Five years ago today, the world lost Mac Miller at 26. Five years ago Wednesday, I lost my brother Christian at 21. In 2018, I worked for another outlet, and I learned about Mac passing while checking Slack in an attempt to briefly take my mind off the motorcycle accident that took my brother. But I was just inundated with more death.
At the time I pondered writing about whatever symmetry I could think of to get my mind off things. My brother was a rapper like Mac. They were both way too young.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

Warner Bros. Television Group and HBO have inked a new, first-look deal with producer Stephanie Allain and her production company, Homegrown Pictures.

Under the terms of the agreement, Allain and her Homegrown Pictures team, which includes Director of Development Gabrielle Ebron, will develop original scripted programming. Warner Bros. Television will produce the projects for HBO and HBO Max, external streaming services, cable and broadcast.

The awards season ended with a bang as Hollywood celebrated Lulu Wang’s The Farewell winning Best Feature and Zhao Shuzhen nabbing Best Supporting Actress at the Independent Spirit Awards while Bong Joon-ho’s peachy dark comedy masterpiece about social class made history at the Academy Awards, becoming the first non-English speaking film to win Best Picture. The South Korean film also made strides, winning Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. The huge wins for The Farewell and Parasite were benchmarks for Asians and Asian Americans, but just a week prior, Birds of Prey was released in theaters. On the surface, the Warner Bros. pic may seem like an action-packed, candy-coated mind trip of comic book movie, but the movie is a nuanced touchstone of Asian American representation — and even though it focuses on Harley Quinn’s narrative, the story would be nothing without Cassandra Cain,...

There are many talented women directors working--if not often enough--in Hollywood today. Top of the pack is writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood, who broke out of UCLA winning prizes, writing and directing shorts and television (HBO's "Disappearing Acts"), and delivering a well-reviewed Sundance hit for New Line Cinema, "Love & Basketball" (2000), starring Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan, which scored Prince-Bythewood an Indie Spirit award and a Humanitas prize and grossed $27.4 million domestic. After producing 2003's "Biker Boyz," Prince-Bythewood followed up with Fox Searchlight's 2008 literary crowdpleaser "The Secret Life of Bees," starring Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah, which played better for audiences ($37.7 million domestic) than critics. It's been another long stretch until "Beyond the Lights" (November 14, 2014), which played to raves in Toronto and Urbanworld, and earned a...

It happened one fateful evening in New York back in 2009. Both Metallica and Lou Reed were on hand for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts, and after crossing paths back stage, realized they wanted to make more music together. "Lulu" is the resultant album that chance encounter yielded.
Reed asked Metallica, the exalted rulers of heavy metal, to help him provide a soundtrack to his theatrical piece of the same name. Last May, the two musical forces came together to create ten eclectic songs that sound like nothing you've heard from Metallica before.
But Metallica are no strangers to collaboration. In fact, the band -- and its members -- have teamed up with some other unlikely (and other, likely) collaborations in their past. Here's a look back at five Metallica musical pairings you may not have known about.
And don't forget to check back at 10am Est Saturday on IFC.

The Quick Teaser Trailer has premiered. Jo Beom-goo‘s Quick (2011) teaser trailer stars Lee Min-ki, Kang Ye-won, Kim In-kwon, Ko Chang-seok, Yoon Je-moon, and Jo Kyeong-hyeon. Quick‘s plot synopsis: “A former motorcycle gang member, Ki-su, makes a living as a bike messenger. One day after making a delivery to an office building, he witnesses the building blow up. Never suspecting he could have anything to do with the bomb, he moves onto his next job—which is escorting a girl group singer, A-rom, to a TV station. A-rom, it turns out, is an ex-girlfriend from his biker days, and she’s none too thrilled to see him either. As she puts a proffered helmet on her head, a timer mechanism is triggered and a countdown clock appears. Ki-su gets a call from a stranger telling him that the helmet is booby-trapped and will blow up if he fails to...

