Federal funding body Screen Australia confirmed its backing for a trio of Australian film projects that will now move forward into production. Director Robert Connolly (“The Dry”) is behind two of them as producer.
The funding decisions ensure that a steady stream of local films move into production, alongside the large volume of international films and TV series that are currently in Australia, taking advantage of generous incentives and good coronavirus control conditions.
Set in 1970’s Western Australia, “Kid Snow” is a drama about a washed-up Irish boxer who is offered a rematch against a man he fought 10 years ago, on a night that changed his life forever. He is faced with a chance to redeem himself when he meets a single mother and is forced to contemplate a future beyond boxing.
The film is directed by Paul Goldman (“Suburban Mayhem”) and written by John Brumpton (“Life”), Phillip Gwynne (“Australian Rules...

Queenstown, on the remote west coast of Tasmania, is known for two things: copper mining and the harsh gravel oval that is home to the local Australian rules football team. A series of deaths at the Mount Lyell mine brought operations to a standstill and put the future of the town in doubt. Thomas Hyland’s evocative film, shown here after screenings at the Unconformity festival, tracks the story of the town, the people and their football team through shock, grief and change

Documentary examines rise in injuries in rugby union and other sports that can cause brain damage in later life
Barry O'Driscoll, the former medical adviser to the International Rugby Board, is under no illusion about the defining moment of Ireland's 13-13 draw with France in March last year. The decision to allow his nephew, the multi-capped centre Brian O'Driscoll, to return to the pitch after suffering concussion was an outrage, he said.
"If that had been allowed in the United States, during an American football match, then the officials involved would have been sacked," he said.
O'Driscoll – who resigned from the Irb's medical advisory board in 2012 in protest at its handling of the issues of concussion and brain injury – was speaking in the documentary, Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis, which premiered in London last week. The American-made film focuses on what it describes as "a silent, global...

During the 2014 Critics' Choice Awards red carpet, host Aisha Tyler promises that "much like a porn film, we're fast-forwarding to the good stuff right away," in terms of hitting the jokes hard and fast.
Well, she did hit them hard and fast. But some were considerably better than others.
Tyler gets in some great cracks about critics, like how these awards are "a night for a bunch of people who absolutely hate movies telling you which movies they hated the least" and to Twitter users: "Our show is #CriticsChoice. If you see something you like, let us know. See something you hate? Whine about it like a little baby. Congratulations, you're a critic."
Aisha also had us giggling when she says, "I'm only gonna pay attention to the [actors] I'd like to sleep with ... what's up, Bruce Dern?"

Recently, Australian wrestling icon and 8x Iwa World Heavyweight Champion Mark Mercedes retired after 21 years and multiple title reigns to little or no fanfare. Which is why I have decided to write this article. Because as both a wrestling fan And an Australian this does not sit well with me considering the fanaticism about sport in my beloved country.
I love professional wrestling, have since I was but a mere young padawan living in Outback Nsw. And in 2002 I attempted to follow a dream by training within the squared circle. Unfortunately due to physical limitations (that were ironically only discovered after I began my training) my time was short lived.
But, I was there long enough to learn a lot. And to see a lot. And what I learned with my brief 12 month foray into the world of Australian professional wrestling was quite shocking to say the least. You see,...

From Nicole Kidman on a BMX to Collingwood on the big screen, our pick of the best sport films
1) Save Your Legs
There are a couple of pretty fail-safe ways to stop a conversation dead in its tracks, but one of the best is to try and convince someone that they need to go and see an Australian movie. If that Australian movie happened to be about a cricket team, it wouldn't be out of the question to suggest that your co-conversationalist might just turn and walk at pace. Which brings us to Save Your Legs, surely one of the least-loved Australian films of recent times and with no good reason; this film is actually half-decent.
It's quite admirable that an Australian filmmaker would multiply their odds of failure by making a film like this one. We're often told that cricket is the sport with the richest and most voluminous literary canon,...

