A star and a title of Armando Iannucci’s next film project have both emerged, according to World Of Reel.
Ever a busy bee, The Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci, currently experiencing a late-career shift into playwriting, is apparently working on a new film.
According to World Of Reel, the film’s name is Growth, with Riz Ahmed attached to star. The synopsis apparently reads as follows:
“A tech drama following the founder of a Snapchat-like social media platform, who races to deal with the company’s exponential growth and devastating leak of users’ private content.”
Iannucci’s first foray into playwriting, Pandemonium, opened at the Soho Theatre in London on the 1st of December. Charting the last few years of calm and uneventful government in the UK, the satirist is also working on a stage adaptation of Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove for a West End debut in 2024.

With individual notices for “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” and an ensemble bid for the former likely coming her way, Julia Garner is poised to pick up more Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in 2023 than any other performer. Being singled out for her turns on both Netflix series would not only make the 28-year-old the ninth dual TV contender in SAG Awards history, but also the youngest person in general to ever be individually nominated by the guild for multiple performances at once.
Garner’s work as the morally complex criminal Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” has already brought her two SAG Award nominations each for Best TV Drama Ensemble and Best TV Drama Actress (2019 and 2021). According to Gold Derby’s predictions, she is effectively running fifth in both races this year, with “The Crown” cast and its new star, Imelda Staunton, being the respective frontrunners. Daniel Radcliffe is opening up about getting a lot of support from his parents when he first started too pursue a career as an actor.
The actor — who stars in the forthcoming parody biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” — recently sat down with Et, and was joined by co-star Evan Rachel Wood and director Eric Appel.
In the film, Radcliffe portrays the famed accordion-toting parody musician, who — in the context of the over-the-top and largely fictitious story — was told by his parents at a young age to give up on his dreams and stop being himself.
For Radcliffe, however, this was about as far from his own experience as a young dreamer as possible.

‘Rings of Power’ Star Morfydd Clark Fainted When She Was Cast in Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series
Morfydd Clark was at the Toronto International Film Festival promoting “The Personal History of David Copperfield” when she was told she was cast as Galadriel in the upcoming Amazon series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
“I found out and then I went to a screening and Q&a for ‘David Copperfield,” Clark told me Monday night at the “Rings of Power” premiere at Culver Studios. “I suddenly realized what a big deal it was for me, and I passed out during the Q&a. I was caught by a lovely security guard.”
Set thousands of years before the “Lord of the Rings” films, Clark plays the same character portrayed by Cate Blanchett on the big screen.
“I knew I was auditioning for an elf but I didn’t know which one,” Clark recalled. “So me and my sister went mad trying to figure it out. I...

High-profile figures were rallying behind the beleaguered BBC yesterday after reports emerged that the UK government plans to freeze the licence fee for two years and scrap it entirely in 2027.
Led by the likes of Armando Iannucci, Gary Lineker, Hugh Grant and Lucy Prebble, a backlash erupted after Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries tweeted a Daily Mail article featuring the news accompanied by a tweet reading: “The license fee announcement will be the last. The days of the elderly being threatened with prison sentences are over. Time now to discuss and debate new ways of funding, supporting and selling great British content.”
The BBC is in the midst of negotiating the next five years of the current £159.50 ($218) annual fee and has been clear that anything less than its aim of having the fee continue to rise with inflation will lead to huge cuts to its output and redundancies.

Christopher Nolan’s commitment to the theatrical experience continues: Regal Cinemas posted a photo of Nolan and his wife (and longtime producer) Emma Thomas, both wearing masks, at the Regal Irvine Spectrum in California. Deadline reported that Nolan was at the theater to watch the Sony-released romantic comedy “The Broken Hearts Gallery.” The week prior, Nolan was reportedly at the theater to check out Armando Iannucci’s Searchlight offering, “The Personal History of David Copperfield.”
“The Broken Hearts Gallery” and “David Copperfield” are two of the few new releases that have opened theatrically amid the pandemic along with Nolan’s own “Tenet,” “The New Mutants,” and “Unhinged.” However, about 30 percent of theaters remain closed in the U.S., including those in top-grossing markets such as New York and Los Angeles.
Audiences remain resistant to returning: “Broken Hearts Gallery” opened to $1.125 million and a $500 per-theater average, while Warner Bros. “Tenet...

