Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone are the frontrunners to win the Best Actress Oscar this year. Stone has so far won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Awards, and BAFTA among many others for her role as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Gladstone, on the other hand, won the Golden Globe for Killers of the Flower Moon but was controversially omitted from BAFTA nominations. She won the Best Actress Award at Saturday’s SAG Awards and Emma Stone’s reaction to it has sparked some interesting internet talk.

Oppenheimer won the marquee Cast in a Motion Picture prize as the 30th annual SAG Awards were presented Saturday, and its star Cillian Murphy might have wrestled Oscar front-runner status away from Paul Giamatti by taking the trophy for Male Actor in a Leading Role.

In a meditative and heartfelt speech, Barbra Streisand accepted the SAG Life Achievement Award on Saturday by paying tribute to the industry’s roots and extolling her abiding passion for the craft.
“For a couple of hours people could sit in a theater and escape their own troubles – what an idea! Moving pictures on a screen,” she said in remarks that followed a nearly 1-minute standing ovation as she took the stage.
“I can’t help but think back to the people who built this industry. Ironically, they were also escaping their own troubles,” she continued, in a contemplative but forceful tone. Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer and the four Warner Brothers “were all fleeing the prejudice they faced in Easter Europe, simply because of their religion. And they were dreamers, too, like all of us here tonight.

If Renate Reinsve hadn’t been offered the lead in Joachim Trier’s 2021 feature The Worst Person in the World, she was planning to quit acting and become a carpenter. After years of frustration with the roles being offered her in Norway, Reinsve had decided to try out Plan B: Learn woodworking and set up a carpentry school for young girls and women.
“I had just finished renovating my house,” Reinsve recalls, “and I really loved it, doing things with my hands, making something physical and real. So I thought: Maybe this is what I should be doing.”
But that call from Trier put Plan A back on the table. The Worst Person in the World, which Reinsve describes as an “anti-romantic romantic comedy,” premiered in Cannes and was an instant breakout. What will the list of winners at this Sunday’s British British Academy of Film and Television Arts (better known by its acronym BAFTA) Film Awards look like? A lot like the forthcoming Academy Awards, predict Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Denton Davidson and Daniel Montgomery, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan.

Exclusive: After Universal decided to go early with The Exorcist: Believer, the Blumhouse/Morgan Creek sequel reboot is eyeing a $30M+ opening on tracking, Deadline has learned from sources.
Currently we hear the R-rated movie is great with women under 25 in terms of first choice and unaided awareness, and that it’s looking similar to Paramount/Spyglass’ 2022 Scream which debuted to $30M.
Even if Exorcist: Believer opens in the high $20Ms, Uni/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek can still easily declare that it’s a record opening for the franchise. While the legendary pic’s heyday was in 1973 with the original being ultimately grossing a lifetime of $233M stateside, box office opening weekends weren’t recorded nationally at that point in time by the industry. 1990’s Exorcist III opened to $9.3M,...

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Poor Things” just moved to the top tier of Oscar contenders with a big win at the Venice Film Festival. It picked up the top prize, the Golden Lion, on September 9. That recognition came just eight days after it debuted on the rialto to rave reviews. The last American feature to win over the jury here was “Nomadland” four years ago. That flick went to sweep the Oscars, winning Best Picture, Director (Chloe Zhang) and a third Best Actress award for Frances McDormand.
“Poor Things” tells the tale of a young woman (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist (Willem Dafoe) who is then pursued by a millionaire (Mark Ruffalo). Stone, who reaped an Oscar bid for her first collaboration with Lanthimos on “The Favourite,” is the current frontrunner in our odds for Best Actress. The flick follows a “Frankenstein” plot, where Stone’s character, Bella Baxter, is brought back to life by a twisted scientist, only to find herself struggling to assimilate into the whimsical and bizarre universe Lanthimos creates in the movie.