Actors who get lousy reviews usually ignore them or suffer in silence- but not Kevin Harrington.
The veteran actor was so incensed by a review by News Ltd..s Leigh Paatsch of the DVD of Cliffy, he vented on Facebook.
The ABC telemovie features Harrington as Cliff Young, who became an unlikely hero at the age of 61 when he won the 875km endurance race from Sydney to Melbourne..
In Saturday.s Daily Telegraph and Herald-Sun Paatsch dismissed it as a .dreadful telemovie that turns the ripping true story of the late ultra-marathon legend Cliff Young into a crap-tastic cartoon. How the ABC ever ponied up a commitment to this dim-witted affair beggars belief..
Paatsch advised readers who want the .real tale- much of which was ignored or changed by this TV calamity,. to read Julietta Jameson.s book Cliffy: The Cliff Young Story.
His verdict: .1 star, run the other way.

The $5 million film will now be screened for distributors in the next fortnight ahead of a planned wide theatrical release next year. Gray said keeping the release date within the window between the Australian Open in January and the start of the Afl main season was crucial with executive producers and former Afl greats Glenn Archer and Sam Keckovich, and legendary actor Jack Thompson, also lined up to do "a mountain of publicity".
The film also stars Josh Helman (Animal Kingdom, The Pacific), Oliver Ackland (The Slap, Cloudstreet), Rose McIver (The Lovely Bones), Steve Bisley (Red Hill), Anna Hutchison (Wild Boys), Zoe Carides (Death In Brunswick), Bob Morley (Road Train...

Olivia Newton-John has paid tribute to Aussie Rules legend and philanthropist Jim Stynes, who passed away from cancer this week.
“I am extremely saddened to hear about the passing of my dear mate, Jim Stynes,” she wrote on Facebook. “Though we didn’t know each other long, we formed a close bond and I admired his courageous spirit and passion for life. I have never met anyone so open and so brave – he truly touched my life.”
Born in Ireland, Stynes was one of Australian Rules Football’s most celebrated players, and rose to chairman of the Melbourne Football Club in 2008. It seems hard to believe now, but back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s Espn was more of a joke network than an entertainment powerhouse. The channel, which has grown exponentially since its formation in 1979, is now home to NFL football, NBA basketball, Major League Baseball, and is the serious sports fan’s go to source for news and insight. Yet, once upon a time, the station was mostly known for showing Australian Rules Football and professional wrestling (I actually miss Australian Rules Football…). The greatest film about a TV network ever produced, Sidney Lumet's "Network," foretold the coming major media spiral into backbiting, betrayal and sensationalism. A few years later, a little regional sports network began on shoe leather and charisma in Connecticut, and as it grew into a worldwide, multi-faceted empire, controversy was never found wanting.
The rivalries, vices and abundance of secrets that were byproducts of the network's rapid rise were detailed in the tell-all oral history, "Those Guys Have All The Fun," released this year by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, and now, those backstage stories, finally exposed in print, will come to light on the big screen, too. Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is closing in on a deal to grab the film rights to the book, with Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Julie Yorn producing.

Ok, sports fans. In this time of lockouts, team bankruptcies and criminal sports stars, here's some good news: 20th Century Fox is closing in on a deal for the screen rights to 'Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of Espn,' the bestselling history of the biggest sports network in the world, which was published by Little, Brown and Company this May.
The book begins with the American success story of father and son Bill and Scott Rasmussen, who tapped into their credit cards to buy a transponder on RCA Satcom I in 1979 to show sporting events nonstop on a 24-hour station. Almost immediately, Getty Oil came onboard, and soon after the Rasmussens were forced out. Espn originally showed college football and basketball games, Australian rules football, the Canadian Football League, Davis Cup tennis, professional wrestling and boxing. Of course, it later grew...

Being one of the biggest networks in the world, like Espn, often means that people are interested in how it all started in the first place. James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales decided to write a book about such a thing, called Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of Espn, which is an oral history of the company’s rise, told through interviews with “past and present Espn personalities and producers.”
Deadline reports that the book has been picked up by 20th Century Fox, with many writers and directors said to be interested in adapting the non-fiction book into a narrative film. Julie Yorn and Trigger Street Productions’ Dana Brunetti & Michael De Luca will be producing, and it’s fitting that the latter two of them are involved; they were both producers on The Social Network, which this has been compared to. Exclusive: 20th Century Fox is closing a deal for screen rights to the oral history Espn: Those Guys Have All The Fun. The studio will develop a feature about the formation of the 24-hour sports network. The pic will be produced by Michael De Luca, Trigger Street's Dana Brunetti and Julie Yorn. The book by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales follows a format similar to Live From New York, the oral history they wrote about Saturday Night Live. Here, they use the voices of past and present Espn personalities and producers to tell the story of how a father and son maxed out their credit cards to scrape together the cash to reserve a satellite transponder so they could show sporting events nonstop on a 24-hour station. The book is a gossipy journey about how that venture turned from a 1970s joke that started with broadcasts of Australian rules football and rodeo,...

