Good news for Luke and Leia fans who can’t see “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” until punching out: the space opera’s 20-track score is now streaming online. The latest batch of compositions from five-time Oscar-winner and 50-time nominee John Williams comes with a 70-minute runtime and a track list — “Fun with Finn and Rose,” “The Rebellion Is Reborn,” “A New Alliance” — low on spoilers (but if you want them, here you go).

Netflix continues to refuse to share its ratings data, but Nielsen is moving forward with data of their own, reporting that the first Season 2 episode of awards contender “The Crown” averaged nearly 3 million viewers within the first three days of availability (December 8 to 10).
Taking all 10 episodes into account, within the first three days, “The Crown” averaged nearly 1.3 million viewers P2+ watching and close to 600,000 adults 18-49 viewers.
According to Nielsen’s Svod Content Ratings, “The Crown” skews older than some of Netflix’s other offerings and is also among the streamer’s most upscale shows. Per the ratings service, half of “The Crown” audience was over 50 — outside of the adults 18-49 demo that advertisers covet (something the ad-free Netflix doesn’t need to worry about). Two-thirds of the audience within the first three days were over the age of 35.

The Disney-Fox merger is one of the biggest industry stories of the year, and it turns out “The Simpsons” saw it coming 19 years ago. The show has always managed to predict the future, be it Trump’s presidency or the FIFA corruption scandal, and it appears Matt Groening and company somehow knew their series would one day be owned by Disney.

Now that Disney is purchasing 21st Century Fox, here’s what we know: $52.4 billion will change hands, the six-studio system will now be five, and Disney will have a serious arsenal for the 2019 launch of its over-the-top streaming services. Presuming that Disney convinces the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice that the union won’t violate existing antitrust laws, here’s a look at some of the merger’s biggest questions.
What Becomes of Fox’s Leadership?
The Disney/Fox merger comes on the same day that Disney/Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits multiplexes. Who from the Fox motion picture side will go to Disney (vice-chairman Emma Watts?) and who will be free to look for a new job (Fox chairman Stacey Snider?). Disney is happy with studio steward Alan Horn and his team.

After weeks of speculation, Disney is officially set to buy a majority of 21st Century Fox’s properties in a $52.4 million deal. The purchase includes 21st Century Fox’s movie studio, 20th Century Fox, and the company’s regional sports channels. Disney is also taking ownership of television cable channels FX and National Geographic and is getting Fox’s stakes in Hulu and Sky.

“This is the purge, right?” Will Smith asked the crowd. “This is the cleanse, this is what happens. This is the natural reaction to the amount of light that came into the world when Barack Obama was the president.”
It was the day after Doug Jones’ stunning win in Alabama and Smith was in a Four Seasons conference room with Joel Edgerton and director David Ayer, promoting their Netflix film, “Bright.” Presumably in a nod to the film’s setting of dystopian Los Angeles, Netflix dressed down the Beverly Hills location with traffic cones, a rusty gate, and an upturned grocery cart.
While Smith never mentioned Jones or President Trump by name, he clearly had the current political climate in mind as he warmed to his subject. “We had to expect that [the pendulum] was going to go the other way,” he said. “As a cleanse — this is the darkness before the dawn.

In September 2014, veteran filmmaker Paul Schrader was livid. He had recently directed “Dying of the Light,” a grim thriller starring Nicolas Cage as CIA agent Evan Lake, who obsesses over tracking terrorists while suffering from a brain disease and losing his mind. The movie’s financiers wanted a more conventional espionage thriller than Schrader’s experimental, subjective narrative, so they took the movie away from Schrader, who sent an email explaining the conundrum to Cage. The actor struck a note or resignation.
“The unfortunate aspect to my having had so many careers in so many genres is that they can make a case to put me in box b instead of box a for money’s sake,” Cage wrote, in an email shared with IndieWire years later.
Schrader could relate. “Dying of the Light” arrived nearly 40 years after Schrader catapulted to fame with his screenplay for “Taxi Driver” and maintained...

