I'll be darned! Salman Khan can act!!
moviesaremypassion24 July 2004
You have to get through the first half of the movie (with the awful hair, nasty attitude, and scared girl) to appreciate the second half, for it's in the second half that Salman Khan proves he can act.

And I must confess, this was a pleasant surprise! I'm used to Salman Khan playing men you love to hate (or is it just him?) He always seems to be looking for an excuse to take off his shirt. But in the second half of Tere Naam, his character's pain is palpable, and you genuinely care what happens.

Now, let's hope Salman Khan will begin to get more mature scripts, so he can show his acting skills all through a movie.

The female lead (Bhumika)does a very good job of playing the shy, obiedient girl.

All in all, 7 out of 10. Worth seeing.

Tere Naam
asaf_hussain12325 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this movie because it has a different storyline...The movie deserves to be appreciated by the audience..Tere Naam is about a guy who revolves in fighting with other gang member..

The movie tells a story about Salman who likes to show off and hang around with his friends, although he has already passed his course in college, meaning he has left college, but still for no specific reason he sits on the platform with his friends..Salman's brother is fed up with Salman because of his attitude towards his enemies, and for involving in a fight for no specific reason..Salman doesn't care what his brother thinks of him, and continues to waste time by sitting on the platform with his friends..

One fine day he meets a girl called 'Nirgira' (Bhoomika Chawla)and he falls in love with her..He tells him to come here and then Salman asks her 'What course are you studying'...she replies 'BA Pass Course' ... Salman and his friends laugh ..

One day in a train Salman gets shouted by bhoomika...and she calls him a gunda..salman cannot tolerate this and cries..

One day he kidnaps bhoomika and shows his anger towards her when bhoomika gets a chance to escape but salman stops her and tries to punch/slap her..then he screams at her ...after a while they both become lovers..

After the 'Odhni' song has finished, salman is riding his motor cycle, and the motor cycle accidentally hits a jeep..Some gang members kick punch salman .. salman fights them in order to defend them and protect himself from these gang members..The action builds up, and then salman gets hit by a dagger on his head, and then they hit his head towards a part of a train which is made out of metal...he gets wounded and bruised, and then he is sent to a hospital where the doctor tells his mum and brother that he is no longer normal meaning that he can't move, listen or talk..he is then sent to a mental hospital where he is tied to the wall...The second half of this film provides a sourful and depressing mood of the person feeling the pain for both salman and bhoomika having a miserable life..

In the climax when he escapes, the background music that is running is excellent and when he gets to his destination he finds bhoomika dead..he then goes back to mental hospital where he belonged because he felt that without bhoomika he will not be able to live even with his family..

Salman performs really well, and this might be his best performance till date...Salman had the capability to play his role easily though if you compare his performance with Shahrukh's Josh then I think that Shahrukh played his role better than Salman in tere naam..

Bhoomika Chawla played her part with dedication and determination, although her performance wasn't as powerful as salman's performance..

Sachin Khedakar playing Salman's brother in the movie played his part with good dialogue delivery..

If you are looking for a movie that is different and interesting throughout then 'Tere Naam' would make you feel determined to watch this film..

One of Salman's good movies
silvan-desouza19 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Satish Kaushik has made a career remaking south films, TERE NAAM was a remake of SETHU(1999). The film was a comeback for Sallu whose career was going through bad phase and also he had a hit and run case against him in 2002 TERE NAAM was speculated as being based on Sallu and Aish real story but that is doubtful. In any ways, the film starts well, Salman's scenes with his brother and sister in law, scenes among his friends are well handled, even the love story is well handled, the twist at the interval is well handled, the only bothersome in the first half is the pace at times and too many songs the second half starts well with the outburst of Salman and the turn of events are well handled but post Salman goes to the Ashram things slow down, however the breakdown of Aslam is brilliant, the climax too is very good

Direction by Satish Kaushik is decent Music by Himesh Reshammiya is good, the title song is very good, Odhni, Tumse Milna and all songs are good, Sajid-Wajid's Lagan Lagi is decent