The latest sport to sweep the United States is Australian rules football which The Wall Street Journal characterizes as “a little like every sport we know in America—and unlike any one sport we know.” Although this may sound hyperbolic, or simply incorrect, your blogger recently caught the end of an Australian rules football game on late-night/early-morning television and can attest to the veracity of this characterization. Imagine rugby, football, soccer, track, basketball, and a violent variant of ultimate frisbee dressed in vertical stripes: that is Australian rules football, or “footy.” Teams of 18 players kick, hand off, and run an oblong ball in the direction of four goal posts of varying sizes that are located on each side of the field. Tackling is permitted; throwing is not.

Even before professional rugby player Nick Youngquest struck up his public friendship with his out teammate Gareth Thomas, many gay men were already aware of the very handsome Youngquest.
After all, the 26-year-old Australian has appeared in rather racy pictorials for not one, but three gay magazines – DNA in Australia, Attitude in the UK and the French magazine Têtu. And those weren’t even the first time Youngquest had stripped down, having first done so in 2006 for a charity calendar in Australia that raised funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation.
But it is Youngquest’s recent friendship with his Celtic Crusaders teammate Gareth Thomas – so humorously documented via their tweets – that has elevated Youngquest from just being a sex symbol for gay men to actually being an incredibly cool gay ally.
By showing he’s not only comfortable being admired by gay men, but in so publicly being “mates” with them,...

No, Russell Crowe is not dead. As on Thursday morning, June 10, the "Robin Hood" actor was widely reported dead after suffering a fatal fall while filming in a remote area of the Hahnenkamm mountains of Austria, his rep told Us Magazine the story was nothing but a hoax, insisting it is "not true."
Crowe's death rumor quickly spread around the internet after New York City radio station Z100 reported the fake news. However, Crowe's death hoax was another product of Fake A Fish, celeb fake news generator, which also reported that Kristen Stewart was "hospitalized after traffic altercation" in late April.
Crowe himself, during the height of the rumor, posted a message on his Twitter page, indicating that he was safe as he still talked about soccer and Australian rules football. The post read, "Have a great week in camp with the England team. All South's fans, players and admin very proud of you Headley.

No Gay. Lesbian Joke. No Gay. Gay Joke. No Gay. Ooh, Look An Actual Gay!
This week the major networks announced their fall line-ups and mid-season replacements, and overall the news wasn't great for gay characters. Ugly Betty had already been deep-sixed on ABC, and as expected, NBC axed Trauma with gay paramedic Tyler and Mercy with gay nurse Angel, while the CW dropped Melrose Place, not that what's his face got much screentime anyway. Also not unexpectedly, ABC isn't bringing back the hilarious Better Off Ted which had two out actors Jonathan Slavin and Portia de Rossi, and which was usually gay-friendly.
Of the pilots that weren't picked up, the two biggest disappointments were ABC passing on the Cheyenne Jackson/Christopher Sieber sitcom It Takes a Village and CBS not going for the drama The Quinn-tuplets, both of which featured significant gay content.
So what did the networks go for of gay interest?...

I’ve featured so many DVDs exploiting women in this feature, I figured it was time to go for the guys: Australia's sexiest pro rugby players created a minor scandal last year when they agreed to pose nude for a breast cancer charity calendar. It was national news! The lavish, provocative "Gods of Football 2009 Calendar" was an international bestseller. This DVD goes behind-the-scenes and on location as these young, Hollywood-handsome players get "Naked for a Cause" and star in some of the hottest images ever captured on film. More than three dozen sexy jocks from National Rugby League and Australian Rules teams are transformed from macho football players into nude calendar models for a day. Fly-on-the-wall camerawork captures the sizzling on-set action and many players share touching and surprisingly personal motivations for taking part. "Gods of Football: The Making of the 2009 Calendar" brings to life the stunning, iconic calendar images.
