Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC Theatres, gives me a choice.
We’re supposed to have a 20-minute interview in Las Vegas at CinemaCon, a four-day gathering of movie theater owners and Hollywood studios designed to breathlessly hype the year’s upcoming blockbusters, but he’s distracted. Executives from Warner Bros. want him to come backstage before their presentation to schmooze with the filmmakers they brought to Caesars Palace. So here are my options: Stick to the plan, with Aron’s mind flittering elsewhere, or cancel other commitments to get dinner and much more time on the record. The second choice, a publicist’s nightmare, makes it more likely that the AMC chief will say something controversial. But Aron has endured a pandemic that shut down his business, withstood roller-coaster share prices and sidestepped nagging speculation that he’s about to get canned. He thrives on risk.

A New Orleans group is suing Beyoncé over her smash hit “Break My Soul” — accusing her of copyright infringement stemming from her use of a sample from Big Freedia, who they claim illegally used lyrics from their 2002 song “Release a Wiggle.”
According to a complaint filed in Louisiana federal court on Wednesday, members of Da Showstoppaz — Tessa Avie, Keva Bourgeois, Henri Braggs, and Brian Clark — alleged that the Cowboy Carter artist specifically sampled Big Freedia’s 2014 track “Explode,” which illegally used “copyrighted lyrics, melody, and musical arrangement” from their 2002 song.

Movie theaters can’t sell tickets if they don’t have a lot of new blockbusters to advertise on their marquees. And the actors and writers strikes that ground Hollywood to a standstill in 2023 left studios with fewer movies to release as 2024 got started. As the biggest exhibitor in the world, AMC Theatres certainly felt the lack of franchise movies and tentpole films as the year kicked off, but the company still managed to beat projections with its quarterly earnings. That was partly thanks to the March release of “Dune: Part Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4,” popular sequels that helped off-set declining admissions in January and February.
Despite the late breaking entry of some must-see movies, revenues at the the theater chain fell to $951.4 million from $954.4 million in the prior-year quarter. However, net losses for the three-month period ending in March narrowed to $163.5 million, or 62 cents per share. That...

Even before Beyoncé kicked off her solo career, it was clear that she was a legend-in-the-making. As the de facto leader of Destiny’s Child, she was a guiding light for the girl group and helped shepherd them to stardom in both the pop and R&b spaces. The group was at their height (and still very much together) as she launched her solo career, first with “Work It Out” for the Austin Powers in Goldmember soundtrack and then with more gusto on 2003’s “Crazy in Love.”

The Grammys are handed out every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music professionals representing different genres across the industry. For multiple years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by clandestine nomination review committees, but the academy got rid of most of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large. Scroll down for our latest racetrack odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we’ll be updating this list throughout the season.
SEEGrammy Album of the Year: All the Winners in Grammy Awards History
Not everyone in the industry appreciates the Grammys, though. At the 2021 awards The Weeknd didn’t get a single nomination despite an acclaimed album (“After Hours”) and a song (“Blinding Lights”) so popular that Billboard ranked it as their number-one single of 2021 and the number-one song of all time.

AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, is leaning into distribution.
The company is expanding its distribution team with a key hire and promotion, underscoring its commitment to releasing its own movies in addition to showcasing titles from traditional and independent studios. AMC Theatres launched its distribution team with the premieres of last year’s concert films, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.”
Stephanie Terifay has joined AMC in the newly created position of VP of Distribution. She will begin on April 26. In this role, Terifay is responsible for engaging the music industry to develop future projects, tailoring distribution strategies and marketing plans to maximize fan engagement. Unsurprisingly, Beyonce‘s new album “Cowboy Carter” debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. But it was impressive even by her own standards. It launched with 407,000 equivalent album units based on its combined record sales, individual track sales and online streams. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
This is the eighth number-one album for Beyonce following “Dangerously in Love” (2003), “B’Day” (2006), “I Am … Sasha Fierce” (2008), “4” (2011), “Beyonce” (2013), “Lemonade” (2016) and “Renaissance” (2022). She ranks fourth among women for the most chart-toppers ever. This was also the best streaming week of her career with 232,000 units coming from on-demand online listens (which comes out to 300.41 million streams), no doubt helped by the fact that this was Beyonce’s longest album with 27 tracks.

