In a bid to up their game in the Spanish and international arena, Barcelona-based companies Mediacrest and A Contracorriente Films have forged a strategic alliance that will have the latter distribute Mediacrest films and series as well as co-produce a selection of titles with the fast-growing producer.
Said Adolfo Blanco, CEO of A Contracorriente Films: “For A Contracorriente, the deal is an opportunity to collaborate with a first-rate team and to be able to offer its clients and partners a number of films and series designed to reach the general public.”
“By participating in the genesis of the projects, we will be better able to tailor the right model for each of them,” he added.

Spain’s fast-growing TV production company Mediacrest is joining forces with Wanda Vision, one of the country’s top arthouse distributors-producers, on docu-filmmaker Gerardo Olivares’ project “Lonely Man.”
The Mediacrest-Wanda deal will see Wanda Vision’s partners José María and Miguel Morales assuming co-producers roles, handling an undisclosed part of project distribution rights.
“Lonely Man” represents Olivares’ return to the docu-fiction genre, a territory he already visited in two previous Wanda-produced projects, international sales hit “La Gran Final” and multi-prized feature “14 kilómetros.”
Both titles allowed Olivares to introduce fictional elements that helped the stories to progress within a real environment and characters.
In the case of “Lonely Man,” located in the Río Negro province in Argentina’s Patagonia, Olivares tells the story of Cándido Sandoval, a 70-year-old gaucho who lives alone in a cabin isolated from the world.

Spain’s Mediacrest, one of its fastest-rising independent TV production-distribution houses, has attached Spanish novelist Elvira Lindo to adapt Spanish novel “Nada,” one of the greatest modern classics written after Spain’s Civil War.
Lindo is joining Daniel Domenjó, Mediacrest managing director, and Alberto Macías, the company’s head of fiction, to present the drama series makeover at a Conecta Fiction panel this Wednesday, entitled Nada, the Challenge of Adapting a Literary Icon.
The title of the round table pretty well sums up the adaptation’s largest challenge. “Nada” won Spain’s Nadal Prize, one of its biggest literary awards, in 1944 when Laforet was just 23. The novel turns on Andrea, a Laforet alter-ego, who arrives at her grandmother’s house in 1939 in Barcelona to study at the university, soon after the end of the Spanish Civil War which the city lost to dictator Francisco Franco.

Tim Heidecker and Weyes Blood have released “Oh How We Drift Away,” the album closer from their upcoming collaborative project, Fear of Death.
Following the singles “Property,” “Fear of Death” and “Nothing,” “Oh How We Drift Away” fits into the rest of the album’s Bernie Taupin/Elton John writing experiment; Heidecker penned the lyrics to the track and Natalie Mering (a.k.a. Weyes Blood) set them to music. Over swooning violin and piano, Mering sings of a fading friendship: “You can come knocking/I won’t be home.

Korn have shared a hard-rock cover of Charlie Daniels’ signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” featuring Alabama rapper Yelawolf.
The track finds Korn recreating the song’s furious fiddle duel with a blaze of guitars, which adds the particularly ominous pall of heavy metal to Daniels’ classic tale. But Korn never forfeit the playfulness that defined the original, as frontman Jonathan Davis and Yelawolf embrace the roles of the Devil and Johnny and deliver the song’s story with plenty of dramatic oomph.

She’s been called “the Indiana Jones of food,” “the Mick Jagger of Mexico,” and “the grand dame of Mexican cooking.” Observing the fervor with which chef Diana Kennedy barrels down the dirt roads of Michoacán in her white Nissan pickup truck, it’s not hard to see why the sprightly 95-year-old has earned such esteemed admirers, from the likes of Alice Waters, José Andrés, and Craig Claiborne. Kennedy’s no-nonsense attitude, passionate takes on everything from sex to sustainability, and encyclopedic knowledge of regional Mexican cuisine make her a perfect documentary subject. With director Elizabeth Carroll as skilled sous-chef, “Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy”
Borrowing its title from one of her nine classic cookbooks, “Nothing Fancy” presents Kennedy’s life at an engaging but thorough pace. Born in England in 1923, Kennedy moved to Mexico in 1957 after meeting her late husband, New York Times Latin America correspondent Paul Kennedy, during a military coup in Port-au-Prince.