Things are looking up -- way up -- for the latest film from the Greek cinematic maestro of weird, Yorgos Lanthimos. "Poor Things" had already been picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight before it made its way to the 80th Venice International Film Festival, but Searchlight recently pushed the film from its September 8 release date back to December amid the historic and ongoing WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes. If the studios had seen fit to part with less than 1 percent of their annual revenue to give the writers and actors a fair deal, many of us might have already seen "Poor Things" by now. But now we have all the more reason to look forward to it.

As pundits made their Golden Lion predictions in the last days of the Venice Film Festival, the general consensus was that it all depended on what kind of mood Damien Chazelle’s competition jury was in: playful, in which case Yorgos Lanthimos’s early critical darling “Poor Things” would sweep to victory; or sober, which could tilt the prize toward either of two urgent films about the global migrant crisis, breaking later in the fest, Matteo Garrone’s “Me Captain” and Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border.”
In the end, the jury split the difference, handing major prizes to all three films, plus Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s quiet, cryptic environmental fable “Evil Does Not Exist.” But playfulness ultimately pulled ahead. “Poor Things,” a delirious adult fantasy starring Emma Stone as a horny Frankenwoman on a wild coming-of-age journey, took the Golden Lion for best film of the festival, making good on the...

Toronto – The biggest surprise in Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, “North Star,” doesn’t occur in front of the camera. In this case, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham deliver exactly what you’d expect as three sisters reuniting for their mother’s latest marriage in the British countryside. Instead, it’s Scott Thomas’ abilities behind the camera that will raise eyebrows. The Best Actress Oscar winner demonstrates an impressive ability to stage a film with a glossy studio flick aesthetic that would make Nancy Meyers green with envy.

Exclusive: Venice Film Festival chief Alberto Barbera is appreciated by many in the film and media industries not only for having cemented Venice as a must-attend blue-ribbon festival, but also for his candour.
As we do every year, Deadline sat down with Barbera at the festival’s mid-point to discuss a lineup that has already wowed and frustrated audiences and which is as rich in off-screen sub-plots as any I can remember.
We started out by discussing how the rhythm of the festival has changed over the years, both for media and for him and his team…
Deadline: I know this is the crunch time for you. It’s the stage of the festival when those covering it and those organizing it are feeling the pinch of the late nights and heavy workload. The way we cover festivals has changed so much due to the proliferation of video, social media and the sheer content volume…...

Sandra Bullock has been greatly affected by the controversy surrounding “The Blind Side”.
Earlier this week, Michael Oher, the former NFL player upon whom the movie was based, filed a petition claiming that the story of Sean Tuohy and Leigh Anne Tuohy adopting him was a “lie.”

Bradley Cooper‘s Maestro, a biopic about composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre that he co-wrote, directed, and stars in, looks set to become an award season contender once it premieres at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in September. But if it’s recognized for makeup design, you can expect some controversy.

Of the 20 acting nominees from the last Academy Awards, only one of them was a previous Oscar winner. That was Cate Blanchett, who was nominated earlier as Best Actress for “Tár” (she won Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for “The Aviator” and Best Actress in 2014 for “Blue Jasmine”). That’s a bit of an irregularity.
In 2022, six of the 20 nominees were previous Oscar winners. The year before that, five out of the 20 nominees were previous Oscar winners and, in 2020, nine out of 20 were past Oscar winners. So that one out of 20 last year is peculiar.
But, how about this year? Will the stats return to normal or does last year’s figure indicate a changing shift in the academy nominating more newcomers? We’ve combed through all four of our Oscar acting charts to see how many of our predicted nominees are past winners. The final count is four and, rather neatly,...

“The Blind Side” actor Quinton Aaron is jumping to his co-star Sandra Bullock’s defence amid the legal drama surrounding Michael Oher and the Tuohy family.
Aaron played Oher in the 2009 flick alongside Bullock, who won a Best Actress Oscar for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy.
A synopsis for the film reads, “The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.”
With Oher now filing a lawsuit against the Tuohys this week, claiming they tricked him into a conservatorship shortly after he turned 18, social media users called for Bullock’s Oscar to be taken away.
However, Aaron insisted that’s not necessary.