I am (re) Born: Iannucci Condenses a Dickens Masterpiece with Contemporary Aims
“It’s in vain to recall the past, unless it works some influence upon the present,” is perhaps the most fitting quote from the actual text of Charles Dicken’s classic 1850 serial-turned-novel adapted by Armando Iannucci as The Personal History of David Copperfield. The original title, of course, is not the only necessary item condensed from the 600 page text, and is one of several notable elements from Iannucci’s version, who brings his “Veep” scribe Simon Blackwell along for the ride.
More often than note, this particular Dickens text is either treated to a wholly abridged television version (such as notable offerings from Delbert Mann and Peter Medak in decades past) or, more often, almost always presented as a television mini-series.…...

You might think that Charles Dickens would be resistant to the Armando Iannucci treatment, which so far has resulted in a string of vicious political satires that raised the insult to the level of art: the British TV show “The Thick of It” and subsequent movie “In the Loop”; its American cousin “Veep,” which he created and ran for four seasons; and most recently “The Death of Stalin,” with the vicious and inept Russian politicians of the 1950s seemingly every bit as Iannuccian as Selina Meyer or the blowhards from “In the Loop.”
But Dickens’ “David Copperfield,” the novel on which Iannucci’s “The Personal History if David Copperfield” is based? How can that work in the hands of the delightfully profane Scottish writer-director?

After making its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield is ready to hit theaters. Searchlight Pictures is debuting the reimagining of the Charles Dickens’ classic starring Dev Patel in physical theaters (remember those?). To be more specific, the film will open in over 1,350 theaters across the U.S. and Canada with an expansion on September 4. David Copperfield is the first film Searchlight Pictures has released in theaters since Wendy in late February, a month before the pandemic caused box offices to shutter.

Of all the calamity exhibition needs right now as the industry tries to reopen during a pandemic is a hurricane.
Box office analysts are divided on Hurricane Laura’s impact as new fare including 20th Century Studios/Disney’s The New Mutants, Searchlight’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, Uar/Orion’s Bill & Ted Face the Music and Picturehouse’s Fatima try to resuscitate the box office. Some believe the storm, which made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast late Wednesday, won’t have an impact at all, while others think it could hurt the South — a box office area in the midst of reawakening.
Right now, Cinemark is planning closures in Louisiana (Lake Charles) and Texas, with Star Cinemas closing cinemas in Hurricane Laura’s Lone Star state zone. The storm has been downgraded to a Category 1, but about...

It’s been a long year for the film, “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” After a warm reception at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the comedic re-imagining of Charles Dickens’ classic story seemed poised to have a great run in theaters earlier in 2020. Then the pandemic hit and Searchlight had to quickly change plans for the release. Now, almost a full year after its world premiere, ‘David Copperfield’ is finally arriving in theaters.

It seems strange to imagine that in this, of all years, our top satirist of all things political, Armando Iannucci, has chosen to make an earnest and charming new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield. But here we are. Perhaps the sheer horror of exposing the absurdity of modern politics in films and series like In The Loop, The Thick of It, The Death of Stalin, and the nearly perfect Veep left Iannucci so spiritually depleted that he had to find solace in something wholesome again.
Don’t get me wrong: The Personal History of David Copperfield still tackles Dickens’ persistent themes of class, privilege, poverty, and human rights, although in far less scathing fashion than Iannucci is known for. And in choosing to cast the film in colorblind fashion–the title character is played by brown actor Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), for starters–Iannucci has subtly modernized it while...

The trick to crafting a don’t-miss film out of Charles Dickens’ 1850 novel David Copperfield is to get someone who isn’t afraid to be irreverent in the director’s chair. And, presto, here’s Armando Iannucci, the political satirist behind the profanity-filled delights of Veep, In the Loop and The Death of Stalin, cutting this literary doorstop into pieces. It proves Iannucci’s theory that the Victorian-era author had a comic side, with a twist of Monty Python-level absurdity.

Remember when July was going to be the month when everything would be back to normal? Tenet and Mulan would play theaters, summer movie season would be in full swing, and we could start to put this whole Covid-19 catastrophe behind us? [Cue laughter that quickly turns into sobbing] Sadly, that hasn’t been the case — and if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that no release date is set in stone. That doesn’t mean, however, that there won’t be plenty to watch before Labor Day weekend. Like, for example, a new Seth Rogen comedy,...

