Bill Kong is cautious, vastly experienced and has an impeccable reputation as a key gateway between Hollywood and China to maintain. He is someone far more likely to deadpan than gush.
So, to hear him getting into high gear with a pitch for his bucket list martial arts movie project “The Furious” immediately invites comparison with previous Kong-produced action pictures including Oscar-winner “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Jet Li’s Fearless” or the Zhang Yimou-directed “Hero.”
“I’m going to do an action movie that rocks the world. And to prove that Hong Kong still has something to give the film industry. I want to show that Asian people can still make an action movie that is better than the rest of the world,” Kong tells Variety.
Significantly, “The Furious” is a project made by Hong Kong, rather than made in Hong Kong. Kong’s Edko Films is financing and producing.

Each new episode of Shōgun raises the stakes, deepens the political intrigue, and brings us closer to the brink of war. It’s a description that, years ago, would have applied to Game of Thrones, a show to which Shōgun has been compared ad nauseam. It’s not an inappropriate comparison. Both tout sprawling casts, sweeping locations, political intrigue, backstabbing, and characters residing in moral gray areas, ready to surprise and disappoint. Though, it may be more apt to compare the show to Japan’s Chanbara or samurai films.
Given Shōgun’s intensity and cliffhangers, waiting a week between episodes is excruciating. Digging back into Game of Thrones or even House of the Dragon might not scratch that Shōgun itch in the long days between installments.
Instead, let’s dive into samurai epics in and around the Edo period when Ieyasu Tokugawa unified Japan and built a shogunate that ruled for more than two centuries,...

In the latest surge of live action adaptations that Netflix seems to lead, either in movie or series format, an essentially forgotten anime and manga from the 90s, was not exactly something that was expected, considering that the rest were based on all time favorites like “One Piece” and “Rurouni Kenshin” for example. It turns out, though, that the manga being one of the best selling of all times played a crucial role, and that is how we ended up with a version of “Yu Yu Hakusho”.

The last wuxia film Yen starred in was “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” (2016), since, although he was in “New Kung Fu Cult Master Part One” (2022) it was only a cameo. As is the tendency in Japanese cinema, particularly during the last decade, another very popular manga/anime is adapted into a live-action movie, in a trend that has produced both great films and huge blunders (Attack on Titan). Let us see what category does “Tokyo Ghoul” falls under.
The story takes place in a world infested by Ghouls, vampire-like creatures that look like humans but are actually monsters, that feed solely on human flesh. The problems instigated by them are so significant that the police has introduced a special branch that deals exclusively with them, with Kureo Mado and his assistant, Kotaro Amon being the enforcers. This world suddenly collapses upon Ken Kaneki, a university student who finally manages to get a date with Rize Kamishiro, only to find that she is a ghoul. In the extreme series of events that follow, Ken transforms into a hybrid of human and ghoul,...

Japanese animation or “anime” as it is commonly known, has been a major part of the mainstream entertainment since the 80s, when they experienced a boom in production. In the following decades, anime became a global phenomenon, and currently over 430 production companies are involved in an industry that has a total market value of $13.5 billion.
Almost exclusively based on manga, their print equivalent, anime stretch in a plethora of genres, address audiences of all age, sex, and preferences, and entail elaborate animation, despite being in their majority, at least partially hand-drawn. Here is a list with some of the best series in the category.
Just a few notes though. Each title represents the whole franchise, for example, the Monogatari title, includes Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari, the Evangelion one the remake etc. The descriptions and videos of those titles will be paradigms of the whole franchise. The list does not include films, just series.