A day after Michael Oher, the former NFL player and subject of the 2009 movie The Blind Side, alleged in a court filing that the family who took him in as a young player had deceived him about being adopted and deprived him of earnings from the Oscar-nominated film, the family has hit back.
A long rebuttal by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy’s high-powered entertainment attorney Marty Singer made public Tuesday said Oher’s claims “that the Tuohys have ever sought to profit off Mr. Oher is not only offensive, it is transparently ridiculous.”
Singer also said Oher recently “started to threaten [the family] about what he would do unless they paid him an eight-figure windfall, and, as part of that shakedown effort refused to cash the small profit checks from the Tuohys, they still deposited Mr. Oher’s equal share into a trust account they set up for his son.”

In 2011, the summer box office had concluded with a mid-budgeted historical drama starring primarily women dominating the box office for about a month from August to September. The movie featured an all-star cast, including Viola Davis, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain.
Deadline reveals that one of the film’s stars, Jessica Chastain, has proposed her idea for a sequel to the film. Hollywood loves feel-good, based-on-real-life sports dramas, and isn't shy about drastically altering the facts to mine these tales for maximum stand-up-and-cheer potential. The scrappy high-school basketball underdogs in "Hoosiers" were, despite the school's small enrollment, actually a top team in the state during that supposed Cinderella season (which is why the filmmakers opted to set the film in a fictional town). "Remember the Titans" is riddled with inaccuracies, one of the most egregious being that T.C. Williams High School's climactic game against George C. Marshall High occurred in the middle of the season. And while the title character of "Rudy" did fulfill his dream of suiting up for his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish, retired NFL quarterback Joe Montana, who was on the team at the time, says the dramatic uniform-dumping scene is a pure fabrication.

Robert De Niro will go down in Oscars — and cinema — history as one of the best actors of all time and could solidify that status by winning a third Oscar for his turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” By so doing, he’s set a new record for the longest gaps between Oscar wins.
Earlier this year, Judd Hirsch set a new record for the longest gap between Oscar nominations after he reaped a Best Supporting Actor bid for “The Fabelmans” 42 years after his nomination for “Ordinary People” in the same category. However, the record for the longest gap between Oscars wins has stood firm for some time and is held by Helen Hayes. She won her first Oscar in 1932 (for Best Actress) for “The Sin of Madelon Claudet.” She won her second Oscar almost 40 years later in 1971, for Best Supporting Actress for “Airport.”

The summer’s most anticipated comedy is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. After her two box office misfires of 2022 — “Amsterdam” and “Babylon” — Robbie is on the cusp of her first critical darling and giant financial hit in a long while. Two of her acclaimed performances brought her Academy Award nominations in the previous decade, so with “Barbie” opening in theaters, let’s look back at Robbie’s two Oscar races.
Her first Oscar nomination came in 2018 in the Best Actress category for her performance as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie, the film tells the true-life story of Harding’s rise in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and how everything came crashing down. During a time of tumult in the industry, when adult-oriented thrillers and dramas are increasingly dicey theatrical propositions, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kenneth Branagh has managed to keep his series of movies based on Agatha Christie‘s Detective Hercule Poirot going. Roughly 19 months after “Death on the Nile” — a critical and theatrical disappointment released in February after many delays forced by the coronavirus pandemic and controversy around star Armie Hammer — Branagh and Poirot are back in September with “A Haunting in Venice.”
On Wednesday, 20th Century Studios released a new trailer for the thriller, which stars Branagh and a cast of some major stars.

