One of the most cinematic cities in the world has been showcased in literally hundreds of movies. We gave Guardian film editor Andrew Pulver the unenviable task of choosing just 10 great films set in the city
As featured in our New York city guide
Manhattan, Woody Allen, 1979
"He adored New York City. He idolised it all out of proportion." Woody Allen could never be accused of ignoring his native city, returning time and again to eulogise the virtues of its buildings and its inhabitants. With this black-and-white story of faithless lovers and nervous courtships wending their way through major art galleries, celebrated restaurants and picturesque landmarks, he came closest to the perfect love letter to the place. Filmed in jazz-age black-and-white, and opening with a stunning montage set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Manhattan is suffused with an affectionate, excited nostalgia.

Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, and The Pacific all had multiple episodes/installments nominated in their respective categories, but joining them in being nominated (though not necessarily in the same category) were an episode from The Hills, an episode of Glee that wasn't received terribly well, and Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. You can read the full list of nominees below in the press release.

America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story (Criterion) Perhaps the best DVD box set released this year, this ultimate cinefile stocking stuffer offered up by Criterion, the Rolls-Royce of home video labels, features seven seminal works from the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that were brought to life by cutting edge producers Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner and director/producer Bob Rafelson, the principals of Bbs Productions. In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. Easy Rider (1969) is arguably regarded as the seminal ‘60s picture, about two hippie drug dealers (director Dennis Hopper...

Gershwin fans, “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” but according to Deadline Hollywood Daily, Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto has been picked by Dreamworks to play the role of George Gershwin in a musical biopic based on the New York songwriter. Composer of many jazz standards, along with brilliant pieces like “Rhapsody in Blue” and various Broadway musicals, Gershwin died at the age of 38 on July 11, 1937.
The studio has apparently been supplying Quinto with dialogue and accent coaches, to help him prepare for a tentative shooting date that could be as early as April 2010.
A script has been written by Doug Wright (Quills) and Marc Platt and Michael Feinstein are producing.
At the same time, it is said that director Steven Spielberg has been considering his own involvement with the film. As some of you may know, he was originally supposed to direct a remake of the Jimmy Stewart movie Harvey for Dreamworks,...
