For many decades, the four-day Memorial Day weekend has been a banner time for people to flock to movie theaters. While many schools around the country are still in session and people still have work, it’s the official kick-off of the summer for many, which is why studios frequently will grab the weekend for their potential summer tentpoles. In the past 15 years, seven movies have grossed more than 100 million over the four-day weekend, but Steven Spielberg’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” held the holiday weekend record since opening in 1997 until “X-Men: The Last Stand” came along in 2006.
The past two years have seen a far reduced Memorial Day, although last year, “A Quiet Place Part II” and Disney’s “Cruella” showed possible signs of movie theaters returning a few months after the top two markets, New York City and Los Angeles, reopened. The two movies grossed 83.5 million between them over the four-day weekend.

With movie theaters fully back up and running, HBO Max no longer has any major film releases to point to with its list of new releases for May 2022. That’s alright though as the streamer is leaning into the HBO side of its branding to offer up some fun TV releases.
The biggest HBO Max original this month is undoubtedly the return of Hacks on May 12. The first season of this comedy starred Jean Smart as a venerated Vegas comedy and Hannah Einbinder as her new millennial assistant. The first batch of episodes was excellent and even won an Emmy or two for its troubles and now season 2 will look to keep up the good vibes.
Premiering on May 15, is The Time Traveler’s Wife. This series adaptation of the 2003 novel (which in turn became a a 2009 movie) keeps up with two star-crossed lovers who can never quite make the timing work…...

Paramount is putting its Rugrats movie in timeout. The studio said today that it has pulled the Nick TV adaptation from its schedule after originally setting a January 29, 2021, release date.
Taking over that weekend slot is Rumble, the toon from Paramount Animation and WWE Studios that is set in a world where monster wrestling is a global sport and monsters are superstar athletes. Will Arnett, Terry Crews, Geraldine Viswanathan and WWE stars Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns lead the voice cast for Rumble, which moves back six months from its planned July 31, 2020, date.
Rugrats was announced in July 2018 as a live-action pic with CGI characters as part of a franchise revival that also includes a new Nick TV series. Paramount, which didn’t cite a reason for grounding the film, released three Rugrats features in the late 1990s and early 2000s: The Rugrats Movie (1998), Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (2000) and...

Highlights include “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” on Oct. 11, which follows fugitive Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) as he runs from his captors, the law and his past, and Paul Rudd’s existential comedy “Living With Yourself,” in which a spa treatment promising to make him a better person ends up creating a second, better version of himself.
On Oct. 25, Eddie Murphy’s feature “Dolemite Is My Name” finds the comedy legend portraying the real life Rudy Ray Moore, described as “a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.”

Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.
Two features with awards buzz are coming to Netflix just weeks after their debuts at the Toronto film festival: “The Laundromat,” Steven Soderbergh‘s wry satire about international financial fraud that showcases Oscar darling Meryl Streep; and “Dolemite Is My Name,” a vehicle for Eddie Murphy who portrays 1970s comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

A few days back, news broke that Mark Mothersbaugh had signed on to score Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, which is currently filming in Australia with Taika Waititi (Hunt For The Wilderpeople) at the helm. Chris Hemsworth & Tom Hiddleston are set to return as Thor & Loki and they'll be joined by 3x Academy Award-nominee Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and 2x Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett as the villainous Hela. He'll be the latest composer to tackle the God of Thunder, following Patrick Doyle & Brian Tyler, who composed the scores for the first two installments, respectively. Mothersbaugh is of course best known as the lead singer, co-founder, & keyboardist of the New Wave band Devo. His prominent film scores include Happy Gilmore, The Rugrats Movie (and sequels), Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (1 & 2), 21 Jump Street (1 & 2), Hotel Transylvania (1 & 2), The Lego Movie, Pitch Perfect 2, and Vacation. So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Sometimes it's hard to know whether Kevin Smith is being serious or just trolling us, but if a recent tweet of his is to be believed, he is going to be making movies, plural, pretty much nonstop for the next couple years. First upc Clerks III, which Smith will begin shooting sometime in May. https://twitter.com/ThatKevinSmith/status/576163254717673472 There's a bit more to unpack there, but first, let's talk about Clerks III. I was a big fan of Clerks in my teen years, as was pretty much every other friend of mine with any interest in movies, but I never even got around to seeing Clerks II -- I'm the worst, I know. The sequel came out right around the time I began to shift gears toward the work of Judd Apatow, who ironically, like Smith, has seen the critical acclaim for his work diminish a bit after a...