Beyoncé has landed another No. 1 album with Cowboy Carter.
Her country music album bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, according to Billboard and Luminate. Cowboy Carter, which dropped March 29, debuted with 407,000 equivalent album units earned in the United States for the week ending April 4.
This marks Beyoncé’s eighth No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200. It also marks the biggest week for an album so far in 2024, and the biggest since Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which debuted with 1.653 million units in November.
It’s also Beyoncé’s biggest week since Lemonade debuted at No. 1 with 653,000 units in May 2016.
In addition, the album debuted atop several other Billboard charts, including Top Country Albums, Americana/Folk Albums and Top Album Sales.

On Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé mixes R&b, country, and some hard-hitting guitars, among many other elements, and as the artist herself is well aware, there used to be a name for that kind of American melange: rock & roll. She slyly acknowledges that fact with two Chuck Berry moments on the album, including a segment of “Maybellene,” his first hit, in which a Black genius helped invent rock & roll via revved-up country.
So, there’s an argument that Cowboy Carter — which the artist has made clear is a “Beyoncé album” rather...

According to Billboard, Beyonce‘s new “Cowboy Carter” album “is poised to set a new mark for the best first-week performance of 2024” thanks to multiple physical versions and strong streaming performance. So it’s no surprise that Gold Derby users are predicting the album to top the chart in its debut week with more than 300,000 equivalent album units based on its combined record sales, individual track sales and online streams. But what about in week two? Users have predicted that as well, and they say Beyonce will stay on top for the tracking period of April 5 through April 11. But one surprise release that wasn’t in our predictions center could dethrone her.

Fresh off releasing Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé has dropped her new “Pony Up Remix” for the album’s first single, “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
The surprise version of the track begins largely the same as the Cowboy Carter song before the action moves from the Lone Star State to Louisiana on the second verse, with the remix featuring a new verse that gallops along to a New Orleans bounce breakdown. According to the remix’s credits, The-Dream was also involved in the Pony Up production:
Along with the remix, Beyoncé also launched a new website — BeenCountry.

After Beyoncé’s revelatory new album Cowboy Carter arrived everywhere on Friday, March 29th, some fans weren’t so happy with the products they purchased. Beyoncé’s physical releases of Cowboy Carter left out some key tracks: “YA YA,” “Spaghettii,” “The Linda Martell Show,” “Oh Louisiana,” and “Flamenco” are all absent from the vinyls.
The CD version includes “Flamenco,” but per Rolling Stone, the limited edition CD was supposed to include an additional song — it turns out that “Flamenco” was that additional song all along, even though it appears on the digital release of Cowboy Carter. Vinyl purchasers, however, weren’t given “Flamenco” on their records, nor do the pair of Linda Martell-featuring tracks “Spaghettii” and “The Linda Martell Show” appear.
The BBC is positing that these songs were added to Cowboy Carter’s tracklist late, and thus could not be retrospectively added to the physical formats in time for the album’s release.

Beyoncé looked to fellow cultural titans to lasso inspiration for her new album “Cowboy Carter.”
The Grammy winner and “Dreamgirls” actress, who recently appeared in theaters with her “Renaissance” concert film, shared that she watched features such as Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” to craft her own “character” behind her debut country album.

Promotions for Beyoncé’s upcoming Cowboy Carter album made its way onto New York City museums Wednesday night, nearly a week ahead of its highly anticipated release.
Advertisements for the album, which is set to drop March 29, were seen projected on several museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, New Museum and the Museum of Art and Design.
However, Guggenheim shared in a statement with The Hollywood Reporter that the institution “was not informed about and did not authorize this activation. However, we invite the public — including Beyoncé and her devoted fans — to visit the museum May 16–20 when we present projections by artist Jenny Holzer on the facade of our iconic building to celebrate the opening of her major exhibition.”
The promo displayed on the outside of the Guggenheim Museum featured the phrases “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album,” as well as the album’s title and release date.

Beyoncé is getting candid about what led to the creation of Act II: Cowboy Carter, which is a continuation of her record-breaking album Renaissance.
The 2022 Grammy-winning album has long been rumored to be a part of a trilogy, with the upcoming album being the second installment. The artist announced Act II in a Super Bowl commercial and dropped two songs: “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.”
Beyoncé shared the cover art for the album on Instagram, along with a lengthy caption, celebrating the 10-day countdown to the Cowboy Carter release. She also thanked her fans for the support they’ve shown for the two songs that were released on Super Bowl Sunday.
“I feel honored to be the first Black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart,” she wrote. “That would not have happened without the outpouring of support from each and every one of you.