Disney has reconfigured its theatrical release schedule again as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage throughout the country, with the company yanking or delaying some films while leaving others in place — at least for now.
The first, not totally unexpected move was pulling Mulan off its August 21 release date. Originally set to arrive this past spring and then this month, the live-action remake of the animated classic was moved to August after the first major wave of the pandemic. Now, according to Deadline, it’s been removed from next month’s calendar and does not currently have a release date.
Mulan’s disappearance from its August arrival makes sense in the wake of Warner Bros. Pictures pulling Tenet from its premiere date a week earlier — although both will come as a blow to AMC Theaters, which just shifted its reopening plans from later this month to mid-August. Elisabeth Moss and Odessa Young in ‘Shirley.’
After The Invisible Man racked up more than $US125 million at cinemas worldwide – the bulk of it before the pandemic struck – Elisabeth Moss’ latest thriller Shirley had to face the realities of the pandemic-blighted cinema landscape.
Madman Entertainment launched the Josephine Decker-directed movie, which won the Us Dramatic Special Jury Award for Auteur Filmmaking at Sundance, on just 25 screens last weekend.
While the 4-day gross was a modest $30,000, that should be viewed in the context of a depressed theatrical market in which only 240 cinemas are operating and most tickets are half price.
The shutdown of Melbourne’s cinemas alone has robbed the market of 26 per cent of its normal takings. Commenting on the closure, Palace Cinemas CEO Benjamin Zeccola said last week: “A painful blow has been dealt to Melbournians, particularly people in entertainment, who are injured more than most.
“However, we will overcome this challenge.

Korean hit #Alive kicked up another $2.2M this weekend, holding well throughout the mid-weeks, but with an overall 63% Friday-Saturday-Sunday dip from the comparable weekend days last session. The timely thriller that’s set against the backdrop of a city in lockdown due to a virus has now grossed $11M. It’s a continued indication that moviegoers want something new, and in cases of a strong local industry, they’re also enjoying homegrown fare. Still, not much is going to rock the international box office until Hollywood starts releasing fresh titles.
A question has been raised as to whether the studios could release big new movies overseas without the biggest domestic cities given the situation in the U.S. is still dire. While international makes up the lion’s share of receipts (73% in 2019), a finance source explains that an event picture generally goes out on more than 30,000 screens worldwide — those screens are hardly available at present.

Disney has announced a round of release date changes, including another title, the Thea Sharrock-directed action/CGI hybrid pic The One and Only Ivan, which will go straight to the studio’s streaming service on Aug. 21.

The pic is based on Katherine Applegate’s book, which won numerous awards upon its publication in 2013, including the Newbery Medal.
Pic follows Ivan, a 400-pound silverback gorilla, who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured,...

Screen Media Ventures have moved up the digital release date of Hope Gap after having its theatrical window cut short due to the pandemic. The pic, which was picked up Screen Media and Roadside Attractions last May and had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, was released in limited theaters on March 5 with a planned spring theatrical expansion. The William Nicholson-directed romance drama starring Annette Bening, Josh O’ Connor, and Bill Nighy will now be available on digital platforms on May 8.
Described as a story of survival, the pic follows the unraveling of three lives, through stages of shock, disbelief and anger, to a place of hope. Grace (Bening) and Edward (Nighy), married for 29 years, live in a small seaside town near a cove under the cliffs called Hope Gap. Disney was really trying to avoid pushing back the release of Black Widow, their next big Marvel movie, but the announcement of many major U.S. cinema chains’ temporary closure in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, has forced the corporation’s hand. Originally set to hit theaters on May 1st, Black Widow has been pulled from the release calendar, with no new release date set as of this time.
According to Variety, Black Widow isn’t the only upcoming release Disney has just pulled from its release calendar. The Personal History of David Copperfield (a Searchlight film) and The Woman in the Window (under the 20th Century umbrella) have also been added to the list of postponed films, which already included Mulan, New Mutants, and Antlers. In the wake of the two biggest movie chains, AMC and Regal, shutting down for possibly close to two months, Disney reports today that their prized summer starter, Marvel’s Black Widow, is delayed until further notice. The Scarlett Johansson movie was scheduled to go day and date around the world on May 1.
This doesn’t come as surprise, and was unfortunately forecasted by many in the distribution sphere following MGM jumping the release of No Time to Die from Easter weekend April 10 to Thanksgiving this year.

Daniel Radcliffe began acting when he was 6 years old, playing a monkey in a school play. By the time he was 12, he was an international movie star, taking on the role of Harry Potter in a series of film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s books. He went on to portray everything from a World War I soldier killed in battle to a talking corpse with digestive issues to a political prisoner. Just take a look at his impressive body of work.

The comedy writer, 53, who gave us The Thick of It and David Copperfield, on Oscar nominations, lucky breaks and why we’ll miss the BBC when it’s gone
The label ‘satirist’ is too grand for what I do. I’m a comedy writer who sometimes does politics. Satire to me is bigger and well above my station – it doesn’t only critique the world, but also offers answers. I’m afraid to say I have no solutions.
I left school at 16 with mental health problems instead of qualifications. I was a happy child until 11, on our south London Peabody estate, but at my secondary school it was only football and fighting that were valued. I gave up and became socially phobic. I was put on medication for anxiety and depression.

