Da Pennebaker’s documentary offers moving moments and raw immediacy as the musician takes on his final performance as Ziggy Stardust
Da Pennebaker’s record of David Bowie’s final concert on the Ziggy Stardust tour at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in 1973 (Bowie is part of the reason we will never be reconciled to saying “Eventim Apollo”) is rereleased after a restoration. It was the legendary “all killer no filler” gig at which, in the presence of the Spiders from Mars – Mick Ronson (guitar), Trevor Bolder (bass), Mick Woodmansey (drums) – he retired his Ziggy Stardust persona, announcing to a stunned crowd that it was the last time he would ever play (as Ziggy).
The show itself, in which Bowie and band members appear starkly key-lit in darkness, with the crowd glimpsed briefly and almost stroboscopically, looks intriguingly intimate, like something at a much smaller club venue. The concert is straightforward...

Erik Thomson (Photo: Alex Vaughan).
In a perfect world Erik Thomson would have just wrapped filming of Amazon Prime’s Back to the Rafters and have started pre-production on the ABC dramedy Yes, Chef!
Stateless star Fayssal Bazzi would be preparing to go to the Us to meet with agents and producers and looking forward to the May release of Paul Ireland’s Measure or Measure, in which he co-stars with Hugo Weaving.
After roles in Amazon Studios’ historical drama The Underground Railroad and the BBC and Netflix serial-killer drama The Serpent, Damon Herriman was set to star in a film in New Zealand.
Roz Hammond was getting ready to perform alongside Lachy Hulme in director Tyran Parke’s stage adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at Her Majesty’s in May.
All of that is now on hold, of course, curtailed by the Covid-19 crisis.

Peter Parker’s Spider-Man has starred in 10 movies across various franchises and is easily one of the most profitable Marvel superheroes on the big screen. It’s strange, then, that his female counterpart Spider-Woman has yet to make her first live-action appearance. As the Spider-verse continues to thrive in various ways, though, the debut of Jessica Drew can’t be far away.
In fact, We Got This Covered has learned that Marvel has definite plans for Spider-Woman in the McU, with actresses already being eyed to play the role. Specifically, Shailene Woodley is one of the stars on the studio’s wishlist to portray the heroine in the franchise. Woodley will be a name already familiar to Spidey fans, too, as she was originally cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before her scenes were cut.
It seems there’s a pattern developing here as well, as...

Nicolas Winding Refn always has a lot to say, and he always says it well: at his press conference at the Cannes Film Festival with star Miles Teller for his new Amazon series “Too Old to Die Young” he made himself very clear about what’s ahead for the film industry.
“This is a 13-hour movie, and it’s streaming,” Refn said. “This is the future, which is streaming.”
His last theatrical release, 2016’s “The Neon Demon” was distributed by Amazon Studios. “Amazon said, ‘What do you want to do next?’ And I was like, ‘I want to do a TV series.’ The word around Hollywood was, ‘You gotta get into TV. You gotta get into TV.’ But I don’t really watch that much TV.”
Refn’s inspiration for “Too Old to Die Young,” and its riddle-like title, came to him while he was sitting in a car in Los Angeles.

Last December’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse turned out to be a major win for Sony. As well as a solid box office performance, it’s beloved by fans and went and landed itself both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. It’s no surprise that the studio is already working on both a sequel and a Spider-Women spinoff, then. What’s more, though, is that we’re hearing that additional Spider-Verse movies could be in the works.
A source has told We Got This Covered that Sony’s developing a spinoff for Spider-Man Noir. The gun-toting black and white wall-crawler played a major supporting role in the first Spider-Verse as one of the team of Spiders that aids Miles Morales and Peter B. Parker in defeating Kingpin’s plot to destroy the multiverse. He was memorably voiced by the one and only Nicolas Cage and thankfully, the intention...

