Twenty-five years after the international premiere of his graduation work “Banquet of The Beasts” in the Panorama section, and twenty-two after “Hole in the Sky”, Kazuyoshi Kumakiri is back in Berlin with the thriller “#Manhole” which celebrates its international premiere in the Berlinale Special program. In this one-man suspense drama, a relatively simple story of an unfortunate incident evolves into a film rich with unexpected twists.
“#Manhole” is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival Spring Showcase
On the evening before his wedding day, Shunsuke (Yuto Nakajima) walks into into his own stag party he was unaware of. The mood is excellent: as congratulations pour in, so do drinks. A bit wobbly after a drink too many in a pub in Shibuya district, Shunsuke falls inside a manhole, and wakes up injured and unable to climb back to the street. To make things worse, his cellphone Gps stops working and...

Two working filmmaker mothers, Japan’s Yukiko Sode and Indonesia’s Kamila Andini, talked about their craft and the particular challenges they face in an industry not known for its family-friendly working environments as part of the Conversation Series at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
The talk was one of the series of events at the Asia Lounge, the brainchild of director Hirokazu Kore-eda and co-presented by the festival and the Japan Foundation.
Andini praised Sode’s film Aristocrats, which played at the festival last year, for being “written and delivered with a female gaze,” and for “characters [that] are truly Asian,” adding,...

One of the key thoughts behind the architecture of cities is to give its citizens much needed space to meet and make it possible for each of them to reach every district. While the theory is perhaps taken into account when it comes to city planning, the reality is quite a different one, because urban geography and architecture actually divides people, and often confirms concepts such as social strata. This is not so much the fault of the planning itself, but is more the result of certain prejudices or mindsets within society, ideas that people should stick to members of their own class and should not mingle with others. In her feature “Aristocrats” Yukiko Sode explores themes such as class and gender, as well as the way the layout of cities like Tokyo makes it possible for a certain class to stay within itself.

There is much to say about Tokyo. A multi-layered metropolis with a futuristic flick; an urban tissue, moving bodies trying to catch the train in ever-busy Shinjuku station; skyscrapers as high as the solitude of protagonists lost in translation; a motionless mass of people wearing their masks in a post-Teshigahara dystopic vision of a surrealist waltz going live (think of the last scene of “The Face of Another”). Piling up her take on Tokyo is Yukiko Sode, the director of “Aristocrats”, with a subtle dive into the melodrama of high class and those below, in which Japanese capital becomes a scene for the bourgeois acts of self-indulgence and a trial for women’s agency.

Anders Thomas Jensen’s action comedy “Riders of Justice,” starring Mads Mikkelsen, will open the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam. The festival will be staged in two parts this year: the first, in a hybrid format, running Feb. 1-7, and the second, hopefully a physical event, June 2-6. The awards ceremony will take place on Feb. 7.
In “Riders of Justice,” Mikkelsen plays Markus, a military man who returns home to look after his daughter Mathilde following his wife’s death in a train accident. At first it looks like she was the victim of a tragic piece of bad luck, but then mathematics geek Otto (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), a fellow passenger on the train, shows up with his two eccentric colleagues, Lennart (Lars Brygmann) and Emmenthaler (Nicolas Bro), and floats the theory of a possible murder conspiracy. The film plays in the Limelight section.

Starship Troopers - Terran Command looks to capture the greatness of the film, but will it be able to?
We're happy to deliver the surprising news that a new Starship Troopers game is set to be released in 2020.
It's called Starship Troopers - Terran Command, and developer The Aristocrats promises that it will deliver a strategy gaming experience that combines “classic real-time mechanics, tower defense and tactical deployment of units.” The basic premise sees you defend a colony of humans against attacking arachnid forces using a variety of tactics. While that famous "base invasion" scene from Starship Troopers combined with some of what Terran Command's developers are saying leads us to suspect that this game will play similarly to "defense" titles like They Are Billions, it sounds like the final product may afford you a bit more creative freedom in terms of how you deal with the game's numerous enemies.