Christine Cavanaugh, an Annie Award-winning voice actor who brought to life such characters as Babe the Sheep Pig, Chuckie on Rugrats and the title kid in Dexter’s Laboratory, has died. She was 51. The Utah native died December 22, according to the Los Angeles Times; no cause of death was reported.
Cavanaugh started out as an actress in the late 1980s, appearing on such shows as Cheers and Empty Nest. In 1991 she landed a regular gig as the voice of Goslyn Mallard on Darkwing Duck, appearing in more than 70 episodes. Probably her most famous TV gig began that same year as she voiced Chuckie Finster, the scaredy-cat oldest baby on Nickelodeon’s Rugrats. Cavanaugh played the character for 135-plus episodes until 2002, when Nancy Cartwright took over. She also played Chuckie in The Rugrats Movie (1998).

Released back in 2007, director Kevin Lima's Disney-fairytale-come-to-life Enchanted was an absolutely massive smash hit. Made for $85 million, it dominated at the U.S. box office with an eventual total of $127 million, and its global gross after being released internationally was brought to a stellar $340 million. It was only a matter of time before Disney began working on a sequel, and while there was a false start back in 2010, this time looks like it could be the real deal. According to Deadline, Enchanted 2 is finally moving forward and has brought aboard two new writers to get it closer to the finish line. Sources have told the site that J. David Stem and David N. Weiss have been tasked by Disney to craft a new story following up with the characters from the original. The two writers began their big screen careers writing the script for The Rugrats Movie back in...

I have no qualms about admitting that I absolutely loved Enchanted. Filled with incredibly catchy musical numbers (“That’s How You Know” and “Happy Working Song” spring most to mind), hilarious characters, a remarkably self-aware script and a winningly upbeat spirit, it was one of the most plainly fun movies of 2007.
Of course, when the film came out, there was talk of a sequel, but nothing ever really came together. As a big fan of Enchanted, I thought maybe that was a good thing. After all, the story wasn’t exactly conducive to a follow-up, and I didn’t want there to be any chance that an inferior sequel could in any way diminish the spell cast by the original. In a post-Frozen world, however, it appears that there’s new interest in Enchanted 2.

From Japanese anime to Disney via stop-motion, here are 18 animated films that are mystifyingly unavailable on Blu-ray...
Not all movies need to be seen in HD, but if there's one type of filmmaking that regularly benefits from the Blu-ray format, it's animation. Let us cite one example at random: My Neighbour Totoro. Until fairly recently, the only copy we had on the shelf was an early, imported version on DVD, which was grainy and a little washed-out.
When Studio Canal issued Totoro on Blu-ray in 2012, the difference in image quality was little short of a revelation: Hayao Miyazaki's colours and fluid lines positively shimmered. In short, it was like seeing this fresh, sun-drenched film again for the first time.

Cue up “I Believe I Can Fly.”
Last month, there was a live reading of the 1996 Michael Jordan/Looney Tunes “masterpiece” Space Jam, featuring Seth Green, Danielle Fishel, Ben Schwartz, Nick Kroll and many more. Unfortunately, the whole thing isn’t available online — but Funny or Die has released a 10-minute highlight reel, which clearly proves that the comedians showed up ready to (space) jam. Sadly, there is no surprise Bill Murray appearance.
Led by Blake Griffin as Jordan, the footage from the reading is intercut with interviews in which the cast explains their memories of the movie; Kroll’s...

The new millennium brought with it an eclectic range of hit films. Hong Kong action director John Woo brought us Mission: Impossible II, the most profitable film of the year at the box office. Ridley Scott enjoyed one of the biggest critical and financial successes of his career with Gladiator, while Robert Zemeckis created a memorable drama with Tom Hanks and a ball named Wilson in Cast Away.
From a comic book movie standpoint, 2000 was also a key year. X-Men not only established a successful film franchise which is still going, with X-Men: Days Of Future Past out next year, but also headed up a wave of big-budget Marvel adaptations which shows no sign of slowing down.