Salman Khan plays his part of the rogue well, he does a brilliant job in emotional scenes often considered his weak points, though not on par with Vikram in Sethu yet a great performance. Salman had gone bald those days(for his personal reason) and has 2 looks in the film. Bhumika Chawla debuted in this film, resembles Bhagyashree but does a good job Sarfaraz Khan is terrific, The other friends are good too mostly seen from Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai(remember the guy playing Hrithik) Sachin Khedekar, Savita Prabhune,Ravi Kissan and others are good too

Salman Khan totally proves his acting abilities!
seth5918 September 2005
I never took Salman seriously prior to this movie, but I was in for a big surprise. The movie is well directed and the characters are well defined, but the romance between the principle characters has been kept to a minimum. Salman Khan has done a great job with such a complex character and deserved all the awards that year. One can't imagine another actor after seeing his performance. I have turned into a loyal Salman Khan fan ever since I left the theatre. The movie has great music. Apart from him the movie has great performance by Sarfaraz Khan and Sachin Khedekar.

A must watch! Tere Naam

Salman steals the show.
AvinashPatalay20 December 2004
Happened to watch this movie when it was aired on TV.

Normally I pass off Salman as a spoilt-brat of Bollywood with no talent what-so-ever except for penchant for showing off his well-tones muscles. But Tere Naam proves otherwise, and hey guys - this dude can really act.

Salman get into the skin of the character as rebellious aimless youth who frequently gets involved in dog-fights. He meets Bhumika Chawla and immediately falls for her demure innocent nature. The rest of the movie is tale of their love and what future had in store for them.

The story is pretty good and manages to captivate the interest of the audience. A few coincidences and mishaps shown could have been done away with.

Friendship between Salman and his friends is quite natural and remind you of your bunch of friends during college/ hostel days.

Salman has done commendable job in emotional scenes which make you wonder if he was really acting or being one-self. Sachin Khedekar delivers a good performance. Bhumika Chawla suits the role to the "T" playing the girl next door hailing from higher caste.

The beliefs, life-style, the dogma and the hypocrisy of the higher caste is portrayed with substantial element of reality.

Songs are quite hummable.

The hype of being a true story of Salman-Aishwarya was just a publicity gimmick, otherwise the movie is a remake of Tamil film Sethu.

A commercial movie with tones of parallel cinema.

Best Of Salman's pieces ever
mansimakar18 December 2022
This movie is really good, the first half of the movie is salman being salman and fighting, showing his body.. But the second half is where it steals... Wasn't expecting this to be a tragidic love story and the ending was quite suprising.... Salman's acting is 7/10 Storyline is 7/10 Ending is 8/10 1st half would be 6-7/10 2nd half would be 8/10

Amazing movie overall 7/10, better than modern bollywood movies, This movie doesn't have vulgarity or abusive language to attract viewer's attention, a pure cinematic masterpiece...

Love, friendship, brotherhood, parenthood well described and showed

No saas bahu drama, pure masterpiece.. Best of salman's.

What can i say...... i am 23 years old man and i cry every time i see the movie!!!!!!
varuna1220 June 2005
What can i say, i am 23 years old man and i cry every time i see the movie!!!! I wonder every time i watch this movie that can someone love someone so much that their separation can drive one person to live like insane for the rest of his life even when hes not insane!!!

i wish i could be like that!! I wish i could love someone the way Radhe did!!!! But i also wish that no one should have to go through what Radhe went through.

People who haven't seen this movie, watch it. Don't be put be off the the initial 15 minutes, this movie is worth waiting for over 2 hours and watching it!!!

Who says Salman Khan cant act!!!!!!!???????? This movie and his performance in this movies has proved that Salman Khan is a wonderful actor. All these years, he really never had an proper opportunity to show his capabilities. In this movie he did and did it very well.

