The tragicomic film "Heldenfruehling" is set in Austria during the last weeks of World War II in 1945. Two fifteen year-old adolescents from Austria and Germany respectively are conscripted to the army's "Volkssturm" just a few weeks before the capitulation. While they struggle to survive and find their way in this new, unexpected situation, they also experience their first amorous adventures. On their way, they encounter fanatic commanders and comrades, who simply don't want to accept that war will soon be lost, as well as right-minded soldiers with a realistic assessment of the situation. The film connects a humorous view on the two boys' struggles with their sexual awakening with the serious background of the Nazi regime, thus combining comedy and tragedy, without those parts ever clashing.
