Count on the Telluride Film Festival to deliver a surprise or two. Going in, buzz on Joe Wright’s Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour” had already reached a dull roar — and folks were prepared to be impressed by Annette Bening in “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” and Angelina Jolie’s Cambodia movie, “First They Killed My Father.”
But the movie that is building momentum as it hits Toronto, the one that A24 yet again will take all the way to Best Picture contention that could win a few Oscars (as “Moonlight” did last year), is Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird.”

Some people who like the movie well enough are saying it’s a small coming-of-age movie in an all-too-familiar high school setting.

No subjective “best” list here, this one is based on stats. As the 21st century turns 16, we’ve got the 25 biggest-grossing domestic blockbusters to date.
Check the stunning list below, which is unlike any previous period in movie business history. (We’re using adjusted totals to account for changing ticket prices. Box Office Mojo’s top 200 all-time adjusted list is here.) Here’s what we learned by doing the numbers:
The 21st Century Has Delivered Many of the Biggest Hits in History
25 of the 100 all-time biggest-grossing films have come from the first 16 years of this century. 1984 to 2000, the era that perfected the modern blockbuster and mass release of movies, brought 17. So the 21st century has been an era of major hits.
But oddly, the first current-century films on the all-time-grossers list places #11: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” And “Avatar” is #14. (This is where adjusting becomes essential — unadjusted, the ten...

It’s not enough to love films, we now must enumerate that love or hate relative to any similar films.
It has become a familiar ritual — the latest release in a franchise or a noted director’s canon spawns more than one site to run a “The Films of ___________, Ranked” article. We’ve done this dance with the Marvel movies since At Least 2012 when The Avengers came out, and no doubt someone is at this very moment preparing a ranking of the 14 previous films in the McU to accompany the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Wonder Woman will likely spur on a ranking of all the DC Films, and we saw just in the past week where everyone stood on the existing Fast & Furious movies.
And yes, I got into the act with my own “The Films of Assistant Director Frank Capra III, Ranked.” Hopefully the point was made.

In the odd Thursday episode of The Voice, Adam Levine decided to give himself a little time-out rather than risk getting his heart broken once again by a contestant rejecting his offer to join his team. And it was around that time that I started wondering if I didn’t need a time-out, too, since it seemed like, every singer or two, I had a new favorite. I mean, how fickle can one person be? Or does that happen to everybody who watches? (Reassurances welcome.)

Acclaimed UK director Alan Parker discussed his career during a masterclass at the European Film Forum in Brussels last Friday [Dec 2].
Parker was in typically lively form as he looked back over a career that saw him direct 14 features, many of which were box office hits. The veteran filmmaker confirmed that he is now fully retired, with no intention to direct any further films.

2016 was anything but normal, which actually makes the usual roundup of unique celebrity baby names somewhat comforting!

Thanksgiving is a time to spend with your family watching football and stuffing your face with turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. It could also be a time that you watch classic television shows focused on the holiday. One of the series that depicted Thanksgiving the greatest is the NBC sitcom Friends, which ran for ten glorious seasons from 1994-2004. Each year, the series would air a Thanksgiving episode with the entire gang feasting on anything from Funyuns to trifle accidentally made with beef. Sometimes, the gang would have a special guest, like in Season 8, when Brad Pitt guest starred as

Looking back now – three decades later – it’s hard to believe that the idea of an archaeologist as The go-to film hero was, oftentimes, a guarantee to bring in the punters and create a big-money blockbuster movie! Indiana Jones, Romancing the Stone, King Solomon’s Mines, etc. all graced the big screen to varying degrees of success during the mid-80s; and yes, it was Spielberg’s film that reignited the genre but it took Cannon Films – the purveyors of low-budget, high-concept big screen bonanzas – to really put the fun into this now-buried treasure of a genre.
After hitting it big with King Solomon’s Mines, they milked the classic character for another big-budget (at least for Cannon) movie before the flash-in-the-pan adventurer genre faded.

Back in 2010, Shadowlocked ran a piece entitled The lost film that accompanied The Empire Strikes Back. It was an excerpt from an in-depth with the short film's writer/director/producer Roger Christian, conducted by our Founding Editor Martin Anderson, and discussing the interesting behind-the-scenes story of the for-a-long-time-lost-but-not-forgotten fantasy short film Black Angel.
Not to be confused with James Cameron's TV series Dark Angel, or Joss Whedon's TV series Angel, Roger Christian's 25-minute short film Black Angel preceded Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, before the print was destroyed and the film thought lost to the world. In recent years, however, another print has been discovered, and now it's been made available for free on YouTube until the end of May.