THe music in the movie is just divine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The performances of Radhe's brother and sister in law, the Muslim friend, the beggar girl, the priest and the leading actress were all outstanding. Although i myself was put off in the beginning by the low production values, which were quite obvious in the cinematography quality, i ended up crying. And a movie which can move someone like that has to be a good movie but this wasn't a good movie.................,

this was a brilliant movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent character development but incomplete story
AishFan14 September 2003
The reason that I wanted to see this was movie was a result of all the hype that this was an on-screen depiction of Aishwarya and Salman's affair. Disappointingly, only the first half can be said to be like that. The second half takes a completely unexpected turn and has no resemblance whatsoever to the love affair. As much as I hate Salman for all the crazy things he has done, I must say he acted well in this movie. I liked the different role of a complex character with an enormous ego falling in love with the submissive, traditional girl. However, this unique and perhaps even disturbing relationship was never developed. The story has a different ending, keeping the tagline in mind. The movie ends with unanswered questions and leaves you pondering over questions like "Was it meant to be like this? Why did this happen? Who is at fault? Did they deserve it?" I am not particularly a fan of such movies, especially when I am expecting a masala movie about the affair of my favorite actress. However, if you're into art movies, you might like this one.

A beautiful film with excellent songs
guptans20 June 2004
This is a kind of movie bollywood needs to make more often. Everything about this movie is just outstanding. Its an excellent story about a spoiled guy who falls in love with a very innocent girl and how this relationship changes him and their lives. This might sound like 100's of other stories out there but it isn't. This is a story for a mature and sensible people. It will touch your heart just right. Actors have done a great job too. Salman Khan has never acted this good and Bhoomika Chawla innocent face suits her role perfectly. I would really recommend everyone to watch this movie. Thanks

sad ending
steffycyril6 September 2016
I am seeing this movie after a long time.Mom has always said that it has one of the best casts. The central character is Salman Khan who transforms himself into a lover boy the moment he sees her.The way of his proposal is also very nice. The songs are evergreen with giving more importance to the point of view. As it progresses,it is more serious because of his sudden illness. But she says that she will wait for her and keeps her promise. She also goes to meet him but is very sad at seeing the place. Finally when he gains consciousness, he tries to come back but is late as she has already given her life. The story is good but the ending is sad that Weill not forget.

Awful film!
ftmslm13 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I wasted £2.49 renting this on YouTube, I lost interest as it was so bad. Both lead actors did a bad job and weren't likeable at all. The songs were awful apart from the title song and even then Salman Khan did a bad job at lip syncing.

Not sure why the wardrobe department picked that hair piece for him - it was so greasy and made him look like a creep instead of a misunderstood "bad boy", also not sure why he kept taking his top off.

The kidnapping scene was pointless and OTT - and at the end of it she asked for his forgiveness and next thing you know the happy couple are singing and dancing - cue the eye roll!

I stopped watching after that!! I think I'll stick to watching the classic Bollywood films from the 80s and 90s.

Salman is amazing!
ro-rao200710 April 2008
Boy, those who thought that Salman Khan could not act are sadly mistaken. Salman Khan is truly one of the best there are in the industry. This movie had no famous star except for Salman. Unlike other movies that require more than just one star, this movie was still a blockbuster. Salman deserved a Best actor award, not a daddy's boy like Hrithik who only gets good roles from his dad. He is far better than actors like Abhishek, the overrated Shahrukh, and Hrithik. He gave such a fierce performance. Everybody else also acted so well. It was unexpected. The movie is the best movie movie of 2003, except Koi Mil Gaya and Kal Ho Na Ho.

Tere naam is Salman's movie!
cseabhi6 July 2021
Watched it after a really long time and was suprised this movie still looks good. I remember watching this in theatre and was having no expectations from the movie. But the movie turned out to be a good one.

First half is entertaining with all the rowdy look of Salman Khan and his friends, but it's the second half where we see a rare salman khan's talent. It's completely his film and he proves himself in the movie with amazing performance.

Bhumika Chawla was decent but was completely overshadowed by Salman.

Music was top notch with almost all the songs touching your heart.

All in all a very good feature film.