Arlene Klasky and her partner, Gábor Csupó, formed Klasky Csupo, Inc. in 1981. While they have worked on numerous projects over the years, and still continue to do so, they are perhaps best known for the creation of the Emmy Award-winning Rugrats and The Wild Thornberries. With big screen box office hits such as The Rugrats Movie (1998), it's unlikely that you will be unfamiliar with the Klasky's work, while many of you (myself included) will have grown up watching shows such as those mentioned above. The studio is now working on two new digital comic books, Ollie Mongo Adventures in the Apocalypse and Splaat!. Recently, I was able to quiz Arlene Klasky on all of the above and much more (including the online debut of never-before-seen animated pilots). Links to where you can see all of these can be found in the interview below. Firstly, can you tell us about the...

This singer-turned-actor first debuted on the music scene in 1989 and was a dominant force throughout the 90s, crossing over several music genres and winning multiple Grammy Awards. His acting credits include The Rugrats Movie (Newborn Baby voice), Precious and the just-released Hunger Games. Here are five things you may not know about Lenny Kravitz.
1. Born Leonard Albert Kravitz on May 26, 1964 in New York City. His father was filmmaker and NBC TV news producer Seymour "Sy" Kravitz, while his mother was actress Roxie Roker, who was best known for playing the role of Helen Willis on the 1970s hit sitcom The Jeffersons.
2. Married to The Cosby Show star Lisa Bonet from 1987-1993 and they have a daughter together named Zoe.
3. Told Maxim magazine in 2008 that he planned to remain celibate until he remarried. But last year he backed away from the claim, telling Details: "I'm not going to deal with that question. I said it...

SXSW is usually an incredibly streamlined and well-organized film festival, with everything working with the smoothness of a Swiss watch. But yesterday must have been an "off" day, as a panel centered around beloved film composer and Devo member Mark Mothersbaugh started about ten minutes late and (for some reason) a retrospective video for Mothersbaugh, produced back in 2004, played for another 20 minutes. Meaning that the tight hour that was allotted for the composer was actually more like 30 minutes. And while we wished it were longer, it was worth sticking around for the stories Mothersbaugh shared.
His early career in Devo was inspired by film technology, he recalled. Mothersbaugh said that he was a student at Kent State and in the same anti-Vietnam protest that claimed the lives of several of his peers, and that Devo was partially a gonzo response to that. But the real crux of the band was formulated a few years later.

Paramount is set to go it alone with animated movies, which might just leave DreamWorks Animation without a distributor. It might also get us Rango 2…
Earlier this year, you might remember that we were just a little bit enthusiastic for the release of Gore Verbinski's Rango. For our money, it's still the best animated movie of the year, and further than that, one of 2011's best films. Not everyone seemed to agree, but the film still picked up around $240m worldwide. That's not enough for a profit just yet, but given the theme and content of the movie, that's a solid result.
And it seems to have whetted Paramount's appetite for more. The studio is in the process now of setting up its own animated movie division, following the likes of Universal, Fox and Sony in doing so. Paramount will be looking to follow what Universal has done, in particular.

Much like the books they’re based on, the casting for The Hunger Games has already jolted its fans with some unexpected twists. While there had been some speculation that rocker Lenny Kravitz would step in the role of Katniss’ flashy, but friendly, stylist Cinna, most Hg fans had hedged their bets on actor Cillian Murphy. But — and forgive me for this one, PopWatchers — Gary Ross and Co., opted to go Kravitz’s way instead.
I’m sure my initial reaction sounded not unlike a good portion of you (“Really?!?”), but then I remembered Kravtiz’s performance as a male nurse in 2009′s harrowing Precious.

For the past few weeks fans of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games books have kept themselves firmly glued to the film’s Facebook Fan Page in anticipation of new cast announcements.
Lionsgate has chosen to draw out this painfully prolonged process by slowly releasing the names of the actors playing negligible side characters, while keeping some of the more sought after news to themselves.
What people have been waiting for perhaps the most, is the announcement of who will play the film’s audacious fashion extraordinaire, Cinna. Finally in the late hours of Monday night, Lionsgate gave their fans the news they were waiting for. The role of Cinna would henceforth be played by none other than… Lenny Kravitz!?