Jeff Tweedy thought Wilco’s 2004 album, A Ghost Is Born, would be his last. At the time, his addiction to Vicodin and his lifelong anxiety issues had spiraled so far out of control that on tour he routinely fell asleep in his bathtub without being sure he’d wake up. He wrote songs like the gorgeous elegy “Hummingbird” for his young sons, “who could turn to it when they were older … to have some deeper connection to the dad they’d lost.” When the band recorded “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” he was...

Claire Foy is a credible Lisbeth Salander, but The Girl in the Spider's Web waters her down in bland action movie cliché.
The return of Lisbeth Salander to the big screen should be a big deal. As one of the most fascinating heroines to come out of literature in this century, Stieg Larsson’s avenging goth angel took millions of readers by storm, and then by heartache, as Larsson’s death prevented the plan to continue her adventures for years to come. Yet in Hollywood, the girl with the dragon tattoo remains an elusive figure. David Fincher’s vision and Rooney Mara’s magnetism couldn’t quite turn her into a global franchise for adults, and now The Girl in the Spider’s Web is content to simply reimagine her as something jejune and small: it turns her into a superhero.
This too is the wrong impulse.

No matter how much you may love and admire Steven Spielberg and James Wan for their original works, you have to raise an eyebrow on their decision to remake 90’s horror-comedy Arachnophobia.
The remake is in its very early stages at this point with only Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Wan’s Atomic Monster and the film’s original director, Frank Marshall as an executive producer attached. It is not thought that Wan will direct.
Marshall made his directorial debut on Arachnophobia in 1990. The original film starred Jeff Daniels and John Goodman and focused on a newly discovered Venezuelan spider being transported to a small American town, and producing a new species of deadly spiders, which begin killing the town’s residents. The film made approximately $53 million at the box office.

Beautiful, breathtaking and exciting. These are some of the terms being used after critics have viewed the stunning trailer for the upcoming Greedfall game by Spiders game studio. Being developed for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC the player takes on the role of the cousin of the governor of a new city. You are tasked with initially dealing with the diplomacy between the various fictional nation states present on the Island.
The concept art sets the tone for a picturesque sweeping rugged landscape
The game doesn't all focus on diplomacy, there is also combat, stealth missions and deception as you attempt to ally yourself with the various races who seek to control the Island. The setting is a fantasy version of the 17th Century, with the mood, tone and weaponry coming from a historically accurate depiction of that era, mixed with a world inhabited by elves and giant beasts.

Just how many giant spider movies will we get before filmmakers realise that None will beat 2000s Spiders, directed by Gary Jones (Mosquito) and starring Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time’s Evil Queen), which had a sequel in 2001… This week’s contender for the spider-movie crown is the Italian monster-movie Arachnicide, a title which connotes a much greater movie than this film actually is!
Yes this latest giant spider movie is an Italian horror film, however don’t expect Fulci levels of spider-based gore, this one is sadly a made-for-tv affair directed by Paolo Bertola, who has been working steadily away producing TV movies in Italy for some years. However only his 2011 film My Lai Four has made it to these shores previously, released by Scanbox (remember them?) back in 2011 as Massacre at My Lai Four.

How many “Spiders” films are there now on DVD? There’s my favourite: 2000s Spiders, directed by Gary Jones (Mosquito) and starring Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time’s Evil Queen), which had a sequel in 2001. Then there’s Spiders 3D. Originally released in 3D in 2013, the film dropped the “3D” from its title when it hit DVD the same year (though the 3D blu-ray didn’t)… And now comes Spiders, a retitling of an Italian monster-movie originally called Arachnicide – a much cooler title, yet one I’m guessing was too highbrow from the plebians that UK supermarkets think their “audiences” are…

Around these parts there are several of us looking forward to this movie as if it were the event of the summer. Well, namely Foy and I. Finally we have the home video plans and even three incredibly bloody new stills for you to dig into!

