German Films celebrated its 70th anniversary at Cannes on Sunday, with its guests looking back but also looking forward.
“It has gotten much better,” Managing Director Simone Baumann told Variety at the event.
“We’ve had Oscar-winning ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ Oscar-nominated ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’ [for best international feature], films by Wim Wenders and with Sandra Hüller! Sure, Wim showed a Japanese movie and Sandra a French one [‘Perfect Days’ and ‘Anatomy of a Fall’], but it doesn’t matter: It’s more ‘mixed’ these days and I am proud of it, to be honest.”
At Cannes, 14 German productions and co-productions have been selected this year, including Match Factory’s main competition offerings “Motel Destino” by Karim Aïnouz – who also attended the bash – and Miguel Gomes’ “Grand Tour.” Run Way Pictures is behind Mohammad Rasoulof’s anticipated “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.”
As festivals get “more competitive,” underlines Baumann, international collabs are here to stay.

Director and producer Tom Tykwer has become managing director of Berlin-based production company X Filme Creative Pool, best known for “Babylon Berlin,” alongside Uwe Schott. Tykwer succeeds Stefan Arndt, one of Germany’s leading producers.
The reorganization of the company’s management is intended to “sharpen the focus on the development and implementation of creative, bold and unusual material for film and television,” according to a statement.
Arndt is leaving at his own request but will remain associated with the company as a producer.
X Filme Creative Pool was founded 30 years ago by Tykwer together with the writers and directors Wolfgang Becker and Dani Levy as well as Arndt. The four founders, who remain shareholders together with Beta Film and Bogey, based themselves on United Artists with the aim of producing sophisticated films with an audience appeal – or, as Variety put it, “intelligent films that audiences want to see.”

German filmmaker Tom Tykwer is taking over as managing director of X Filme Creative Pool, the company he co-founded 30 years ago, replacing partner Stefan Arndt, who is stepping down from the post on his own accord.
Tykwer will head up X Filme together with Uwe Schott, a producer who has been at the Berlin-based outfit since 2009 and has worked on many of the company’s biggest productions, from Cloud Atlas to the TV series Babylon Berlin.
Arndt, whose cinematic resume includes Run Lola Run, The White Ribbon, and Oscar winner Amour, will continue to produce for X Filme and, as a co-founder, remains a shareholder in the company.
In a statement, he said he wanted to withdraw from the daily business of managing X Filme “so that I can concentrate more on producing again. Some exciting projects are already in the making and I’m looking forward to realizing them...

The movie’s pacing plays a major part in its eventual perception by the audience. It gives the filmmakers the freedom of choice whether to stick to the usual narration or to speed up or, on the contrary, slow down the plot progression to create a special impression and to make their movies memorable.
We can recall the fast-paced Trainspotting (1996) or Fight Club (1999), with both of them becoming cultish features, definitive for the whole generation. However, there is a lesser-known 1990’s movie that is also quick to start and to throw a viewer into the heat of its events, appearing to be a brilliant must-watch.
Its plot revolves around the young Lola, who receives a devastating phone call from her boyfriend Manni. It turns out that he lost 100,000 Deutschmarks that he was sent to bring to his gangster boss, and he begs Lola to somehow find the necessary amount of...

Last year’s strikes can take credit for some of this nostalgia: With distributors forced to delay films, theaters are desperate for product. However, desperation is not the only mother of this invention. A24, Neon, and other specialty distributors are treating re-releases as a way to reach younger audiences.
Last year, Neon re-released Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film “Oldboy” to $2.1 million worldwide. At a CinemaCon panel April 8, Neon distribution president Elissa Federoff credited its success to a young audience eager to see it on a big screen for the first time. “What is old is new for these younger audiences,” she said.

Lola better get some new sneakers.
Sony Pictures Classics has announced it will re-release Tom Tykwer’s 1999 German action classic Run Lola Run, in a new 4K restored version, in U.S. cinemas this summer, timed to the 25th anniversary of the movie’s original domestic bow.
Franka Potente stars as the titular athletic Lola in the film, racing to find 100,000 deutsche marks in time to rescue her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) who is in deep with a local gangster. Every choice Lola makes, big or small, changes her ultimate fate. The film is told three times, with three separate endings, an approach that recalls video game aesthetics. Herbert Knaup, Joachim Król and Nina Petri co-star.
Run Lola Run was a sensation when it was first released and grossed more than $7 million in the United States and Canada for SPC, becoming one of the highest-grossing non-English-language films ever at that time.