When “The Crown” star Matt Smith was asked if he knew whether or not the Royal Family has watched “The Crown,” he gave IndieWire a line from classic spy thrillers: “If I’d told you, I’d have to kill you.”
That’s an unusual thing for an actor to say while promoting their show, but Smith did at least clarify that “I’m pretty certain that someone has seen it. In fact, I know that someone else has seen it.”
Then he repeated: “But if I told you which ones, I’d have to kill you.”
While it remains a mystery as to whom Smith was referring, he was otherwise relatively candid about shooting Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” Smith plays Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), in the series.

Though serialized overall, “The Crown” is a notable Netflix series in that it regularly delivers impeccably strong episodic arcs. Episodes stand out on their own and often feel constructed as a time capsule for that specific story. Season 2 continues this tradition, and IndieWire will explore select episodes via individual reviews. After all, the best standalone episodes deserve standalone analyses. Below, we take a look at Episode 2, “A Company of Men.”
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Crown” Season 2.]
Just because a character is unlikable — or downright repugnant — doesn’t mean he’s a bad character. The soon-to-be Prince Philip, after the third episode of Season 2, is the epitome of this conundrum. Many viewers complained about Matt Smith’s character in the first season, though few were mad enough to fault the actor’s performance (and they shouldn’t, given how wholly Smith gives himself to the role). Netflix has announced the cast of its reboot of Bravo’s 2003 hit series, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” featuring five new stand-out personalities. The group will serve as a modernized Fab 5, finding new faces to revitalize the show with a political agenda (and current food trends, of course).
Bobby Berk will lead in all things design, Karamo Brown will serve as culture expert, Antoni Porowski, former Fab 5-member Ted Allen’s personal chef, will handle everything food and wine, Tan France will be the show’s fashion guru, and stylist/“Gay of Thrones” host Jonathan Van Ness is, of course, there to share his knowledge on personal grooming. (Van Ness actually shot the series last summer, while “Gay of Thrones” was also in production.)

“Get Out” has emerged as one of the biggest contenders so far this awards season, earning prizes from the Gotham Awards, the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut may have come out all the way back in February, but it’s become the kind of classic that stays with critics and awards voters long after the credits roll.

Update (December 4): Steven Soderbergh has deleted a tweet in which he told Lowery that “Godless” creator Scott Frank had written a draft of the series in 2003.

Netflix was supposed to make watching TV easier than ever. But occasionally it turns the experience into a scavenger hunt, and a tedious one at that.
The most recent example comes from a fun yearly tradition between the four series that constitute The CW’s “Arrow”-verse: a mega-crossover event that blends the Greg Berlanti-produced quartet of DC Comics dramas for an epic, effects-laden adventure.
This year’s big crossover, dubbed “Crisis on Earth-x,” featured a wedding, alternate Earths, Nazis, the introduction of a new superhero, some unexpected team-ups, and plenty of kick-punching — all the stuff fans of these series enjoy.
But while fans watching this week were able to enjoy a seamless viewing experience, on par with catching a three-hour movie, future audiences won’t have that option. Instead, figuring out how to piece together “Crisis on Earth-x” will be a far more complicated endeavor.

Once upon a time, somewhere in the span between F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hunter S. Thompson, a dapper posse of aristocrat journalists thrived by combining pre-war sophistication with post-war sexuality. Belonging neither to the old world or the new, they were prophets of their present moment, a transitional group that helped lay the foundation for a culture that wouldn’t be able to accommodate them.
Gay Talese was perhaps the most notable of the group. The godfather of indulgent celebrity profiles, Talese elevated an entire medium by fleshing a routine portrait into a genuine piece of literature; published in the April 1966 issue of Esquire, “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” might well outlive the magazine that paid for it. Talese became almost as famous as the people featured in his work, and his reputation protected him from the rest of the 20th century; it seemed unthinkable that someone who could write...

In Netflix’s “Icarus,” director Bryan Fogel documented Dr. Grigory Rodchenko, the chemist who said he helped the Russian government execute a doping scheme at the 2014 Winter Olympics, then turned whistleblower after meeting Fogel. Now, Rodchenko has supplied diaries to the International Olympic Committee that may determine whether Russia may compete at the 2018 Games.
The New York Times has seen the journals, two hardback volumes that cover 2014 and 2015. On December 5, the I.O.C.’s Disciplinary Commission will announce its decision, and according to a document it published this week, Rodchenko’s entries have been deemed authentic and unaltered, meriting consideration “as a significant evidential element.”