He's not your grandfather's Paul Bunyan, the powerful, cheerful lumberjack clearing fields to help build America. No, he's 15 feet and half a ton of brutality, and he's on the loose in Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan. The award-winning creature feature slashes its way onto DVD from Virgil Films on June 18, 2013, wielding an Srp of $19.99.
Veteran horror film writer/producer/director Gary Jones (Boogeyman 3, Ghouls, Spiders) and writer/producer Jeff Miller (Hellblock 13, Ballistica) turn one of North America's legendary heroes into a monster who lets trees stand but has a thing about young people running around his forest.

I’ve been looking forward to Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan ever since I first heard about it, and it won’t be too much longer until we all get a chance to see what happens when a great American tall tale gets a monstrous slasher makeover.
Is it correct to call it a slasher? If the killer’s preferred instrument of death is an axe and the killer in question is a giant lumberjack, then wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it a hacker? Eh, I’m over-thinking this.

Fangoria: How did you become involved in Spiders?
Tibor Takacs: About three or four years ago, Boaz Davidson at Nu Image started talking to me about the possibility of doing a giant-creature movie. What horror fan doesn’t have a nostalgic love for the classic monster movies like Godzilla or Mothra? Around that time, there was a surge of interest in 3D production, and being a fan of stereo photography and 3D movies, I saw Spiders as an opportunity to make my own. I’ve always been intrigued by 3D’s creative possibilities, but until now the size of the cameras and the complexity of the process didn’t appeal to my sensibilities as a director. As new 3D software and hardware became available, I realized that it was feasible, with some knowhow, to do good 3D on a budget. Boaz supported the 3D idea, and the Spiders project got its go-ahead.

Hard to believe we’re due two giant spiders terrorizing a major city movies this year. Mega Spider will have to wait while Christa Campbell and Patrick Muldoon contend with giant spiders in a 3D movie from the director of The Gate.
Christa Campbell (who also served as a producer on Texas Chainsaw 3D, so you know she’s have a good week regardless of what knuckleheads like myself thought of the film) stars as a New York City health inspector who pairs up with Starship Troopers brain suckee Patrick Muldoon to contend with mutant spiders ranging from five-foot to “Godzilla vs.” size spawned by the wreckage of a Soviet space station that crashes down onto the Big Apple.
Tibor Tackas, director of such fine horror offerings as The Gate, I, Madman, Mansquito, and Ice Spiders directs from a script by Joseph Farrugia.

One horror flick that has me curious is Gary Jones' Bunyan, a reimagining of the tall tale of titanic lumberjack Paul Bunyan that brings his legend to bloody life as a 15-foot giant maniac with a very large ax. Producer Jeff Miller was kind enough to send over some news stills from the movie and word of a new cast member who's no stranger to forests.
Dan Haggerty, best known as TV's "Grizzly Adams" but forever in the heart of schlock movie fans like myself for his portrayal of a chain-smoking department store Santa battling an evil Nazi elf in the bad movie classic Elves, has joined the cast of Bunyan.
Here's the latest press release regarding the ongoing filming of Bunyan:
"Bunyan, the new horror/creature film from director Gary Jones and producer Jeff Miller, filmed for several more days in Ohio this fall.

Tibor Takacs, the director of one of my favourite scary movies from my childhood – The Gate – is returning to the big screen (hopefully) with the creepy-crawly monster movie Spiders 3D.
Following a crash of an old Soviet space station in New York City’s subway tunnel, a new species of poisonous spiders is discovered. Inadvertently the spiders mutate to gigantic proportions and wreak havoc on the entire city.
Thanks once again to Dread Central and their exhaustive Afm (American Film Market) coverage we have the first look at the poster / sales art for the film – here’s hoping this low-budget production is as much fun as Eight Legged Freaks and Gary Jones’ Spiders!

