Canadian director Bruce McDonald has been making weird movies and TV shows for a long time; his 1991 film Highway 61 is a personal fave, as are the 1998 series Twitch City and the 2008 thriller Pontypool. His latest film is Hellions, in which a few people have probably their worst-ever Halloween night when demonic little […]

One of my favourite Canadian filmmakers, Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo, Pontypool) is back at Tiff with his latest film, The Husband. The film stars Maxwell McCabe-Lokos (The Tracey Fragments), as Henry, a man who is left to care for his infant son after his wife is imprisoned for cheating on him with a minor. Tiff describes The Husband as “Slyly funny, with the structure of an Italian sex comedy of the 1960s”. For decades, McDonald has been producing, editing, and directing in both television and film, including Degrassi: The Next Generation, Instant Star, Twitch City and Queer as Folk. He’s also directed music videos for notable bands and eventually set up his own production company, named Shadow Shows. He might not be a household name like David Cronenberg, but his films have gained him considerable critical acclaim, and a cult following over the years. Watch the clip for The Husband below.

This staging of Orson Welles’ notorious 1938 radio drama adaptation of the 1898 novel of the same name by H.G. Wells features a powerhouse cast – Nicholas Campbell, Don McKellar and Marc Bendavid – a live 5-piece band and sound effects by foley artist John Gzowski. Art of Time Ensemble Artistic Director Andrew Burashko directs as well as conducts.

Crowd-sourced music documentaries are hardly new. Many a rock doc over the years has included fan-shot footage, and the Beastie Boys made their own explicitly fan-shot film, Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!, released back in 2006. Now Canadian filmmakers Bruce McDonald and Don McKellar, who collaborated in the past on the very fun Highway 61 and occasionally sublime television show Twitch City, are looking for the help of regular folks to assemble a movie featuring acclaimed Toronto indie band Broken Social Scene. The film, called This Movie is Broken, will have a dramatic story written by McKellar that centers around a couple who attend a Broken Social Scene show, but it will be set in summertime Toronto, as partially shot by fans. McDonald has been getting more experimental over the last few years. Highway 61 ('91) was a kooky, fun road movie written by and starring McKellar, but by the time...

The Canadian indie-rock and indie-film worlds have just collided with potential glorious results. Director Bruce McDonald (Pontypool, Hard Core Logo) has joined forces with frequent collaborator Don McKellar (Last Night, Twitch City and a Tony-winner for writing The Drowsy Chaperone) to create This Movie Is Broken. And yes, as the musically savvy among you may have surmised from the title, the story of the film revolves around a performance by local indie icons Broken Social Scene with sometime member turned huge solo hit Leslie Feist also turning up and bringing Emily Haines of Metric and Amy Millan of Stars along with her.
