We first got to know Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a child star, through his many commercials, such feature films as Angels In The Outfield, and most notably his TV appearances, including a six-season stint as alien Tommy on Third Rock From The Sun.
He left acting for a few years to attend college, and he came back with a renewed vigor, focusing on gritty independent films and character studies. His role in 2004′s Mysterious Skin as a gay prostitute completely redefined his career, and is one of the great performances of the last decade.
Joseph has maintained an eclectic career, appearing in beloved indies Latter Days and 500 Days Of Summer (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination), and big-budget fare G.I. Joe and The Dark Knight Rises. Last year he wrote, directed, and starred in the well-received Don Jon.

Jacqueline Bisset vs. the Golden Globes 2014 get-lost orchestra NBC or whoever organized the Golden Globes 2014 ceremony sat Jacqueline Bisset way in the back of the awards ceremony ballroom. Never mind the fact that Bisset’s film career began nearly half a century ago and that she was a Golden Globe nominee in the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category for the mini-series Dancing on the Edge. As a result, it took Bisset, who seemed about as surprised as everybody else when her named was called up, more than a minute to reach the stage. (Photo: Jacqueline Bisset accepts her Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television © HFPA.) Visibly moved, Bisset had to wait a few more seconds before she was able to talk. By the time she began with her somewhat rambling acceptance speech,...

Great news, gay cinephiles! LogoTV snapped up a compelling catalog of gay movies and has made them available for free online streaming! (Sorry international folks, we only have U.S. distribution rights, so like so much else these days, these are geo-blocked.)
Now these are small indie films, so while they all have gay storylines and most feature cute male casts, not all of them are cinematic gems. But hey, on the whole they don’t suck!
Some of them are actually pretty good. In fact, we count five that made our reader ranked list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies: Eating Out 2 (#85), Adam & Steve (#79), Eating Out (#56), Boy Culture (#36) and Latter Days (#5).
In Latter Days a young and promiscuous gay man sets his sights on seducing his Mormon missionary neighbor. The resulting affair changes both their lives. The film stars Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss and also has Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a supporting role.

This just can't be the end. How can a show so full of heart, so full of sweetness and love and humor not be embraced by everyone? It escapes me.
If this is it, though, if this is the last time we get to see Bryan and David and Goldie and Shania and Jane and Rocky and Clay, then let me take a moment to thank the writers, the cast and the network for giving us an entire season of this fantastic show.
Finding Name-o
We begin with our boys facing off against the host of wedding decisions that need to be made. Bryan, the producer, wants things to be elegant. David, the lovable geek, wants things to be fun. Trust me, folks, fun is the way to go. Pomp and circumstance may seem spectacular on paper, but it won't be a wedding people will remember.

After it’s appearance at Fantasia and FrightFest earlier this year, it has been announced that Artsploitation Films has acquired distribution rights to Hidden in the Woods:
“Los Angeles, CA– Artsploitation Films is pleased to announce the acquisitions of a new Horror film Hidden In The Woods at the recently concluded Ventana Sur Film Market in Buenos Aires. Ray Murray, President of Artsploitation Films said about the film: “Hidden In The Woods is quite a different film than those we’ve previously acquired: it is a pure, deliciously gruesome horror film that, while incredibly violent, has in its heart a tale of survival against all odds. We are excited to be able to present this film to adventurous American audiences.”

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Christian Bale, The Dark Knight Rises The Dark Knight Rises will have more IMAX footage than any other Hollywood movie in history. As per a Wall Street Journal report, Christopher Nolan’s third and last installment in his Batman trilogy will offer more than one hour of scenes filmed with those cumbersome IMAX cameras. For comparison’s sake, The Dark Knight, the biggest 2008 blockbuster at the domestic box office, had 40 minutes of IMAX footage. But what’s the big IMAX deal? After all, movies such as Tim Burton / Johnny Depp / Mia Wasikowska’s Alice in Wonderland, James Cameron / Sam Worthington’s Avatar, Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Josh Hutcherson’s The Hunger Games, and Bill Condon / Robert Pattinson / Kristen Stewart’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 were all shown on IMAX screens. And upcoming IMAX releases include Joss Whedon / Chris Evans / Chris Hemsworth’s The Avengers, Ridley Scott / Noomi Rapace / Michael Fassbender’s Prometheus,...

Tom Hardy, The Dark Knight Rises Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight Rises got a nice plug when six minutes of footage premiered before IMAX screenings of Paramount’s Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. (One could also say that MI4 got a boost from the Tdkr footage as well.) On May 4, The Dark Knight Rises trailer 3 will premiere before screenings of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, a Marvel production to be released by Walt Disney Studios. But Batman is a DC comics character, how could that be? Well, good business sense. That’s it. And remember, as MTV.com explains, back in 2008 The Dark Knight trailer was shown before Marvel’s Iron Man. And it gets better for fanboys, fangirls, and fanseniors: the new The Amazing Spider-Man trailer will also be screened before The Avengers. The rebooted Spider-Man has been much less buzzed about than either The Avengers, which...