MENTALLY DISASTROUS & DISTRESSING...!!
arv-303512 September 2019
The name of the film should be "GUIDE TO SELF DESTRUCTION".👈👈

It is a tragic love story of an IMMORAL (or UNETHICAL) man.

This is the BEST film ever made...which shows the CONSEQUENCES OF NOT LISTENING TO THE ADVISE OF ELDERS 😂 ... And doing everything independently... according to your own IMMATURE mind. ...As if... nobody is superior to you... and YOU NEED NOT LEARN ANYTHING FROM ANYONE...!!!

The HIGHLIGHT of the film is -->

The film maker has done a very challenging job... of showing a MORALLY INCORRECT man as a RIGHT & LEGITIMATE one...!!! ...thereby making him acceptable to the society (audience).

It is like.... Serving the poison to the Audience...by playing melodious background songs. ... And making sure... that the Audience eating the poison...is FEELING HAPPY to eat it...!!!

Believe it or not.... But it is the truth of the CONTENT of the film.

The HERO's mentality in the film shows that there is NO need of any rules ( DO's & DON'Ts ) ... in the society. ....and Anything can be done by anyone. ....and Nobody should be answerable to anyone in the society.

Just do whatever you like..!!

Throughout the film, the hero NEVER LISTENS to anybody.... Even his own family members and friends are worthless for him....till the end..!!

He is shown as ALWAYS READY TO FIGHT with BOTH his enemy and even his OWN FRIENDS 👎 👎

The Hero USES his family.... as a means of fulfilling his "DRINKING & SMOKING" Needs.

And he takes support of his friends.... to show his power and influence in the LOCALITY.

Whatever he believes and thinks...is the ONLY THING that matters in the whole film. The Hero is CLEVERLY portrayed by the film maker as -- "ALWAYS RIGHT" in the movie.👎 👎 👎 ....and his every NON SENSE act and deed is GLORIFIED by melodious background tunes and songs.

The "HERO" of the film shows that it is perfectly normal if you roam around all the day like a Street-dog with your friends...without doing any work. ....And it is also OK if you feel NO RESPONSIBILITY towards your parents, your work, even your own self...!!

This film shows that -- If you don't get the BOY or GIRL of your choice, then --- You should either Kill Yourself (COMMIT SUICIDE). As the heroine did in the film.

.....Or you should CONSCIOUSLY go to a mental asylum and spend there the rest of your life INSPITE OF KNOWING THAT YOU ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL !!! As the hero did in the film.

It is difficult to understand whether the lead actor is playing the role of a HERO or a VILLIAN....!!! Because in the end....he ultimately does everything WRONG with himself...!!

The film gives a VERY TOUCHING LESSON that --->

When a person gets ILLUSIONED by the storm of UNCONTROLLED DESIRES arising in his mind... then the person --- ---forgets his/her own primary care ---loses emotional and mental balance ---throws away all the MORAL VALUES into the Dust-bin ---and starts doing the things which leads him/ her towards SELF DESTRUCTION.

In other words, when SELF DEVELOPMENT leaves behind all the MORAL VALUES....... and goes hand-in-hand with UNCONTROLLED DESIRES ....... then it leads to SELF DESTRUCTION.

But the film justifies the hero's and heroine's every nonsense & irresponsible act ....by playing melodious background tunes and songs..... and showing that EVERYTHING IS FAIR IN LOVE ... (even self-destruction).👎 👎

THE MAIN THING that makes this (MORALLY RUBBISH) film a 'HIT'.... is that the film maker has successfully been able to SHOW & GLORIFY... the hero's every " MORALLY WRONG ACT" .... as the "RIGHT & LEGITIMATE" one.

Another thing making the film a "HIT" is the songs.

We MUST REMEMBER that -->

1. Self care is NOT Selfish. 2. Self destruction is NOT Love. 3. Self development is our FOREMOST DUTY. 4. MORAL VALUES is not something which is possessed by the fools.... But it is the JEWEL OF THE GENTLEMEN.

