Emojis. Playmobil. Lego. Brands seem to be here to stay in movies. Ryan looks at its rise and rise...
On paper, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl probably shouldn’t have been a hit. Earlier movies based on Disney’s theme park rides certainly hadn’t been a success - least of all The Country Bears, a family film released a year before Pirates and largely shunned by audiences. Disney boss Michael Eisner moaned at Pirates’ steep $140m bill. Did it have to be so expensive? And could Johnny Depp - hardly known as a bankable star - really lead the movie to box office glory?
The answer was a resounding yes; released in the summer of 2003, Pirates Of The Caribbean made over $650m worldwide. Pirates also appeared to break two curses in one blow: first, it proved that adventure movies set on the...

The Lego Movie Video Game is out now on iOS devices.
The game can be downloaded from the iOS App Store for £3.99. It is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Our Lego Movie Videogame review: Falls short of awesome
The iOS version features more than 90 characters, including Batman, Superman, the Green Ninja, Gandalf and Benny.
It contains 45 levels based in locations such as Flatbush Gulch and Cloud Cuckoo Land, and utilises a new animation style used in the film.
Customers will need 2.2Gb of available space to download the game directly to their device, or 1.1Gb if synced via computer.
It was recently revealed that The Lego Movie 2 will be set four years after the first film.
The original movie missed out on an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature when the list was announced earlier this month.

Before The Lego Movie could hit theaters last Friday, some assembly was required.
Correction: A lot of assembly.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s incredibly entertaining “block”buster is a hyperkinetic Frankenfilm, cobbled together from a variety of sources both huge (the classic “hero’s journey” monomyth) and teeny (does a certain dolphin noise sound familiar?). The movie is also filled with casting in-jokes, snippets of dialogue borrowed from other movies, and callbacks to the directors’ past work. All in all, it’s enough to make your head spin, Lego minifigure-style — there’s no way for one person to catch...

Alexa here. Our local multiplex conveniently exits right next to a Lego store. So, our weekend plans were pretty much set: see the movie my daughter has been begging for since seeing the trailer months ago, then buy the related merchandise. I will admit that I was all too happy to help her build her Cloud Cuckoo Land palace after soaking in the glorious amalgam that was the movie. But, in search of some alternative merchandise, I've picked these possibly trademark-infringing goodies for sale that celebrate the film as well. They are, as is everything, awesome! (Mark Mothersbaugh ate my brain.)

Everyone’s favorite interlocking plastic building toy has finally been transformed into a big 3D animated feature—and the result is a popcorn-devouring, nostalgia-sparking crowd-pleaser that should be a mega-hit for Warner Bros. The Lego Movie centers on Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), a nice but undistinguished construction worker/Lego figure who’s happy following instruction manuals for his job and spending his off hours buying comically expensive coffee, watching his favorite TV show ‘Where’s My Pants’, and singing along to “Everything Is Awesome”, the oddly catchy tune that keeps his fellow citizens of Bricksburg in line. The city is run by the tyrannical President Business (Will Ferrell), who wants to freeze the Lego universe by releasing the ‘Kraggel’ (a tube of superglue). When Emmet stumbles across a plastic block known as the ‘Piece of Resistance’, he’s designated as ‘The Special’ – the one chosen to reunite the great...

"Everything is awesome!" goes the official theme song to "The Lego Movie," and while critics will eventually decide if that's actually the case, it's hard to deny that spirit that's powering the Warner Bros. flick. Even though the entire movie is built around one of the most popular toys of all time, there's a weird innocent sweetness permeating from "The Lego Movie," which is certainly a nice change from the usual crass commercialism these kinds of movies project. Indeed, the voice cast is filled with people we like — Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Will Ferrell — and the concept is pretty smart, with the adventure taking a regular Lego on an adventure through all the Lego lands including Pirates Cove, Knights Club, Vikings Landing and Cloud Cuckoo Land. The brand doesn't seem too precious to not make jokes at its own expense, so yeah, this really could be...