Part I: The Lawrence Bureau
T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) ranks among the 20th Century’s oddest heroes. This short, smart, and mischievous British soldier helped organize the Arab Revolt against Turkey, a secondary front of the First World War. He became Emir Feisal’s trusted ally, painfully conscious that the Allies wouldn’t honor promises of independence. After the Paris Peace Conference, Lawrence retreated into the Royal Air Force and Tank Corps as a private soldier, T.E. Shaw.
Lawrence lived a curious double life, befriending both private soldiers and notables like Winston Churchill and George Bernard Shaw. He wrote memoirs and translated Homer while repairing boats and seaplanes. His intellect, warmth, and puckish humor masked internal torment – guilt for failing to secure Arab freedom, regret for two brothers killed in the war, shame over an incident where Turkish soldiers sexually assaulted him.

Adieu au langage - Goodbye to Language

Introduction
From its bluntly political opening (Alfredo Bandelli's 'La caccia alle streghe': "Always united we win, long live the revolution!") to its hilarious fecal humor and word play—with 3D staging that happily puts to shame James Cameron and every other hack who's tried their hand at it these past several years—Adieu au langage overwhelms us with a deluge of recited texts, music and images, hardly ever bothering to slow down to let us catch our breath. Exhilarating and certainly not surprising—this is the guy who made Puissance de la parole after all!
The release of a new Godard film or video means a new encounter with texts, films and music often familiar from the filmmaker's earlier work—reworked and re-contextualized—as well as new discoveries to be sorted through and identified. This life-long interest in quotation...

Sopranos creator David Chase fielded questions about the show – and offered some ambiguous answers to questions about its ambiguous finale – this week at the Museum of Moving Image in Queens, New York, IndieWire reports. Following screenings of both the series' pilot and finale (the only two episodes that Chase both wrote and directed), the producer revealed that the first episode could have been its own feature film if HBO didn't pick up the series. As for the finale, which ends (spoiler!) by cutting to black, obscuring the fates of the characters,...

When I was growing up on the Jersey Shore, mere miles from the 1916 shark attacks that Peter Benchley used as inspiration for his best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws had a profound effect on my summers. Whenever I was alone in the water, I inevitably began to fear that I was being stalked by something beneath the surface. The panic would grow and grow — as John Williams’ daaa-dum music grew louder in my head — until I finally felt compelled to make a break for it. Swimming for my life, my flailing arms furiously pounded the water and my lungs felt...

Star Wars was a movie once. This is a basic fact that we all know. It was a single film released in theaters: A story with a beginning (kind of), a middle, and an end (kind of). There was a relatively small cast, composed of up-and-comers, unknowns, and one well-regarded British actor overdelivering on what looked to him like thin material. The film, released in theaters in 1977, had a simple story. There was a MacGuffin (The Death Star Plans!) and there was a Rescue Mission (Help Me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Hope!) and there was a Final Battle.

More than two decades later, and we still can’t look at a cup of water the same.
Just as the rippling water in that now iconic scene signaled the T. rex’s grand entrance, so did Jurassic Park usher in a new era of cinematic innovation. Making a reality of so many childhood dreams, it marries moviemaking wizardry and emotional complexity to electrifying effect. Park also straddles a number of genres (action-adventure, family, thriller, and sci-fi, to name a few) on top of its ready-made merchandising and theme-park ride potential, ultimately offering something for everyone. There’s before The Dark Knight, and there’s after The Dark Knight. Before The Dark Knight, superhero movies were big for Hollywood and Christopher Nolan was a culty stylist and everyone loved Batman. After The Dark Knight, superhero movies were the defining Hollywood product and Christopher Nolan was everyone’s favorite Hollywood director and everyone really loved Batman.
You can try to explain The Dark Knight’s success by looking at the underlying factors of where we were at at the time — “we” as a nation, “we” as a global moviegoing public, “we” as a geekifying popular culture. A brutal election year faced America.

In 2014, it’s difficult to appreciate the awe felt by uninitiated audiences who saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in theaters in 1981. Think about the film’s opening scenes, which introduce Indiana Jones and his now-iconic fedora in the jungles of South America. He narrowly avoids getting shot in the back by his mutinous guides, proves his Zorro-esque expertise with a whip, cleverly maneuvers through the deadly booby-traps of an ancient Peruvian temple, flicks away tarantulas like they’re gnats, nabs the prized golden idol but sets off a chain-reaction of destruction that includes a giant boulder chasing him back out into the sunlight,...

There were movie aliens before E.T., and there were movie aliens after E.T., but none were as memorable (or weirdly adorable) as Steven Spielberg’s 1982 creation.
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial told the story of a young boy who discovers an extra-terrestrial — often referred to as a goblin before they find out its true origins — and forms a loving, brotherly relationship with it as he struggles with his parents’ recent separation. Between the amazing child acting in the film (more on that later), the wonders of an animatronic alien with facial expressions as real as mine or yours, and the tear-inspiring story,...

The Terminator came out in 1984. Terminator 2: Judgment Day arrived seven years later. In the interim, Arnold Schwarzenegger became a new kind of action megastar, headlining a string of era-defining beefcake blockbusters. Commando, Predator, The Running Man, and Total Recall: The very titles echo down through history, dripping with gunsmoke and bicep sweat. But that era was coming to an end. The ’80s were over. Always a savvy operator, Schwarzenegger was already planning his pivot: Twins and Kindergarten Cop offered a kinder, gentler Arnold. (He loves kids! He loves De Vito!)
And so the essential twist that led to...