My all time Favourite Movie
ruchironline21 May 2006
No doubt this is a great Movie. in these three years, i have seen it hundred times and most often or not i have wept. forget movie even the song tere naam is reflecting so much pain that i just cant control my tears every time i hear it. salmaan has depicted the pain of a separated/lost lover to a unbelievably true level. the things he tries to woo the girl are not filmy. they are real. the dialogues are very simple and true . in fact i wont even called them dialogues, they are real conversion ..The first time i saw this movie i was stunned. i would definitely rate this as salmaans best performance . and request everybody to go and watch it in a hall if they can... wonder if a sequel could be made ... Hats off to sallu bhai!!!

Salman Khan as Radhe Mohan: A Wonderful Welcome Back.
wasiimjunggee21 September 2011
A Good Welcome Back for Salman Khan...!!! After his recent flops in 2002, Salman proved to an average success in 2003 with Tere Naam. Though it was a average movie, it covered huge terms of a complete action, romance & drama. Salman's character as an obsessed lover proved a successful one. Tere Naam has a mixed motion casting since Sarfaraz Khan,Sachin Khedkar,Mahendra Verma & the college goons was brilliant in acting.Salman Khan & Bhoomika's screen chemistry was excellent. Music,Lyrics & choreography was well acclaimed since Sajid-Wajid & Himesh Reshammiya back after 3yrs.Direction By Satish Kaushik was critically acclaiming, story was an average one since its storyline has some weakness points Screenplays & Dialogues was well set.The Fight were simple & Salman's Hair Look worked accordingly to the scenes. The fact is that the second half of the film went a little slow thus ending in an awful climax.Where Salman had a narrow escape in the asylum after Nirjira's death he was completely shattered & the ward boy came to pick him up.The Climax was poor since Mahendra Verma (the villain) did not appear after banging Salman Head in the quarter scenes hence, he should have getting beaten despite Salman's bad state with the help of his friends. The Villainous part was not well observed. "Unfortunately a True Love Story" the theme finally applied at beginning of the film. I gave 6.2/10 citing the above statement with relatively good performance since Salman Khan was nominated for the Best Actor performance In 2004.

Beautiful moving movie
dawntreader25 August 2003
This movie is about what love can do to you: drive you crazy, drive you mad, drive you to change your life around.

I had never been a big Salman Kahn fan, but this movie definitely proves he can act.

The movie revolves around the effect a priest's daughter has on the local thug around town.

There are some really beautiful moments, the best being towards the end of the film. The music is wonderful and Udit's beautiful voice is haunting, especially in the song Tere Naam (Sad).

Definitely check this movie out. You won't be disappointed.

Wow!
MovieInspector31 December 2010
This film tells one of the best love stories of the decade, and it is great just because of the story. I'll start off with the performances.

Salman Khan is awesome; his role in this movie is perfect for him. He, as others have said, proves his acting ability to any doubters. He actually proved it in his debut role in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) for which he won filmfare best male debut and was nominated at the same time for filmfare best actor. The film introduces Bhoomika Chawla who gives a solid performance in this movie - so solid that one would be surprised that she didn't achieve more after this film. Actors in supporting roles also did a great job in making this a great film.

The film's music is great; hats off to Himesh Reshammiya. I can't say which are the best tracks because they're all good.

Verdict: don't miss this one; they don't make films like this anymore. I give it 9.5/10

i feel like i'm taking crazy pills
atariq9 November 2005
i don't understand how other people say this is a good movie, nor how it was possibly nominated for any awards. This movie is horrible. Salman (at 38) plays an unsympathetic college age kid who loves getting in fights, and there is a running subplot and rivalry with a rival college (again in their 30s) age crew, that serves little to further the story except for one pivotal moment.

The fighting is choreographed poorly and added simply to give fights to the movie. The same can be said of the songs. Songs can sometimes further a movie's purpose, but these do not do that at all. In fact, they are almost thrown in willy nilly and could be readily interchanged one for another.

