- Aditya (Vivek Oberoi) and his friends are searching for Aditya's wife Suhani (Rani Mukherji). She has been missing for hours, a few days after having a fight with Aditya, due to their failing marriage. But Aditya now realizes that he loves her more than anything and is devastated that he can't find her.
The film goes into a flashback, where it is seen that Aditya and Suhani meet each other at a wedding. Aditya immediately falls in love with her and pursues her. Suhani lives with her dad Chandraprakash (Sharat Saxena), mother Shobhana (Tanuja Samarth) and sister Dina (Sandhya Mridul). Aditya lives his parents Om (Satish Shah) and Shanti (Swaroop Sampat). Aditya sees Suhani in a local train one day and starts tracking her. He eventually finds where she lives.
Suhani at first believes that he is simply flirting with her but later, both realize that they love each other. Aditya invites Suhani to his home for a marriage function and tells everybody that she is the girl that he is going to marry one day. Om is surprised to know that Aditya has decided to marry without his knowledge of consent. However, Aditya's rich lifestyle and Suhani's middle-class lifestyle creates a rift between their parents. Shobhana is very angry with Suhani since she believes that the family had made a lot of sacrifices for her medical education. Aditya sends his parents to Suhani's house to ask for her hand in marriage. Things start on the wrong foot between Om and Chandraprakash as the difference in the status of the 2 families is evident. Dani is the elder one and Om comments that maybe Chandraprakash is waiting for a family where he doesn't have to pay dowry. Chandraprakash refuses to get his daughter in Om's house.
After staying apart for a few weeks Suhani and Aditya realize that they both love each other. Aditya and Suhani elope and get married in a small ceremony. At first, they live in their respective homes and keep their marriage a secret. However, when a proposal comes for Dina, the truth comes out. The prospective in-laws ask for Suhani's hand for their younger son, and she refuses. When her parents insist, she blurts out the truth. Suhani's parents ask her to leave their house. Chandraprakash throws Suhani's luggage out of the house and slaps Aditya when he meets him. Aditya and Suhani then move to a dilapidated house and start their married life together.
Soon, marital problems threaten to drive them apart. Aditya and Suhani are very different people, and things change between them after they have got married and started living together. Both deal with the frustrations of their careers, and Suhani says that Aditya doesn't do any of the romantic gestures that he used to earlier. Chandraprakash is admitted to hospital for jaundice. Shobhana and Dina meet Suhani on her regular train and inform her. Suhani wants to go see him, but Aditya refuses. Due to this fight, Suhani delays her visit by a day. By the time Aditya agrees and they go together, Chandraprakash had died. Shobhana refuses to let Suhani enter the house. A misunderstanding causes Suhani to think Aditya is having an affair and they get into a major argument. Aditya was helping Dina meet the guy who had come to see her when the issue with Suhani flared up. The matchmaking worked as Dina and the guy started dating. Aditya was hugging Dina when she was remembering her father, and Suhani saw Aditya, but she didn't see that it was Dina that he was hugging.
Suahni then meets Dina and realizes Aditya was meeting Dina. She is delirious with happiness and rushes to meet Aditya. Suhani then gets involved in a car accident. As she is crossing the street, a car hits her, almost fatally injuring her. Aditya has no idea of this and waits for her to return home, happily thinking that they will patch up. Meanwhile, Suhani is in the hospital, on the verge of death.
The film returns to the present, where Aditya has realized that Suhani is missing and is frantically looking for her. It is revealed that Savitri (Tabu) is the one who hit Suhani with her car. Scared to own up, Savitri calls her husband, who is an IAS officer. Savitri does not even have a driving license. Her husband, Yeshwant Rao (Shah Rukh Khan), arrives at the hospital and tells the doctor that Suhani is his wife, and he wants her operated. Aditya finds out about the incident and reaches the hospital. Suhani falls into a coma. Yeshwant explains to Aditya and takes the blame and tells him that he had caused the accident. Aditya threatens Yeshwant and leaves. Savitri meets Aditya and tells him that it was she who caused the accident and she is feeling guilty.
The two shed tears together, until Yeshwant comes and picks her up. Soon, Suhani regains consciousness. Aditya runs in and expresses the pain and suffering he went through in the hours of separation. Suhani also expresses her own love and feelings for him. The film ends as Aditya and Suhani finally make up and hug each other on the hospital bed.