Dev Patel stars as the legendary writer in The Personal History of David Copperfield, in theaters May 8th. The clip arrives on the same day as the trailer for Patel’s other upcoming film, The Green Knight.
Based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens and directed by Veep creator Armando Iannucci, the trailer features Patel’s Copperfield recalling his life from an early age in Victorian England. “My boyhood days seem now like a scarcely believable fiction,” he says, as scenes of him as a child working in a factory flash across the screen.

Right on the heels of another trailer starring Dev Patel that released today — “The Green Knight,” from director David Lowery — Searchlight Pictures has revealed a new look at “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Patel stars as the title character in writer/director Armando Iannucci’s (“Veep”) revisionist take on the classic Charles Dickens bildungsroman. It’s cowritten by Iannucci collaborator Simon Blackwell. After a Toronto International Film Festival premiere back in fall 2019, Searchlight Pictures finally will release “The Personal History of David Copperfield” in the United States on May 8, 2020. Take a look at the new trailer below.
In rewriting Dickens’ 1849 tome about the coming of age of a man from youth to adulthood, from impoverished orphan to decorated Victorian author, Iannucci puts a quirky spin on the kind of satire he developed in blistering, politically charged series “The Thick of It” and “Veep,” and films such as “In the Loop...

If you wanted to imagine how “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci might put his own farcical spin on the Charles Dickens classic for “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” look no further than a scene of Ben Whishaw and Tilda Swinton slapping each other back and forth.
The first trailer for Searchlight Pictures’ “The Personal History of David Copperfield” shows a crowd-pleasing, silly and satirical period piece starring Dev Patel as the classic title character. And the film also assembles some of Iannucci’s other favorites from “In the Loop” and “Avenue 5,” including Hugh Laurie and Peter Capaldi.
“London is full of wonders and wickedness, and it’s our David to go wherever we choose,” Capaldi says with a smile. “Hold on not down there. Creditors make that road impossible. Two tailors and a most unreasonable muffin man.”

It’s not easy to adapt an iconic work of literature, let alone make your interpretation of it not only stand out but feel fresh among the legions of others in existence. However, after a career in cutting edge satire and being involved in crafting some of the very best characters in British comedy, from Alan Partridge to Malcolm Tucker, we should all know better than to ever doubt the talents of one Armando Iannucci. And to that point, his funny, heartwarming and eccentric take on Charles Dickens’ landmark “David Copperfield” is an irresistible concoction.

Supervillain origin story crowding out better films, while the lack of diversity in the acting categories is infuriating
The Bafta nominations have been announced and the list contains an innovation for which insiders have been calling for years: a new category for casting directors, whose work and years of amassed contacts and expertise is so important and yet often overlooked. Maybe the most notable nominee here is Sarah Crowe, for her contribution to Armando Iannucci’s sparkling new version of Dickens’ David Copperfield, with its terrific, diverse ensemble cast.
A nice pick, though it’s very disappointing that Copperfield didn’t rate a mention anywhere else; this is just the kind of smart take on the classics that Bafta should be recognising. There is also a lack of diversity on the acting lists, which has infuriated many. It isn’t quite true to say that Bafta has not recognised Awkwafina,...

“Goodbye Christopher Robin” features Dohmnall Gleeson as A.A. Milne, who was a notable playwright in 1920s England, but found himself at a crossroads in his career. Moving to the country, he began to find inspiration in the imagination of his son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston as the younger Cr) and created the books of Winnie the Pooh. The book was a runaway best seller – much to the pleasure of his flapper wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) and the consternation of the boy’s nanny (Kelly Macdonald) – but a torture to the actual Christopher Robin, who couldn’t understand the family’s sudden fame.

There are a lot of great voices. The ones that capture you with their signature sound, whether it’s Garrison Keller leading A Prairie Home Companion, Morgan Freeman narrating The Shawshank Redemption, Sam Elliott’s drawl in truck commercials, Alan Rickman reading sonnets by William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou reading her own works aloud or actors Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Gambon emoting onstage.
There is also Richard Armitage, whose trademark baritone has spawned a decade-long career in voice work in addition to his celebrated screen and stage roles, which currently includes Kenneth in Roundabout Theatre’s limited Off-Broadway production of Love, Love, Love and Daniel Miller on Epix’s espionage thriller, Berlin Station. (Both the play and season one of the series draw to a close on Sunday, Dec. 18.)