Much brouhaha is made of Salman's "acting" in the second portion of this film. You will find that it is not so much acting as it is the usual award ploy of playing a difficult character. Furthermore, there is no progression, nor is there development. Much is made of suffering which is over the top and unnecessary. Of course, the newcomer actress was so insignificant I can not even remember her name. She does not hold weight, but this movie is a vehicle for Salman, not her. There are no bright points in this movie. I rarely write, and certainly not for middling films. I felt like I had to make a comment about just how bad this movie is.

Satish Kaushik has a niche, and this is not it. He is really far too melodramatic and behind the times. Even this movie feels like it was filmed over a long period of time, and he didn't really get the transitions down. The pacing and plot development aren't there, and the only true milestones are marked verbally and obviously by characters secondary to the plot who extol the virtues of Salman's character because they would not be obvious to others. Satish Kaushik should not be allowed to direct another movie for some period of time, until he focuses on developing a movie fully and the characters. Or he should just stick to his comedy.

Salman's Show
hellisotherpeople22 October 2004
Warning: Spoilers
After being put off by Salman's hair in promos,i delayed watching this movie for almost a year!! What a mistake..

Tere Naam was certainly one of the most enjoyable movies of recent times.. and I have gone from a Salman hater to Salman tolerator..

SPOILERS.....

What an unexpectedly amazing performance. Salman's portrayal of an emotionally tormented lover was without a doubt his best work thus far. There are certain scenes where his desperation, pain and helplessness is almost palpable. He certainly seems to have tapped into some hitherto unseen reserves of acting talent to come up with his performance. Or maybe he just channeled the demons from his personal life.

And the hair, ah the hair.. I actually liked it ( after I got over the initial annoyance). I think it is gutsy of Salman to actually look THAT different from his usual chocolate boy looks. It fit in with his rebellious, good for nothing character.

Bhoomika was a perfect foil for Salman. I could totally buy why Salman's character would fall for her.Her innocence and freshness is very appealing. The lead players had GREAT on screen chemistry.

I think the friendship shown between Salman's group of friends was very real too.. nothing saccharine about it.

I loved the story /screenplay and direction. Definitely different.

Add in the awesome soundtrack, all in all, 3 hours well spent.

An effort gone waste
freddiejason31 August 2003
Another effort in hindi cinema goes waste solely due to one bad choice. Namely, Salmaan Khan. Role of Radhey was the best role Salmaan could ever have gotten his hands on. He would have made it an award winning performance, only if he had tried to forget that he is Salmaan. It doesn't look like he even watched the original movie. People are praising Salmaan only because it looks like he has performed better than what he has done in other movies. I am sorry, I did not see anything different. Same incoherent way of speaking with unnecessary movement of hands, same dance moves, same old habit of throwing his shirt off without any reason!!!

In the good things, Bhumika chawla didn't have much to do but look sweet and innocent, which she does. Actually Salmaan also looks good with his trendsetting hairstyle(hairpiece). Music and songs are good. Specially Oh Jaana, in which Shaan,KK and Kamaal Khan have been used for chorus!!! Title song was good too.

Mahima was totally wasted. Normally if you get a special appearance for an item number, you focus on the person appearing but in this case the whole focus was on Salmaan. Who picked Mahima anyway? She is a good actress but dance, hmm I don't think so.

Satish Kaushik's direction was good. Although one of these days, he should make a movie which is not a remake of any South Indian movie. Story of the movie was okay. Overall, it was a good movie to watch once but hey Salmaan, please don't bother to make space on your shelf for an award. 7/10

Worst date move ever?
dpmarrotte30 June 2007
Salman is impressive in an out of character performance, but this might be the most depressing Hindi film I've ever seen. Makes Veer-Zaara seem absolutely jovial. However, it is definitely worth viewing, the songs are excellent, great cinematography and a powerful performance by Salman Khan. 8 out of 10

On the DVD case, under the title, it states, "Unfortunately based on a true-story" but at the end of the movie the typical disclaimer appears stating, "all of the depicted events are fictitious and not based on any real person living or dead etceteraÂ…. . . .
