Black and White Gem

This is one of the most hilarious short movies ever. Every year, the famous Opera Ball in Vienna, Austria (Europe) takes place in the real world. Max Linder (director) and Boris Schafgans (narrator and script) collaborated in this funny send-up of this slightly stuffy event. The idea is as simple as captivating: Instead of filming famous personalities, entering the Opera House in white tie attire, complete with medals and sashes the men, and sparkling gowns the ladies, this film consists of documentary footage showing regular pedestrians in the streets of Vienna, ca. 1988, the time when the film was made. A narrator voice-over announces them with the same aplomb and style of a typical official Opera Ball life-broadcast. The result is genius. The broadcast station of Austria ORF has mostly stayed away from this little gem; further proof of how close this "Opernball" hits to home. A modern classic!