Tom Cullen and Chris New spend the weekend together in Andrew Haigh's Weekend Writer-director Andrew Haigh's gay love story Weekend scored the highest per-theater average this weekend (Sept. 23-25) at the North American box office according to Box Office Mojo. Screening at one New York City theater, the Sundance Selects-distributed Weekend — which, by the way, has nothing to do with Jean-Luc Godard's 1967 film of the same name — grossed an estimated $25,200. For the mathematically challenged: $25,200 at one theater equals a $25,200 per-theater average. Featuring Tom Cullen and Chris New as two gay men who during a seemingly long weekend discover that a one-night stand has metamorphosed into something more profound, the British-made Weekend has been greeted by overwhelmingly positive reviews. Haigh's movie, in fact, has a 96% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' critics, with Salon's Andrew O'Hehir calling it "one of the bravest, most honest and most accomplished stories of...

Academy Award-winning documentarian Errol Morris is known for fearlessly tackling controversy in his films, from Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. which famously chronicles the Forrest Gump-like story of a befuddled but well-meaning Holocaust denier, to Standard Operating Procedure which gives a voice to arguably the world’s most notorious Ugly American, Us Army reservist Lynndie England. With his latest doc, Tabloid, Morris gleefully indulges in frivolity, digging beneath the headlines of a sex-soaked scandal starring an American beauty queen that rocked the United Kingdom in the 1970s…and the results are shocking.
This demented doc centers on Joyce McKinney, a self-proclaimed “incurable romantic” and former Miss Wyoming who became a media sensation after her former lover, Mormon missionary Kirk Anderson, publicly accused her of chloroforming him, kidnapping him, and chaining him to a bed to rape him repeatedly in an ill-conceived attempt...

What's in a kiss? According to Wikipedia:
The kiss is an importanct expression of love and erotic emotions. Christopher Nyrop describes the kiss of love as an "exultant message of the longing of love, love eternally young, the burning prayer of hot desire, which is born on the lovers' lips, and 'rises,' as Charles Fuster has said, 'up to the blue sky from the green plains,' like a tender, trembling thank-offering." He adds, that the love kiss, "rich in promise, bestows an intoxicating feeling of infinite happiness, courage, and youth, and therefore surpasses all other earthly joys in sublimity.
What they said. Actually, "tender, trembling, thank-offering" is just about perfect. Kissing is a vulnerable act, even more so when we're kissing someone for the first time, as a test of mutual romantic interest.

Continuing the Reader Appreciation Series, here's a conversation with John (pictured left) from Boston. He's been reading the site ever since it launched and hearing that warms the cockles of my heart. Loyalty is definite top ten top three material as character traits go, don't you think?
Nathaniel: Do you remember your first movie?
John: I think my first movie was Cinderella. I was so frightened of the evil stepmother that we had to leave early. When I was young, every movie scared me. I didn’t sleep for years after E.T. (yet somehow/somewhere I became obsessed with this medium).
First movie obsession?
Probably Clue. I remember renting it when I was home from school with chicken pox in fifth grade. I probably watched it 10 times in one weekend. It is so campy, but so utterly entertaining. …and what a cast!!! Eileen Brennan as Mrs. Peacock and Madeline Kahn as Mrs.

I'm 5' 9'' and 130 lbs, and more than one person has referred to me as a "twink" (a word which I find to be derogatory and demeaning). What confuses me is that my instinct to be chased by Blaine does not follow with him dominating me, but the complete opposite. I am always attracted to the most butch, athletic, tall, hyper-masculine guys around me because I want to ravish them. Is that weird?...

Well, It Was That Kind Of Best.Gay.Week.Ever!
I have to confess that when I sat down to write last week's Bgwe! column, it was a little hard to focus on the "Best" part of the equation. What with all of the news about gay teen suicides along with the usual doses of homophobia and asshattery, it was hard to be in a good mood. But I managed to avoid being unduly negative and focused on the good stuff.
But at least it seemed like there were some actual positive changes coming out of the terrible tragedies of Tyler Clementi and the other gay teens we've lost recently. Unfortunately, we then we learned about the horrific beating and torture of three gay men in New York. And that was followed by this horrible video (actually filmed four years ago) of the New York Yankee fans known as the...

A few weeks ago we asked readers to submit up to five of their favorite movies in our third annual favorite gay film poll. We wanted to see which older gay films have timeless appeal and which recent gay films you judged important enough to register in the rankings.
After voting closed we sorted through the nearly 15,000 nominations (representing over 500 individual titles) to identify your top fifty favorite gay films.
Tabulating this data is actually a bit harder than it sounds. For instance, do you know how many different ways our readers can type/abbreviate "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?" We counted about a dozen!
But we're not complaining, because the list that resulted this year is actually rather interesting.
Nine new films made their way into the rankings, and five of these are of very recent vintage. This represents a strong showing for current queer cinema.