When the 2023 Tony nominations were released on May 2, two nominees made history. "Shucked" star Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" star J. Harrison Ghee became the first openly nonbinary people to receive a nomination in the acting categories. But, the news comes with a little sting: the Tonys don't have gender neutral acting categories, so both Newell and Ghee are nominated in the "actor" category.
The call for gender neutral acting categories at major award shows has grown in recent years, thanks in large part to the increased visibility of nonbinary actors. "Yellowjackets" star Liv Hewson, who plays Teen Van on the show, told Variety in April that they wouldn't be submitting for the Emmys at all because of the show's gender-segregated categories.
"I don't want the limitations in terms of the language in the categories to be a reason that nonbinary actors like me can't be celebrated."

The legendary Judy Garland, one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, would have turned 100 on June 10, 2022. To celebrate her career, tour our photo gallery looking back at her greatest film performances.
Known as the little girl (she was only 4’11) with the big voice, Garland was a rare true triple threat, holding her own with such great dancers as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, twice receiving Oscar nominations in acting categories, as well as leaving behind a legacy of record-breaking concerts, a Grammy-winning gold album and recordings of iconic songs that no one else has ever been able to capture in quite the same way.

According to our current combined predictions, Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”) is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Play at this year’s Tony Awards with 12/5 odds. She already won an Olivier a couple of months ago for her work in the West End production. She would be the fifth Tony winner in this category for a one-woman performance.
In Suzie Miller‘s one-woman show, Comer plays Tessa, a barrister from working-class origins who must deal with an unexpected event that forces her to confront the patriarchal power and morality of the law.
When it comes to solo performances at the Tonys, four have prevailed in this category before. If there was an award for the savviest U.S. distributor at the Cannes Film Festival, it would have to go to Neon, which scored its fourth consecutive Palme d’Or at the conclusion of the 76th edition on Saturday. The top prize went to French director Justine Triet for “Anatomy of a Fall,” a murder mystery and courtroom drama starring Sandra Hüller that Neon acquired shortly after its festival premiere on Tuesday.
In the two weeks leading up to the end of this year’s festival, critical consensus focused on “The Zone of Interest,” Jonathan Glazer’s austere riff on Martin Amis’ novel about the commander of Auschwitz. As a result, many assumed it would be an obvious choice for the Palme.
But critics don’t pick that prize; the jury is composed of filmmakers and actors who tend to land on a consensus choice for the top prize...

In Hollywood, success usually begets sequels; if a movie wins Oscars and brings in big bucks at the box office, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that a sequel will be coming soon.
However, it appears that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won’t be following that typical trajectory.

Despite the film’s mammoth Oscar take — seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and a Best Actress win for Yeoh — she thinks that an “Everything Everywhere” sequel would be redundant.
“We would just be doing the same thing,” she said.
Meanwhile, Yeoh also believes that the unexpected success of the film holds an important lesson for Hollywood,...

In the play Prima Facie, Jodie Comer is alone on stage for the full length of the show’s 100 minutes, starting as a brash, bloviating barrister, then turning to a quieter, more vulnerable woman trying to find justice for herself in the very legal system that had previously propped her up.
Before making her West End debut in the play last year, the Killing Eve star says she hadn’t appeared on stage (aside from a play in a “very, very small theater” in Scotland when she was 16 years old). And so taking on this marathon role not only required intense dedication and memorization, but also a recalibration of her acting style in order to emote to an 800-plus seat theater, rather than to the camera.
In the drama, written by Suzie Miller, Comer plays Tessa Ensler, a talented, young lawyer who defends individuals accused of sexual assault and then...

It’s alive.
On Thursday, Searchlight Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Poor Things” starring Emma Stone as a woman brought back to life by a scientific madman.
The new film, which Searchlight will debut in theaters on September 8, is Lanthimos’ first feature since 2018’s “The Favourite.” That one was a breakout hit for the filmmaker, landing 10 total Oscar nominations and a Best Actress win for star Olivia Colman. Lanthimos was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture for “The Favourite,” while Stone scored a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Whether the academy is on the same wavelength as the director and his star for “Poor Things” remains to be seen, but pre-release hype for the film has been building since last year. From this perch, the new teaser does nothing to dull the anticipation while offering little more than a visual interpretation of the brief synopsis the studio provided previously.