In a statement to the Huffington Post on Tuesday, the Guinness World Records revealed that Bts officially holds the world record for most Twitter engagements as well as most Twitter engagements for a music group.
According to the organization, the seven-member group has totaled an average of roughly 252,200 retweets per tweet on Twitter to date.
For comparison, runner-up Harry Styles has received an average of 165,473 retweets -- just slightly above Bts' other official accounts, @bts_love_myself and @bts_bighit, which have drawn in an average of 103,290 and 72,739 retweets, respectively.

Bts hit the stage at the 2017 American Music Awards on Sunday, and brought the house down harder than any other artist at the star-studded event.
The members of the megahit Korean boy band -- Rm, Jin, Suga, Jungkook, V, J-Hope and Jimin -- stopped backstage after their show-stealing performance, and opened up to Et's Keltie Knight about what it was like to sing their hit "DNA" at the AMAs.

After a night like this, how can we not all have Bts love in our DNA??
The Love Yourself: Her band made history on Sunday night as the first Korean pop group to perform at the American Music Awards, which was just one of their moments from the show that had fans -- and pretty much the world at large -- singing their praises. Here's all the reasons Rm and his bandmates pretty much stole the night.

The Love Yourself: Her band made history on Sunday night as the first Korean pop group to perform at the American Music Awards, which was just one of their moments from the show that had fans -- and pretty much the world at large -- singing their praises. If you didn't know who they were before, their red carpet fashion, meme-able audience moments and impeccable choreography should have been more than enough to turn you into a superfan.

Bts rocked the 2017 American Music Awards!
The K-pop superstars were the first Korean boy band to perform at the AMAs, and they certainly didn't disappoint. Rm, Jin, Jimin, Jungkook, J-Hope, V and Suga slayed the awards show with "DNA" in their U.S. television performance debut.
The megastars were introduced by The Chainsmokers' Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, who admitted that they were "nervous" to introduce the band. Before they'd even announced the group, the audience was already freaking out.
The band took the stage one member at a time, slowly coming together for a mind-blowing performance featuring some of the most intricate choreography of any pop boy band ever.
The energetic performance had a profound impact on the crowd, to the point where people in the audience were openly weeping.

House of Cards is nearing its term limit soon, but tales of a certain Underwood staffer might go on.
Netflix is in the early stages of developing a spinoff of the Emmy-winning political drama, according to a report from our sister site Variety. The streaming service and production company Media Rights Capital are mulling several ideas for the spinoff, including one focused on President Frank Underwood’s ruthless chief of staff Doug Stamper, played by three-time Emmy nominee Michael Kelly. The other ideas haven’t been revealed yet, but all would take place in the same universe as the original House of Cards.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the finale of USA Network’s “The Sinner” in addition to the book on which it was based.]
USA Network’s “The Sinner” became one of the surprise hits of the summer for its fascinating look at how hidden and unresolved traumas can manifest in disturbing or downright horrifying ways. The psychologically twisted story delved deeply into the past of a woman who seemed relatively normal and happy, but whose abuse at the hands of multiple people eventually led to her murdering a man without apparent provocation.
German crime author Petra Hammesfahr penned the 1999 novel on which “The Sinner” is based, and for the most part the central mysteries remained the same in both versions. The television adaptation naturally also had the expected number of cosmetic changes: Cora Bender is now Cora Tannetti, a song played on a cassette tape now plays on a phone, and the setting has moved from Germany to a small city in New York.

“I know you did it for your son,” Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) tells the man who had imprisoned her for two months, during which he shot her up with heroin and obliterated her true memories. It’s a curiously generous statement for her to make, but it’s not the first time that “The Sinner” has found sympathy and common ground for people’s failings.
USA Network’s summer psychological thriller began with Cora stabbing Frankie Belmont (Eric Todd) to death seemingly without provocation during a day at the beach. It turns out that five years ago at a party, Frankie had tried and failed to revive Cora’s sickly sister Phoebe (Nadia Alexander) with whom he had been intimate. A song that was playing at the time of the tragic accident was the same song that triggered Cora to attack Frankie during that day at the beach.