Japanese live action movies tend to be a hit or miss. Depending on the directorial take, emotional balance of the script, and the actors cast, it can be worthy of endless praises and awards such as the recently concluded “Rurouni Kenshin” trilogy. Otherwise, it can end up as a movie better forgotten such as the infamous Hollywood adaptation of a widely popular series, “Dragonball Evolution.”
While news of live action films may make some of us cringe in their anticipated cheesiness and possible inferior quality, the chances of seeing our beloved manga and anime characters come to life are often slim. The Raid and The Raid 2: Berandal are arguably two of the best martial arts films to emerge in the last decade or so according to many fans of the genre. So when the director, Gareth Evans, praises the fight choreography of another martial arts film, it's probably a good idea to take notice. If I can echo Evans' sentiments, calling the live-action Rurouni Kenshin trilogy the best live-action adaptation of shōnen manga to date will probably elcit little to no argument. Still, it's nice to have validation from Evans as well. God damn the action in Rurouni Kenshin is fucking beautiful. As we say sayonara to 2014 it's time to take a look back on the films that lit up the Japanese cinematic landscape over the past year. Dominating the box-office top ten was the usual mix of animation (including two entries for robo-cat Doraemon, one for Detective Conan, Studio Ghibli's latest and mega-hit Frozen sitting confidently above all) and manga adaptations (and sequels at that, Thermae Romae 2 and Rurouni Kenshin's two part epic finale) that have been the key money makers in recent years. Only two of these make it into the following list as we shine a light over the length and breadth of last year's film scene to find some of its highlights.Looking back over my list it would seem one of...

Wild Tales helmer Damián Szifrón calls Warner Bros International’s Evp of Europe & Latin America Distribution, Monique Esclavissat, the “godmother” of his film. The exec was responsible for the studio coming aboard the project at script stage, releasing it in Argentina and ultimately across Latin America. Esclavissat in turn calls Szifrón, “the whole package. He writes amazingly well and understands the human psyche.” So how did these two get together on the now Oscar-shortlisted film (see trailer below) which has become the biggest local title in Argentine history with $18M there and a combined $28.3M in the Warner markets so far?

By this stage, the humble tale of the first film and the bombastic masterfully shot darkness of the second film should prepare you for what is in store in Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends. Namely, a lot of exposition, happenstance and meandering until the final utterly jaw dropping fight sequence. Facing facts, it is clear that fans are here for the long haul; to just spend time with Kenshin and his cronies in this period is justification enough for another film.It can be argued that films two and three could have been combined to create a much more powerful experience, but this would be discounting all the additional story adapted from the manga, delving into Kenshin's psyche and reasoning. Like it or not, the overlong...

Bill Ireton, President and Representative Director of Warner Entertainment Japan is to step down from his post in March. Ireton has been with Warner Bros for 26 years and has been instrumental in its Japanese operations, including several successful local-language films. Millard Ochs will take over as head of the studio’s Japanese business and will begin working with Ireton in December.
This year will be Warner Entertainment Japan’s most profitable since 2009. While box office in Japan for imports has dropped somewhat over the past few years, local movies are riding high. Warner produced late-2014 box office hits Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno and Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, which together are expected to gross nearly $90M.
Along with the Rurouni movies, Ireton shepherded such films as 2010′s Saigo No Chushingura, 2011′s Paradise Kiss, 2013′s The Straw Shield and Yurusarezarumono, and this year’s Kurohitsuji. Initially, Ireton established a...

Tokyo International Film Festival’s ‘Seven Samurai’ directors compared the restrictive studio-controlled filmmaking environment of modern-day Japan to the golden age of Akira Kurosawa at a talk event on Sunday.
For this year’s edition, the festival has selected seven directors, who have achieved a degree of international recognition, to promote Japanese cinema to the world. Three of the seven attended the talk event: Keishi Otomo, who has directed two hit films based on the Rurouni Kenshin manga series; Takashi Yamazaki, whose Parasyte is closing the festival; and Lee Sang-il, whose credits include the Japanese remake of Unforgiven.
The other four ‘Samurai’ are Takashi Miike (13 Assassins), Tetsuya Nakashima (Confessions), Eiichiro Hasumi (Umizaru series) and Daihachi Yoshida, whose Pale Moon is the only Japanese film in Tiff’s competition section. The event was followed by a screening of Kurosawa’s 1954 Seven Samurai.

Annabelle edged out Gone Girl this weekend internationally, pulling in $28.1M compared to $26.89M that the Ben Affleck thriller scooped up. Annabelle is now tracking 6% ahead of The Conjuring at the same point in its run. The Conjuring went onto to gross $180.6M overseas for a worldwide total of $318M when it bowed last year. For market by market breakouts, see below. Also added are finals for The Judge, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hercules and Relatos Salvajes.

