This is another one of my favorite video games of all time as well as one of my favorite action RPGs and games for the NES, but also this is my favorite in the series.
The sad thing about the "Gargoyles Quest" franchise was that this never risen to heights like all of Capcom's other popular franchises which is really too bad because this series really had lots of potential, had this series got the attention it need it could of risen to heights we can't imagine.
The problems as to why are the simple fact that each volume in the game was released on different systems which unfortunately made each volume too far spread apart from one another. This could have caused some confusion as not a lot of people have owned a Game Boy let alone the first game, which probably made some gamers wonder where the first game was.
But the main problem was simply that this game was simply a victim of bad timing as this game came out during the twilight years of the NES which meant a lot of games for the NES have been overlooked and passed by just as everyone including myself were starting to move on to the Genesis and SNES. But despite that fact personally I felt this game was one of the best send offs for the system and as time went on, this game and the franchise became a cult classic. This action RPG really is slightly unique from most and still is, which is part of the reason why I love the genre because there is always something different it offers.
Nothing special about the plotline as it's just the typical cliché fantasy plotline of liberating the kingdom and land in the grip of evil. But due to some text you get more and more of in the game there is a bit of intrigue.
It's really more the setting and the kind of protagonist you play that makes the game stand out. The setting I think is awesome, it's a dark fantasy much like with games like "Castlevania", "Ghouls N' Ghosts", etc. This setting is a fantasy world where monsters are the dominant species and humans are nonexistent, it makes sense as fantasy genre doesn't mean everyone has to be human or the world has to be normal. I really like seeing the game in color which looks even better as it really makes the world and characters from the first game look even more interesting .
I like how dark, foreboding, but also fascinating this medieval monster world is, where we see some of the familiar medieval settings like the typical buildings and villages from that period of time but then there are certain lands that aren't the norm like a forest where there are oversized mushrooms and other strange plants no botanist ever seen before.
Like the designs of the enemies and bosses that also have the fantasy horror theme and a few of the bosses are really strange and all messed up looking you have to see them yourself to believe it.
Music is solid, it's nothing that I would download onto my phone, but the music still fits the game and feels right. The gameplay is great, the control is responsive. Like in most of the action RPG's you have the mechanic of leveling up as you get further in the game which is really rewarding as your abilities increase in strength, so does your progress. One thing that makes the action stand out is the flying and platforming mechanics which really help put you one step ahead of the game.
Your weapon is your fire breath where you shoot out fireballs much like "Karnov" but as you character levels up you shoot other things like mace balls which are cool. You have the flying where when you jump you press the jump button again and you are flapping your wings to fly in midair.
However, there are a couple of catches to this, depending on how long the wing span meter is you can only fly in mid air for a certain amount of time. Also, you can't fly up or down, you can only go left or right, to elevate more you have to jump up. So, pick you jumps and flight paths carefully.
Another thing you have is being able to stick to the walls like "Spider Man". These makes the platforming even more interesting and accessible, where you not just have to land on top a platform, but you can land on the sides.
This is very helpful as there are certain platforming maneuvers you can't do the conventional way. But there's also a catch to this as you stick to the wall, but you can climb them, you can only jump up or away from them depending on where you want to go. So, pick you jumps and platforming carefully.
But the two things I love about the game was how much it has improved over its predecessor. From the campaign being a lot longer but also the overworld it's a lot broader there is a bit more to explore and has a bit more to do in a place or two depending on you.
However this game isn't perfect, the only bad thing for me about the game is there are some spots in the game that are a tad tricky, like gaps that are just a little too big to clear, moving platforms far away but also some of these moving platforms shoot out projectiles. Not to say I wasn't able to clear the obstacles, but those obstacles didn't feel necessary and just provided unnecessary difficulty that slows the game up. However, these things are only in a bit of the first half of the game, after that everything else is fine.
It would be awesome if this franchise was revisited and we got a fourth sequel which can be in 2D form either made either in NES or SNES format, keep everything but you can add some new things to the table like gather on the quest a party of monsters either other Gargoyles or different kinds of monster like a werewolf, lizard man, monster from Lovecraft lore you name it each with different abilities and powers. Or even just a big modern-day revival where the game is in 3D, it could be a little like "Devil May Cry" with the combat but the RPG elements of the game intact.
Though if anything else probably rerelease all three games in a trio anthology pack and we can have the remastered if possible, as rereleasing retro games and remastering them has become a common trend. These are all nice thoughts anyway to consider.
If you're a fan of vintage action RPGs this game is worth a test flight, Gargoyles Quest 2 flies high.
