Life’s a Breeze

Greed is an interesting thing, one of the seven deadly sins which sometimes brings out the very worst in people. Money is a very attractive motivator and in desperate times, can turn good-natured individuals into devious scoundrels. The Irish dramedy Life’s a Breeze does focus on greed and the unfortunate effect it has on family but it does it in a way that is light and at times, rather farcical. It is a film about family, first and foremost, and how something as material as money can either bring the family together or tear it apart.
Nan (Fionnula Flannagan) is an aging woman living by her lonesome in gritty part of Dublin, Ireland. Her family consists of oddball slackers who mean well but end up irritating Nan to no end. The “leader” of the clan is...

No wonder the NFL is looking to bring a team back to Los Angeles — in football TV ratings, the size of the teams’ TV markets does matter. Take last night’s Philadelphia Eagles-Chicago Bears 54-11 blowout in a face-off between the home teams of the No.3 and No.4 markets in the country. Despite the game posting the most lopsided outcome so far this season, with the Eagles taking a 21-point lead after the first quarter, the game still managed a 12.5 rating in the metered-market households from 8:30 Pm-11:15 Pm — up 15% from last week’s game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, representing TV markets No. 23 and 34. NBC is projected to win the night in 18-49 and total viewers. The halo effect from the success of NBC’s The Sound Of Music live staging is spreading to the 1965 movie. Last night’s rebroadcast on ABC drew 6.5 million viewers and...

No offense to Orlando Bloom, but I knew absolutely nothing about his upcoming The Good Doctor until Apple dropped a trailer onto its site. A 2011 holdover, it stars Bloom as an emotionally stunted physician whose practice takes a turn when he meets a young patient (Riley Keough) with a kidney infection. You know, why don.t I just let he trailer do the talking: $sb("ci030_1155773fab849aed1d0d0d35329ca1fb",{"sbFeed":{"partnerId":39,"type":"video","contentId":491255,"cname":"cinemablend"},"style":{"width":480,"height":270}}); google.load("ima", "1"); .You.re a good doctor,. the wounded, pretty Keough says. .You.re a good patient,. Bloom.s Dr. Martin Blake answers. And with that, the buildig blocks of an unhealthy obsession have been laid. Lance Daly (Last Days in Dublin, The Halo Effect) directs The Good Doctor, which looks ...

ABC’s Shark Tank (1.8/6 among adults 18-49) jumped 20% from last week to post an all-time Friday high last night. It also tied CBS’ Blue Bloods as the top program of the night in 18-49. The halo effect carried over to 9 Pm where ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? (1.5/4) was up a tenth. But at 10 Pm, 20/20 (1.4/4) dropped the ball, literally, shedding 18% from last week and costing ABC the top demo spot for the night. ABC (1.5/5, 5.2 million) was edged by CBS (1.6/5, 10.3 million) in 18-49, with the eye network as usual in full control of the total viewer race. CBS’s A Gifted Man (1.22, 8.8 million) ended its Friday 8 Pm run with a whimper, once again tying its series low. The freshman drama moves to the Friday 9 Pm slot next week where it will finish its abbreviated first season. CSI: NY (1.7/5, 10.3 million) and Blue Bloods (1.8/5, 11.8 million) were both up a tenth in the demo from last week.

Updated: Launching in the Sunday 8 Pm slot once occupied by The Wonderful World Of Disney, ABC’s fairytale drama Once Upon A Time got off to a great start last night, pulling in a 3.9 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 and 12.8 million viewers against NFL football on NBC and the World Series on Fox. This is ABC’s highest-rated new series premiere this fall and the season’s No. 1 drama debut in 18-49 on any network. Once Upon A Time more than doubled last week’s delivery of its predecessor in the time slot, reality veteran Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (1.9/5). It also more than doubled its lead-in last night, America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.5/4), which was flat with last week. The big opening for Once Upon A Time helped veteran Desperate Housewives (3.0/7) post a 11% week-to-week increase for its best demo number this season since the premiere. The halo effect didn’t stretch to 10 Pm,...

We continue our examination of the business book The Innovator's Dilemma with an interview of author Clayton Christensen. Why was the book successful, and what technologies will be disruptive this decade?
What was the impetus for you to write The Innovator's Dilemma?
While building the company that I founded with several MIT professors, I just noticed all around me that companies that were led by people a lot smarter than me were being blown out of the water by entrants. I could not blame stupidity. There had to be a better explanation. So I left the company to become a doctoral student, so I could study it.
Why do you think the book was so successful and resonated with the business world?
In many ways I was lucky. It was published in 1997, just as the Internet was getting traction. It helped people frame what the Internet could do. Had the...

The note was practically a high "A-sharp"; the cacophony of voices blended perfectly to form an instantly recognizable tone, striking the right balance of volume and shrill while conveying contagious enthusiasm. There were big smiles, hearty applause and a collective pat on the back. Only this chorus wasn't singing on the set of "Glee"; it was 16 cheering department heads seated around a conference table at the Los Angeles offices of 20th Century Fox Television, the studio that produces the hit Fox show. Piped in via video: another eight team members from Columbia Records in New York.Welcome to the "Gleekly meeting," a pep rally during which the many tentacles that tend to the nearly half-billion-dollar brand convene to discuss the latest strategies for what has become the network's No. 2 priority. Averaging 14 million viewers this season, "Glee" still trails "American Idol" by a good 10 million, but it's inching closer to the juggernaut with each passing day.

Shane Curry, Kelly O'Neill Anyone who's ever visited Dublin as a tourist is no stranger to the Gaelic magic and charm that linger around every corner. In Irish director Lance Daly's (The Halo Effect) latest feature Kisses, his two preteen protagonists, Dylan (Shane Curry) and Kylie (Kelly O'Neill) - escaping horrific homelives in the suburbs - enter the city with all the wonder and optimism that freedom (and a few Euros in your pocket) can bring. However, as they make their precarious way through the hopeless search for Dylan's older brother - who followed a similar path two years earlier - their situation becomes grimmer and grimmer, and you come to your senses and realize that, no matter how charming, any city is a dangerous place for 11-year-olds on their own. The two young actors - both making their feature debuts - are a revelation. It seems strange to talk about chemistry between tweens,...

A year after Obama swept into office on the promise of change, some experts are still waiting for results.

On this day last year, millions of Americans huddled on a crisp winter day near the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., to watch Barack Obama's historic inauguration. The nation's first black president encouraged the multitudes to unite in hope against what he called the "gathering clouds and raging storms" of economic despair and war.
"We gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord," he said in a speech that summarized the parallel messages of the bitterly contested 2008 election season: hope and change.