So many Beyoncé songs have changed the world — and one in particular changed Rihanna’s world. When the “Sos” singer was still part of a girl group, she auditioned for a producer by singing a song by Queen B. The producer in question went on to write two of Rihanna’s biggest early hits.

I throw around the concept of “Grammy darlings” a lot, but what exactly constitutes a Grammy darling? Is it just an artist who doesn’t lose Grammys often, like U2, Adele or Bruno Mars? Let’s go through a few top names.
Beyoncé: Darling
Listen, the most awarded person in Grammy history is definitely a darling. Granted, she has yet to win Album of the Year. However, more impressively, all of her projects have won at least one Grammy. Most have won multiple, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.” Beyoncé also gets nominations for pretty much anything she submits, and will likely become the first artist to nab nominations in rap, rock, R&b, dance, pop and country. On top of all that, it’s rare for Beyoncé to miss nominations in the general field, especially with no nominations review committees anymore to potentially force her out.

Beyoncé has been in the spotlight for decades, but her renaissance has only just begun with the upcoming release of her new album, Act II: Cowboy Carter.

AMC CEO Adam Aron can’t thank Taylor Swift and Beyoncé enough.
AMC Entertainment reported its Q4 earnings on Wednesday, February 28, with the theater chain seeing revenue growth of double digits in the quarter. Aron credited all of that growth — “literally, all of it,” Aron stressed — to AMC itself distributing both “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé.” It did this despite box office being down on the whole across the industry in the fourth quarter of the year.
“These two movies added greatly to movie theatre ticket sales across our entire industry, as just these two films represented fully one ninth of the complete fourth quarter domestic industry-wide box office,” Aron said in a statement. “This is a stunning result given that neither of these films were on anyone’s drawing board until mid-year, and that they were the first movies ever distributed by AMC in our entire 103-year history.

A. G. Cook began 2024 by releasing a single, “Silver Needle Golden Thread,” followed by the announcement of his third studio album, Britpop. Now, the PC Music founder is back with the album’s title track, “Britpop,” featuring Charli Xcx.
Opening with Charli delivering the refrain “Brit/ Brit like Britpop,” the track evolves in typical Cook fashion, introducing layers of shimmery, bubbling synths which eventually blossom into a full-fledged dance arrangement. Around the midway point, Charli’s vocals drop out and an intricate bass groove takes their place. For the outro, the refrain returns as a distorted echo, roaring over the beat like the whistle of an approaching train. Stream the track below.
Britpop as a whole is due on May 10th via New Alias, arriving as a 24-song project encompassing three different chapters: Past, Present, and Future. Inspired by the time he spent in the Montana hometown of his girlfriend,...

Beyoncé is coming for that Number One spot.
On Wednesday, the star released two new offerings of her single “Texas Hold ‘Em” including an acapella and instrumental version. The former features her rich, layered vocals as the song builds into a lux crescendo. Like the original, both new versions were produced by Beyoncé, Nate Ferraro, and Killah B.
The 32-time Grammy winner announced her eighth studio album, Act II, during the Super Bowl last Sunday. The LP serves as the second installment of her three-part Renaissance project, and is due March 29. That same day,...

The 2024 Grammy Awards showed Beyoncé in a new light as the “Texas Hold ’Em” singer went cowboy core. Born in Houston, the 42-year-old pivoted from her usual leg-baring bodysuits and elegant dresses to a skirt suit and Stetson cowboy hat.
Since debuting her full country-chic look at the Grammys, Beyoncé has released two new singles with Western touches involving banjos, violins, and a more traditional two-step beat. Then, the “16 Carriages” singer started attending New York Fashion Week.

Robert Randolph was tooling around Florida when the call came. The musician, whose sacred steel slide guitar has powered his own Family Band albums and has popped up on records by Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Thomas, Santana, and Dave Matthews Band, was behind the wheel when his office phoned to tell him that Beyoncé wanted him to record with her.
“I said, ‘Record what — you sure you have the right person?’” Randolph recalls, noting his own jam-band style. “I’m the kind who plays and plays and plays on.

Beyoncé sent her fans a shocker on Super Bowl Sunday, using a Verizon ad to announce “Renaissance Act II” and drop two brand-new country songs. But members of the BeyHive with a penchant for half-hour comedies got a two-for-one deal, as the pop star appeared in the commercial opposite an unexpected partner: “Veep” and “Arrested Development” star Tony Hale.
Hale has spent years of his career playing awkward, offbeat beta males overshadowed by powerful women: “It’s a forte of mine,” he says, reflecting on what his newest collaborator may have in common with Lucille Bluth and Selina Meyer. He felt at home at Yoncé’s side, though, he isn’t totally sure how much she knew about him in return. “We really didn’t have much time to chat,” he laughs. “I didn’t ask her, ‘Have you seen my work?'”

