Scratch TV - it's like Hip Hop telly!
Am I the only person in the world that saw this when it was transmitted? Astonishing TV and well ahead of its time. Lots of vintage TV footage cut up and reassembled so you get scenes of politicians speaking but you hear Hammy Hamster and his pals from Tales of the Riverbank. Loads of cult stuff - Gerry Anderson, The Prisoner, Marcus Welby MD mixed up with westerns, gangsters, you name it. There's also an amazing musical sequence that looks like the sort of stuff that Coldcut do live. The whole thing takes the form of an evenings television scheduling with news, sport drama and so on all connected and hosted by Peter Brady aka The Invisible Man from the black and white 60s TV series.
If one were to make any criticism, it might be that some of the material has dated a bit - there are lots of references to the Spy Catcher trial and Margaret Thatcher talking about hospital waiting lists(!) Conversely it can be seen as an interesting historical document from the 1980s. That's not why you need to see it though. It deserves exposure because it was a startlingly original piece of television. Think DJ shadow with film libraries and a video mixer and you're half way there. Did I say that I love it?