3Rd Update, Monday, 3:25Pm Pt: The majors — Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. — have updated their weekend estimates which are now reflected throughout the story. Some dips from what was originally reported yesterday among Sony and Paramount’s titles, but nothing too earth-shattering. While Gone Girl barely notched No. 1 with roughly $400K more than Annabelle stateside, $37.5M to $37.1M respectively; their spread at the overseas B.O. is wider in their weekend takes with the David Fincher film grabbing $24.5M and The Conjuring spinoff taking $20.7M for the weekend. However, Annabelle has a leg up on Gone Girl since it opened in Russia last weekend, hence the horror film’s total cume is $23.6M, $887K short of Gone Girl’s foreign take. Next weekend, the spooky doll film and the missing chick pic will pull each other’s hair in France and Spain where they bow against each other.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened in second place at the Japanese box office this weekend in its final major market launch. The 20th Century Fox film has done well in various international markets. With $1.9 million (¥21 million), it dragged way behind the $3.8 million (¥41.8 million) that Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, the final part of a samurai sword-fighting trilogy directed by Keishi Otomo, took in its second weekend on top. The Japan Film Society held its 4th annual La EigaFest from September 12-14. "Eiga" means film in Japanese, and the EigaFest introduces American audiences to some of the best films from Japan. With a film lineup of 16 feature-length films and 5 competition shorts, EigaFest was the best way for me as a newcomer to enter the world of Japanese cinema!
The first movie I watched was a psychological thriller called Genome Hazard. With a South Korean Director and a Japanese cast, parts of the film were both spoken in Korean and Japanese. Genome Hazard had an intriguing premise, fascinating characters, and plot twist after plot twist that really racked my brains.
I interviewed Melvina Sato, who grew up in the States but immerses herself in Japanese culture all the same. This was her second year as a moviegoer for the La EigaFest. She spoke about the difference between Hollywood and Japanese cinema.

4th Update, Monday, 2:43 Pm Pt: Who was No. 1 this weekend in China? It’s just not clear. Although Warner Bros reported $7.7M this afternoon for Into The Storm, Fox reported $7.64M for Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and it looks like Expendables 3 ended up with $7.5M (according to Rentrak). But China reporting on box office is always a bit sketchy and numbers tend to fluctuate, which may be why another final total for Into The Storm shows it pulled in only $7.16M. Warners is sticking by its $7.7M number (which includes previews). So, to be fair to both parties, it’s really too close to call.
Final grosses are in for Guardians Of The Galaxy and other films including The Maze Runner (which bows in the states next weekend), The Boxtrolls (which won’t bow until September 26 in the U.S.), Dolphin Tale 2, Lucy, Finding Fanny (which...

Satoh Takeru's wandering samurai returns in a sequel that improves considerably on the enjoyable first feature while setting the scene for the soon to follow finale. The first film's strength was its high production value and visually exciting action scenes that really put it above many other manga adaptations that are so frequently hampered by TV aesthetics and distractingly awful CGI. Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno impresses from the stunning opening onwards as it attempts to tell a much grander story with a marked step-up in characterization and a darker tone. Setting the tone, we begin with returning character Saitoh, the chain-smoking captain of the new government's police forces as they closes in on fearsome renegade Shishio ( Fujiwara Tatsuya). The hapless police are slaughtered in...

3Rd Update, 9:02 Pm Pt: International box office was even with last weekend across the Top 10 studio releases with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes the big gorilla thanks to a strong China opening. Lucy was also in on the action again this frame with a cumulative $31.2M in Universal and EuropaCorp territories. Compared to last year, the session was up 39%. Players at that time included Elysium, One Direction: This Is Us and The Conjuring, with Monsters University adding another $10M in China.
Along with Apes this weekend in China, How To Train Your Dragon 2 was a strong performer and is expected to take the No. 2 spot with $6.3M in frame 3. After a period that saw a focus on boosting local movies, the market is now getting a steady influx of Hollywood titles – Expendables 3 opens there tomorrow (Monday) and Into The Storm blows in on Sept 12. The live action adaptations of hugely popular manga and anime series Rurouni Kenshin have been positively tearing up the Japanese box office charts and it's not hard at all to see why. Part two? Also a huge hit. Part three? That releases September 13th and, yep, the freshly released - and English subtitled - trailer promises a truly epic finale. This is just pure entertainment.