Subject: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 29-year old American actor
Date of Assessment: July 16, 2010
Positive Buzzwords: Diversity, initiative, everyman
Negative Buzzwords: Child star, pothead, G.I. Joe
The Case: Finally, here's a much welcome (if temporary) break in our chain of negative assessments. After all, going against the trend is an act that's wholeheartedly encouraged by our current subject, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (hereinafter known as "Jgl"), who has overcome the Hollywood odds in a huge way. Not only has he navigated a successful move from television to movies, but he's also conquered the former-child-star stigma (not to mention losing that awful hair) too. And as audiences have all-too-commonly observed, most child actors greet professional rejection by burying themselves within a circle of enablers before ceremoniously commencing a downward spiral of entitlement and hard drug use. Not the case where Jgl is concerned.
Instead, Jgl has bucked the trend by consistently working since the age of seven.

MattCanada here with a bit of an overview and Best-Of Gay films for the last decade.
Gay cinema over the last ten years has been intrinsically tied to both the political gains made by gay activists and the intense battles surrounding everything from the worldwide fight for gay marriage to nationally specific issues like America's Dadt and Doma, and Britain's repeal of Section 28. The relationship between the political and the cinematic is always most pronounced in the medium's relationship to minority groups and their texts.
The Aughts have seen gay-rights become the most visible"social values" issue in America, and this has been reflected in a number of high profile American films dealing frankly, sexually, and politically with what it means to be gay in America. Milk, Far From Heaven, and Mysterious Skin employ gay filmmaking traditions, like those of Affirmation Documentaries (Richard Dyer's term), Sirkian melodrama, and New Queer Cinema,...

Peter Paige has signed on to direct the indie drama "Sex Crime Panic" for Funny Boy Films.
David A. Lee and Daniel Vaillancourt adapted the screenplay from Neil Miller's book "Sex-Crime Panic: A Journey to the Paranoid Heart of the 1950s." The film will explore the sordid true history of the hysteria that led to the incarceration of a group of men in a mental hospital for being gay.
Funny Boy's Kirkland Tibbels is producing with Paige and his Blazing Elm producing partner Bradley Bredeweg. Sterling Zinsmeyer is an executive producer.
George Bendele, who brought the project to Funny Boy, will co-produce along with the company's Greg Copeland and Darryl Anderle. Shooting is set to begin in mid-2010.
" 'Sex Crime Panic' recounts an important part of our history," Tibbels said. "Most people have no idea the extent to which thousands of men were rounded up, arrested and thrown into prison or insane asylums for being gay."
Paige adds: "We're thinking of this film in the vein of 'Capote,' 'Milk' and 'Girl, Interrupted.' It's an intense, dramatic exploration of a dark period in our history."
Paige and Bredeweg are repped by CAA and Anonymous Content. Single Cell Pictures optioned their screenplay "Repeat After Me," and the pair created the CW series "Fly Girls,"...

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged!
Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst gay film ever made? Why? – A.R.
A: A couple of months ago, I wrote a list of what I considered to be the ten most “important” gay male films – not what I felt were the “best,” mind you, but the ones that I felt had had the most impact either on the Glbt community or society at large.

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).
There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.
This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!
How does this list compare to our previous poll?...

Q: Years ago, I read about the gay kiss between Topher Grace and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in an episode of That ‘70s Show called "Eric's Buddy." Apparently that kiss had some kind of historical significance, like first primetime kiss between two men or something like that? Could you find out what the significance was, if any? – Mark, Johnson City, Tn
A: Okay, this is too weird! Just last week, I was at a party, talking to Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem, the creators of the great new show Nurse Jackie (and who both happen to be lesbians). At one point, one of them mentioned a “gay episode” on the first season of That ‘70s Show, a show they’d worked on previously. I didn’t remember seeing it, but I thought it...

I’ve been thinking about sexuality a lot lately, which is different than thinking about sex, but not by much.
Why are most men the way they are about sex — and so different from most women? Are gay men different from straight men? And what does the internet have to do with it?
Interesting questions, no? Even if they're not, the subject of "Male Sexuality" gives me an excuse to write about sex in this week’s edition of the Best.Gay.Week.Ever!
How Sexual Are You?
In order to get in the mood, let’s begin with a brief quiz, shall we? (Fyi, the quiz program won't let me use "dirty" words — words like "sex".)

Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Kirk Ellis has signed on to script the movie Escape, which will star Katherine Heigl. The movie will be a break from the rom-coms with which the Grey’s Anatomy star has been making her celluloid name, given that it’s a drama based on real-life events about a wife who escapes from a polygamous marriage in which she’s been held against her will.Carolyn Jessop and her eight children managed to get away from the forced marriage and the Fundamentalist Church Of Jesus Christ Of The Latter Day Saints, and went on to write a book about her ordeal. That book will be adapted by Ellis, who won an Emmy recently for his work on the HBO mini-series, John Adams. The Fundamentalist Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Days Saints (rolls off the tongue that one), is a much frowned-upon polygamous off-shoot of the Mormon...
