The questionable cartoon Two by Two may have gotten Howard Post fired from the Paramount cartoon studio
tavm22 November 2009
Just watched this Paramount Modern Madcap cartoon on YouTube as linked from the Cartoon Brew site. In this one, a duck named Quacky Whack is trying to get on Noah's Ark but since he isn't taking someone of his species with him, he cannot get on. So he tries to find a mate...Jerry Beck of the Brew considers this a "drive-in cartoon" which is to him a cartoon that wastes so much time and space that during it, under-12 kids could go to the concession stand while teens could also make out. Can't say I disagree with him as there's nothing remotely funny here what with the choppy animation, lame jokes, and overall questionable taste of making fun of a biblical story. Not that making fun of some sacred religious text can't be hilarious as Monty Python's Life of Brian can attest to but not if the leading character is as obnoxious as the duck here is. It's possibly because of this short's subject matter that got director Howard Post fired as the head of the Paramount cartoon studio. That's too bad because I liked a couple of things he did there that I reviewed on IMDb. Anyway, I do not recommend Two by Two.

I have never laughed so hard, so long.

Danny Kaye's performance as Noah in Two by Two must have made God smile, at least. This play was a creative and humorous interpretation of the great biblical flood and the lives of the people that survived it. The one Carlan word, spoken by Noah, was indispensable. I have never laughed so hard, so long. I will purchase the video or DVD as soon as it appears.