Maverick has a problem: Too. Much. Awesome.
Maverick isn’t just a pilot. He’s the best pilot there ever was or ever will be. He’s not the best of the best: He’s the best of the best…of the best. But his superiors can’t handle Maverick. He flies the way he wants to fly — awesomely. His superiors try to teach him the value of teamwork or whatever. The super-hot lady instructor with the boy’s name tries to heal him using totally sweet neon-lighted lovemaking, and also by getting him to deal with his emotionally distant father.

In the post-Lady in the Water era, it’s tough to remember how bonkers people once went for The Sixth Sense. But a mere millennium ago, M. Night Shyamalan’s atmospheric thriller was the toast of audiences and critics alike — a box office smash, a cultural touchstone, a freakin’ Best Picture nominee. Not only at the MTV Movie Awards, but also at the Oscars!
How did a simple, potentially gimmicky ghost story capture our hearts and minds so fully? Easy: because despite the shadow hindsight casts upon it, The Sixth Sense is a great movie. Its brief 107-minute run...

On Wednesday the Top 9 had to pretend they were at the forefront of a band. (Which they are anyway, every week, at least if they wanna be!) The task was much easier said than done for a lot of ‘em. Meanwhile, Harry Connick Jr. ran up onstage to steal Ryan Seacrest’s shoe and shared a giant purple gummy bear (seriously? at least get red) with Jennifer Lopez. Later, she swore, but the five-second delay zapped it out of existence. Was it an s-bomb or an f-bomb or another rendition of “I Luh Ya Papi”? We’ll never know. Anyway,...

Nudity has long been one of the biggest talking points surrounding HBO's Girls, so it came as no surprise that it took a prominent position in Lena Dunham's debut as host of Saturday Night Live. "There is an old saying: If you're nervous about giving a speech, just imagine the audience naked," the 27-year-old writer/director/actress said during her opening monologue. "Or at least imagine that they haven't seen you naked." The monologue progressed into a series of cringingly intimate sexual disclosures from castmembers and offered Dunham an...

"All inappropriate materials have now been withdrawn," a statement from Bim Distribuzione said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "We are very proud of the film and regret any distraction this incident may have caused." The decision follows scrutiny on social media that claimed the distributor's marketing materials were guilty of racism.

Tonight, a certain Celebrity Apprentice-winning comedian will revive his early-’90s syndicated late-night talk show, The Arsenio Hall Show. Should we warm him up by asking him a few Stupid Questions? Hall, yes!
Entertainment Weekly: If the ’90s version of you time-traveled to the present to be a guest on your show, what’s the first thing you’d say to yourself, after all the fist-pumping and woof-woofing died down?
Arsenio Hall: “A lot less hair and shoulder pads, my friend!”
Bill Clinton played sax on your show in what would prove to be a historic politics-as-entertainment moment.

Special effects master on fantasy films including Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans
In 1933, the 13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at the cinema and was hooked – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre "stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done." It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen, who has died aged 92, was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. He created the special effects for fantasy films such as The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958); Jason and the Argonauts (1963), with its famous army of skeletons; and Clash of the Titans (1981).

We thought our expectations were appropriately adjusted when we opened the ratings spreadsheet this morning.
We knew the return of NBC’s Smash on Tuesday wasn’t going to have nearly as big of an audience as the musical drama’s debut last year. The show’s first season premiere aired after The Voice and received heavy promotion during the network’s telecast of the Super Bowl the day before. We also knew that NBC has been struggling lately with some soft numbers, which tends to reduce the likelihood of any telecast doing well.
But yikes!

The latest James Bond flick, "Skyfall," is back at No. 1 this weekend, after dipping below "Breaking Dawn" last week. Raking in $11 million in its fifth week in theaters. "Skyfall" has broken a Sony record previously held by Tobey Maguire's "Spider-Man 3," becoming the distributor's highest-grossing movie with $918 million in worldwide tickets sales.
The only significant new offering of the weekend was "Playing for Keeps," starring Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel. The film was a certifiable flop, grossing only an estimated $6 million despite pervasive marketing.
The romantic comedy, which also stars Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid, stars Butler as a washed-up soccer star who tries to make amends with his family by coaching his kid's little league. It's Butler's second flop of the season, as his surfing drama "Chasing Mavericks" also failed to draw an audience.
The full Top 12 is below, with the weekend gross followed by the total gross for the film.

What was your favorite scene from the pilot?
Carissa: I don't know why I love it so much, but the way Sherlock says two when he picks up the second glass bottom from the kitchen of the crime scene. It shows where his character is going to go and it's snarky and fun.
Jim: I really enjoyed Watson and Holmes on the roof as Holmes explained nobody with two alarms loves their job. It's so true yet nobody every says it!
Amanda: My favorite scene would have to be the closing.