I should preface this article by saying that I own both “Torque” and “Biker Boyz” on DVD. Is that bad? It probably is. Regardless of my wonky taste in cinema, I still think that the big-budget South Korean actioner “Quick” is going to be a blast. If this 30-second teaser is any indication of things to come, you can expect more of the following: fast motorcycles, a metric ton of explosions, mind-blowing stunt work, and tiny skirts blowing in the wind. It’s pretty badass, especially if you own “Torque” and “Biker Boyz” on DVD. Heh. Fast And Furious 5: Rio Heist is the fifth instalment in the long running Fast & Furious franchise. The first film came out in 2001 and kick started a bit of a genre revival. Biker Boyz anyone? The usual suspects are all present and correct. Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) and Dom Toretto's (Vin Diesel) uneasy friendship being one of the main focus points of the films. Uneasy because O'Connor used to be a cop and also because he's now dating Dom's little sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). And of course the stars of the film, the cars.
The set up is quite simple. Not having seen Fast & Furious Parts 3 and 4, it's safe to assume that Dom was arrested at the end of the last one.The prison bus kind of gave that away. Obviously the best course of action is to bust him out of his imminent incarceration. If you aren't laughing within the first five minutes,...

Kill Speed
Stars: Andrew Keegan, Brandon Quinn, Nick Carter, Natalia Cigliuti, Goldberg, Robert Patrick, Greg Gunberg, Reno Wilson | Written and Directed by Kim Bass
A trio of young cocky pilots make their fortune running crystal meth across the Mexican border into California in their high-speed 300mph private planes, a fortune which helps pay for a rockstar Hollywood lifestyle of high-rolling, girls and party after party. Caught in between the cops and the crooks, the flyboys must run their craziest mission yet.

Some monsters never die!
Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures Entertainment is involved in bringing a new version of the Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the big screen.
Little is known yet, except the film will be a contemporary version of the classic tale and a scriptwriter by the name of Craig Fernandez, who wrote 2003’s Biker Boyz (a different kind of horror film), originally pitched the project to the studio too.
It’s always interesting to both learn that those old, much-loved horror archetypes are returning, and to eventually see how modern cinemagoers respond. Some are huge crowd-pleasers, despite the lack of reverence towards the character’s history (the Twilight series), while others fail to find much of an audience, despite delivering a fresh take on the material (one which comes to mind, is the underrated Jack Nicholson 1993 feature, Wolf).

Countless versions of the iconic monster movie Frankenstein have hit the big screen from time to time, and while recent projects have looked at peculiar twists on the classic story, Sony is looking to simply update it. Deadline reports former studio co-president Matt Tolmach who left his post to become a producer has crafted a deal to acquire a pitch for a new take on Frankenstein. Only described as a contemporary version of Mary Shelly's novel, the idea comes from writer Craig Fernandez. While his work on films like Biker Boyz and From Prada to Nada don't inspire much hope, he also recently scripted the indie Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell. Though the writer seems to have a couple smudges on his resume, sometimes you have to swim in shit to get the gold (that's trademarked). Alex quite enjoyed Everything Must Go at the Toronto International Film Festival,...

With the new tv show Undercovers premiering next month, starring the already oft-mentioned Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who I know best at Freema Agyeman’s (#1 on my ‘Wifey List’) sister on Dr. Who, and pretty-boy extraordinaire Boris Kodjoe, I thought I’d focus on what seems to be, in a good way, a proliferation of Black men on tv shows lately. Although these guys are supporting characters, they’re playing some pretty intense roles and putting forth some great comedic and dramatic performances. Though none of these are network shows like Undercovers, they are often better (and sometimes better performing) than those.

Hugh Jackman'S portrayal of Wolverine has become popular with many fans for the character's distinctive leather jackets.
Jackman plays the metal-clawed mutant in the previous X-Men trilogy and in current release X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he wears another variation on the character's classic biker jacket.
Replicas of the jackets have become a must-have for many viewers. Last year, I reported how one enthusiast had created an online store selling the jackets when he finally found a quality duplicate of the version worn by Jackman on screen.
The website, Logan's Closet, is now offering a replica of the jacket seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, at a price of $600 to $760 depending on size. The site also sells the jackets worn by Wolverine in the first X-Men film and in X-Men: The Last Stand, as well as the jackets worn in Terminator, House, Bangkok Dangerous, I Am Legend, Biker Boyz and Mystery Men.

There aren’t many ways you can spin a story told a million times before. Whether the story of Biggie is worth telling or not was quickly rendered irrelevant when Notorious director George Tillman, Jr decided to administer a straightforward and pedestrian structure in retelling the slain rapper’s life. Nevermind that the genre it operates in, the musical biopic, is already formulaic to begin with; Biggie’s rise towards a rap career was in itself hardly unique—nor was it that compelling of a story. A kid from a broken family, motivated by the beguiling smell of money, injects himself into a life of crime while nursing his rap prowess as a hobby. After a quick stint in the slammer, the remorseful kid leaves the gangsta life behind to embrace a gangsta rap life instead. He joins a budding record label and uses his talent to procure fame and fortune.