I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone associated with the genre felt the inexplicable need to transform the iconic folk hero Paul Bunyan into a horror movie monster. Director Gary Jones — who is largely responsible for such legendary outings as “Spiders” and “Boogeyman 3″ — is in the middle of lensing his upcoming production “Bunyan”, a motion picture which finds a group of teenagers battling a 15-foot giant with a penchant for murder and mayhem. Robert Kurtzman’s Creature Corps is handling the effects. No word yet if Bunyan’s trusty blue ox will make an appearance, though I wouldn’t bank on it. “Bunyan” stars Joe Estevez, Tom Downey, Tim Lovelace, Jesse Kove, Amber Connor, Cliff Williams, Victoria Ramos, Kristina Kopf, and Jill Evyn. A handful of pics rest below. Thanks to Shock Till You Drop for providing the goodies.

Gary Jones is in principal photography on Bunyan , a bloody riff off the tall tale of, you guessed it, Paul Bunyan. The director previously helmed Boogeyman 3 , Spiders and Crocodile 2 . For his latest effort, he takes us to a first-time offenders boot camp where the kids there learn the Paul Bunyan legend is real, horrifying, and a 15-foot monstrous giant! We've got your first look via the photos below. The movie stars genre vet Joe Estevez, Tom Downey, and Tim Lovelace. Jesse Kove, Amber Connor, Cliff Williams, Victoria Ramos, Kristina Kopf, and Jill Evyn round out the cast. Jeff Miller scripted with Jones. The former is also co-producing. On effects duties, expect to see the work of Robert Kurtzman's Creature Corps. Shooting is taking place in the Los Angeles...

Thanks to Bloody-Disgusting, we now have the restricted trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1980 horror film "Night of the Demons." The new stars Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie) and Edward Furlong (Terminator 2, American History X). Plot: Angela Feld is throwing the Halloween party to end all Halloween parties at the infamous Broussard Mansion in New Orleans, where dark events transpired almost a century ago. But when the packed party gets busted by the police, Angela and her friends Maddie, Lily, Suzanne, Colin, Dex and Jason are the only ones left behind. Soon Colin and Angela make a grisly discovery in the basement and inexplicable events start to take place. With the mansion gates mysteriously locked, the seven find themselves trapped for the night... and soon they're fighting ancient demons for their very souls. The new movie is director Adam Gierasch's sophomore effort. He is better known for writing scripts...

Boogeyman 3
Stars: Erin Cahill, Chuck Hittinger, Mimi Michaels and Nikki Sanderson | Written by Brian Sieve | Directed by Gary Jones
College student Audrey Allen (ex-Corie actress Sanderson) is haunted by the Boogeyman following her fathers death (in Boogeyman 2), and tries to convince her best friend Sarah (Cahill), a psychology student, that the Boogeyman is real. Sarah doesn’t believe her until she witnesses Audrey’s death one night at the hands of the monster.
Whilst everyone is convinced that Audrey committed suicide, only Sarah knows the truth – the Boogeyman is real and he’s haunting the dorms of Hammond Hall.
Following my disappointment in the first Boogeyman film and having skipped Boogeyman 2, I wasn’t holding out much hope for the third in the series. I could not have been more surprised. Boogeyman 3 features a supernatural villain in the grand tradition of Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees,...

After the Academy’s attempt at honoring genre during the live show, we saw a real tribute to horror by someone who is truly one of our own. Bob Murawski thanked Sam Raimi for giving him his “first cutting job” in Army of Darkness. His Best Editing award for Hurt Locker was shared by his partner Chris Innis, whom he met on the Raimi produced TV show “American Gothic.”
I gotta say, never since Peter Jackson’s (who was nominated this year for District 9) thank you to the crew of Meet the Feebles has there been such an excellent genre shout out.
On top of working with Raimi for over a decade, Murawski also runs Grindhouse Releasing, which distributes and restores cult and horror films with a focus on extreme Italian cinema. Pieces, The Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust, and I Drink Your Blood are just a few names you’ll find in Grindhouse Releasing's catalogue.