Update: Nielsen has updated their estimate, reporting that Super Bowl Lviii reached 123.7 million viewers, up from the initial count of 123.4 million.
The Feb. 11 Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers brought in an average of 123.4 million viewers — the highest number of people watching the same broadcast in the history of television.
112 million of those viewers were tuned into the CBS broadcast — the largest audience ever for a single network. The rest were measured across Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports and NFL digital properties including NFL+. Per Paramount Global, Paramount+ saw record-breaking viewership that made Sunday the most-streamed Super Bowl ever, but exact data regarding streaming views isn’t available.
Before this, the biggest telecast of all time was last year’s Super Bowl game between the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. It was initially named the third most-watched, ranking behind the 2015 and 2017 Super Bowls...

Taylor Swift announced her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” when she won Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys. But Beyonce was like, “Hold my beer,” and revealed during the Super Bowl that she would be dropping new music. Beyonce’s “Act II,” her follow-up to “Renaissance,” is slated for March 29, after which “Tortured Poets” comes on April 19. Perhaps surprisingly, that makes this the first time in 15 years that the two superstars will have competing eras at the Grammys. Will Swift win Album of the Year for the fifth time, or will Beyonce finally win for the first time? Or might they both be overtaken by another artist?
Of course, I must preface this by saying that neither album is out yet, so whether they’ll even be any good has yet to be determined. But considering their creative and commercial consistency over the years, let’s for the...

Bust out the blue sequins, polish up your roller skates, and start sending those congratulatory gifts to Taylor Swift. As the country participated in the gratuitous orgy of capitalism otherwise known as Super Bowl Lviii, the real ones know that even though the Chiefs came out on top in a down-to-the-wire overtime win over the 49ers, the bona fide highlights of every Super Bowl Sunday are those super spots. Judging by motifs of the past, some years the commercials are downright weird, while in other eras the bulk focused on heart-wrenching sentimentality.

The Verizon ad found her at a lemonade stand (a nod to her 2016 album of the same name), following several playful takes on her name: “Barbey,” a nod to Barbie, and “Botus,” saying she’d be the first female president.

In the history of the GDMAs thus far, Swift is the only artist who has won Artist of the Year. She’s also the only artist who has won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The Grammys are presented every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music insiders from across the industry. For years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by secret nomination review committees, but the academy eliminated almost all of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large without an intermediary to override their choices. Saoirse Ronan was knee-deep in lamb goo on the first day of filming “The Outrun,” a searing look at addiction that premiered on Friday at the Sundance Film Festival.
Adapted from Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, “The Outrun” centers on Rona, a recovering alcoholic who returns home to the Orkney Islands in Scotland after spending a hard-living decade in London. Eager to escape the temptations of her former life, she helps out on her father’s sheep farm, where she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty.
“I delivered seven lambs,” she said proudly at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “That was very terrifying. I didn’t know if I was going to kill the lamb as I was pulling ’em out.”

Barbie remains the biggest Hollywood success story of the past year. A union between a beloved Mattel toy brand and the director of Little Women and Lady Bird, there’s a reason star and producer Margot Robbie pitched the combination as comparable to Steven Spielberg and dinosaurs. What you have here is a subject matter that generations of audiences grew up on and an auteur director bringing it to life in a fresh and exciting way. In 2019, Warner Bros. saw Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s vision, much to the studio’s reward four years later.
However, there was a time when such a pitch wouldn’t have been accepted, no matter who the director was. In fact, Sharon Stone revealed in a recent social media post that she could not even get studio executives to entertain the basic idea of a Barbie movie during the 1990s.

Nestled amid a tale of hardship and torment, “Keep It Movin'” is a bright spot in the newly released adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Just as sisters Nettie and Celie (Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) are about to be torn from one another, they find a brief moment of respite and optimism as they sing to one another on the beach. “Nothing’s gonna take you down, oh / Just let it go / Life can never break your soul,” sings Nettie, instilling a feeling of hope that flickers and wanes in Celie as the film endures.
As one of the few original songs included in director Blitz Bazawule’s revival of “The Color Purple,” “Keep It Movin'” has already emerged as a focal point for the movie, which earned the second-biggest Christmas Day opening in history following its release on Dec. 25.