After months of buzz and colorful, evocative singles unspooling diasporic disillusionment and the burdens of womanhood, Polaris Prize-winning artist Lido Pimienta has finally unleashed her long-awaited third full-length, Miss Colombia. Describing the album as a series of cynical love letters to her native Colombia, the Toronto-based singer-songwriter contrasts her somber emotions with resonant steel drums, fluttering woodwinds and electro-infused rhythms drawing from reggaeton, cumbia and porro, a Colombian folk genre from the Caribbean coast.

Jauregui reunited with Tainy, who produced her new single. On “Lento,” which translates to “Slowly,” the 23-year-old encourages just that in the face of a negative lover. “I don’t need to be bothered/By your negativity/Don’t even bother,” she sings on the second verse. The song is an alluring, mid-tempo dance moment from Jauregui that shows off her smoky vocals.

Ronan Farrow has announced on social media he is cutting ties with Hachette, the publisher behind his high profile 2019 book “Catch and Kill.” Hachette imprint Grand Central Publishing announced this week it had picked up distribution rights to Woody Allen’s memoir “Apropos of Nothing” and would be releasing it in the U.S. on April 7. Ronan Farrow’s sister, Dylan, has accused Woody Allen of molesting her when she was a child. Dylan’s allegation against Allen resurfaced during the height of the #MeToo movement. Ronan Farrow says he can no longer work with Hachette “in good conscience” after they acquired Allen’s memoir while they were still working together on the release of “Catch and Kill,” which just so happens to recount Farrow’s investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s sexual abuse.

Nothing like Bts has ever happened before. The K-pop kings have taken the sound of Seoul to the top of the U.S. charts, without making any of the usual compromises—no crossover songs in English, no novelty hit, no pandering celebrity duets. Even their Halsey collabo, “Boy with Luv,” has her singing in Korean—and still reached the Top Ten last year, for their biggest stateside hit so far. They’ve managed to invade America on their own terms, filling stadiums without watering down a single detail of their sound or style.

For a show built around its central character’s obsession with music, “High Fidelity” makes some pretty generic choices. As Zoë Kravitz’s character Rob reflects on the nature of romance, she plays David Bowie’s “Modern Love”; thinking back upon the defining relationship of her life — now concluded — she hears Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” And when, in the pilot, she rocks out with her two employees at the ultra-esoteric record shop she owns, it’s to the Dexy’s Midnight Runners cheesefest “Come On Eileen.”
Maybe three Brooklynites for whom music represents not just pastime but identity could go there ironically. But many of “High Fidelity’s” song choices seem to represent an easy first thought. This works, somewhat, to broaden out “High Fidelity” — a property that began its onscreen life as the story of an obsessive played by John Cusack (also named Rob) but...

From the director of the beloved Local Hero: ‘Pure Simple Joy’ is an apt way to describe this deceptively meek, completely endearing Scottish film with a universal theme about adolescence and the reality of teen love. John Hughes’ teen pix do not hold a candle to the innocent charm found here. The gawky yet boundlessly optimistic Gregory falls head over heels for the teenaged wonder girl of his dreams… his only problem is that she’s light years ahead of him in terms of maturity. But the female social system takes on the problem in what must be the most gentle (make that Utopian) view of high school ever. Writer-director Bill Forsythe struck independent hit gold.

Here’s an easy prediction to make for 2020: As we get closer to the general election debates next fall, there will be a lot of drama around format, moderators and whether President Donald Trump will show up.
On Monday, he gave a glimpse of how he will approach the events, when he attacked the organizers yet still insisted that he will debate his Democratic opponent. It just may not be the officially sanctioned debates.
In contrast to the ongoing Democratic primary debates, which are sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee and rotated among media co-hosts, the general election debates are set up to be non-partisan. The Commission on Presidential Debates, made up of Democrats and Republicans, oversees the events, as it has since 1988. The debates have no media sponsors — they run across all broadcast, cable and streaming networks.
