furthermore, The Racketeer had been linked with Safe House director Daniel Espinosa, and rumours persist of a film of The Partner.
And now you can add to list The Associate. The film version of that has attracted Zac Efron, who is set to produce and star in the movie.

When Adam McKay's Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was released in theaters during the summer of 2004, it wasn.t exactly a sensation. Opening the week after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, the comedy managed to make only $28 million its first weekend (good enough for only #2 on the top 10), and by the end of its domestic run it had only made $85 million, good enough for 30th place overall at the end of the year. Other movies with similar numbers, like Ladder 49, Christmas With The Kranks and Along Came Polly have been all but completely forgotten. and yet Anchorman continues to live on. While Paramount Pictures spent years resisting the idea of an Anchorman sequel due to the first film.s inability to find an audience overseas, the truth is that the film is now considered to be a modern comedy classic. Medium-sized as the movie.s initial audience may have been,...

If you aren't in the holiday spirit by now, then we have a little video that will, shy of pour you a glass of frothy eggnog or singing you a Christmas carol, put you directly into the yuletide mood. It's a "supercut" of famous Christmas movies and it's pretty much a blast.
While there are some odd decisions (why so many scenes from "Christmas With the Kranks?") and omissions (the rich "Christmas horror" subgenre is missing almost entirely and animated films are also pretty much absent), it's still a really fun little reel to watch, especially if you are finding yourself low in the Christmastime joy department.
The video was put together by the fine folks over at Screen Junkies, who are also responsible for the gut-busting "Honest Trailers" series, and so there is a fair amount of irreverence to go along with all the heart-tugging, mistletoe-crouching feel good vibes.

Ranked: The 100 Best Christmas Movies of All Time Your survival guide to those TBS and ABC Family marathons. By: Matt Patches 100. All I Want for Christmas It's like House Arrest, but with all of the charm replaced by tinsel. Not based on the Mariah Carey song (but maybe it would have been better if it had been?). Worth one viewing for Leslie Nielsen as “Santa.” 99. Christmas with the Kranks Awful people celebrate Christmas too, you know! Based on a novel by John Grisham, the quality of this Tim Allen/Jamie Lee Curtis comedy depends mostly on one's tolerance for oafish comedy and the manufactured elements of the holiday. 98. Santa with Muscles Starring Hulk Hogan as a millioniare-bodybuilder-turned-amnesiac-mall-Santa-crime-fighter, Santa with Muscles is a bonkers Christmas adventure that might have been better as a Yahoo Serious vehicle. Much like the shopping malls and department stores, Hollywood often jumps the gun on trotting out their winter holiday products. We’ve not cooked the Thanksgiving turkey (or fully digested Free Birds), but the first Christmas flick arrives at the multiplexes this weekend. So will it be a perennial classic like A Christmas Story or White Christmas or a lump of coal like Christmas With The Kranks? Well, it does have something in common with one of the newer classics, National Lampoon’S Christmas Vacation. It’s a sequel (well Nlcv was the third visit with the Grisswalds) too. In 1999 a group of old friends got together for a big wedding in the appropriately titled The Best Man. And now they re-unite, not for another stroll down the aisle, but to exchange gifts (and secrets) in The Best Man Holiday. So, who’s been naughty and who’s been nice?...

An all-star cast of singers become actors for "Angels Sing," a wan little holiday film that manages to show a little heart once it finally gets going.
Harry Connick Jr. stars as an Austin, Texas, history professor who doesn't put much stock in Christmas. Michael is always angling to dodge doing both Thanksgiving and Christmas with his parents (Kris Kristofferson, Fionnula Flanagan) for reasons he's reluctant to tell his granny-loving son (Chandler Canterbury). His wife (Connie Britton) is understanding.
Eventually, the kid finds out -- dad lost a brother over the holidays, years ago. Kind of ruined the day for him.
But Michael's ongoing house-hunting throws him in the path of this chuckling old man (Willie Nelson) with a McMansion for sale.
"How much, Mr. ... uuhhhh?"
"Call me 'Nick.'"
They seal the deal and Michael finds himself with the showplace of Live Oak Lane, one of those Christmas-crazed corners...

Do you know it has been nine years since the last John Grisham adaptation? And it was Christmas With The Kranks? God does it make me feel old when I think back to the 90s and how it seemed like every couple of months there was another movie "Based on the number one best seller by John Grisham." Daniel Espinosa looks set to direct the movie version of John Grisham's thriller, The Racketeer...
Movies based on John Grisham books used to be a near annual occurence in the 1990s. We had good ones (The Client, A Time To Kill), we had bad ones (The Pelican Brief, The Chamber), and we had ones that were fun, but seemed to go on forever (The Firm). And for a while, of course, it seemed as though director Joel Schumacher would keep making them alternately with his Batman projects.
When Batman & Robin bombed though, Schumacher abandoned his plan to make The Runaway Jury (which subsequently turned up in 2003, with Gary Fleder directing), and Grisham seemingly became less interested in selling the movie rights to his bestselling thrillers. In fact, the last film based on a Grisham book was 2004's Christmas With The Kranks, which was the movie take on Skipping Christmas.

In the mid-90s, it seemed only a few months would pass until another film adaptation of a John Grisham novel popped up at a multiplex. The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, The Chamber, and The Rainmaker all came out between 1993-1997, adding to Grisham's legacy as one of America's most popular thriller writers. The most recent film adaptations of his work, Runaway Jury and Christmas with the Kranks, weren't big successes, but THR reports that a film version of Grisham's newest novel, The Racketeer, will hit the big screen under the direction of Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa. Read on! Here's the official synopsis of The Racketeer from Amazon: Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered.

It's coming on nine years since the last movie based on a work by John Grisham hit the screen ("Christmas With The Kranks"), and ten years if you stick strictly to his bread-and-butter legal thrillers ("Runaway Jury"). But Grisham is still a big name and a bestselling author, and it's no surprise that Hollywood has been eager to get back in the game with the writer. NBC tried, and failed, to turn "The Firm" into a series, and over the past year a number of his books have been developing including "The Associate," "Calico Joe" and "The Partner." And now another is entering the fray. Fox 2000 and New Regency are teaming up for "The Racketeer," landing the rights and setting it up as a vehicle for "Safe House" director Daniel Espinosa. The book tells the story of a jailed former attourney who holds the key to solving the murder of a federal judge,...

They must have fed the original "Gremlins" after midnight, because suddenly, there are more. Yes, it's another day and another unnecessary movie reboot potentially underway. Shocker.
It's been almost 30 years since that lovable little mogwai Gizmo sprouted a slew of furball killing machines in the Warner Bros. favorite "Gremlins," so, yeah, it's totally ripe, per Hollywood's laziness remake tradition right about now.
According to Vulture, the studio is currently negotiating with Steven Spielberg's production company Amblin Entertainment for the right to breathe new life into the classic horror comedy. While such talks may have been unsuccessful in the past, there's reportedly reason to believe it might pan out for Warner Bros. this go-round.
As with the first version (and its sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch"), Spielberg would not direct but likely would be involved with the film in some respect. Spielberg previously touted the story as "one of...