“Choices, choices…,” says the narrator, a young seamstress, in this strange and striking debut from Freddy Macdonald. A neo-noir in the early Coens tradition, Sew Torn also features a bold tri-part structure in which the heroine, Barbara (Eve Connolly) — like Lola before her in Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run — gets three standalone chances to pursue a different destiny after stumbling on the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong on a quiet country road.
It begins with image of a reel of red cotton, a briefcase and a dead body. This is Barbara, who wonders what we’ll make of her story. Macdonald’s film then loops back to explain who Barbara got here, a tale of chance and coincidence that reshuffles its characters in a way that always surprises,...

Freddy Macdonald’s Sew Torn is a high-stakes crime thriller for everyone that grew up obsessed with choose-your-own-adventure novels. Working through three wildly different timelines, the story follows a mobile seamstress presented with a (truly) life-changing opportunity. After stumbling across a drug deal gone wrong, Barbara (Eve Connolly) is faced with a choice: commit the perfect crime, call the police, or simply drive away. Which would you choose?
Luckily, you’re not left with any lingering questions about what would have happened in either of the three scenarios, because you’re gifted the chance to witness them all! Following the threads of each decision, Sew Torn is divided into nice clean chapters that make for a series of very unfortunate events. In fact, the film opens on the aftermath of each possible timeline, and none look especially promising. It seems each choice leads to ruin but it isn’t the destination that counts,...

The Fast and Furious franchise talks a big game about family but doesn’t seem to care about much besides the action sequences. They just get too chaotic for my taste, but the new film Sixty Minutes is more ordered in its approach to having a frenetic action film that has a genuine familial core. There are a few issues as to how it uses a father-daughter relationship, but ultimately it is a well-crafted action thriller that might feel like Run Lola Run meets Falling Down sans the insane Michael Douglas and the time travel stuff.

Tom Tykwer is coming back to the movies.
The German director of Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas has announced his return to filmmaking with the German drama Das Licht (The Light).
The feature, which has just wrapped principal photography, is described as a portrait of a family “between collapse and new beginnings” and deals with the major issues of our time “in a world that is reeling.”
Das Licht is Tykwer’s first feature film since 2016’s A Hologram for the King, starring Tom Hanks. He has spent the past seven years on TV, co-creating and co-directing, with Henk Handloegten and Achim von Borries, four seasons of the acclaimed and award-winning German historic series Babylon Berlin.

The urge to dazzle can be its own straitjacket, and it’s one that weighs heavily on Meshal Aljaser’s feature debut “Naga.” He aims for a hurtling virtuosity, à la “Run Lola Run,” in depicting a disobedient young Saudi woman’s extreme travails in trying to get home before her strict curfew. But that quarter-century-old German thriller’s simplicity of plot supported its hyperbolic style, while here the writer-director is so preoccupied with camera and editorial calisthenics, nothing else has a chance to come into focus. The flamboyant but hollow results feel like too conscious a calling card for a talent that next time out should embrace some restraint, not to mention substance.

Writer/director Meshal Aljaser’s Naga had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, and we’ve learned today that it’s now coming to Netflix.
Naga will begin streaming exclusively on Netflix Thursday, December 7.
In the Saudi genre film, “Stranded amid Riyadh’s desert dunes, Sarah, a local Saudi girl, escapes heartaches and the vengeance of a vigorous camel after discreetly sneaking out of her parent’s home for a romantic date that landed her astray.”
Adwa Bader, Khalid Bin Shaddad, Amal Alharbi and Yazeed Almajyul star.
Joe Lipsett reviewed Naga for Bloody Disgusting out of TIFF, raving: “Between the virtuoso camerawork and the ticking clock, Naga‘s closest spiritual comparison is the adrenaline rush of Run Lola Run.” Joe’s review continues, “Naga is an incredibly exciting, dynamic thriller featuring an assured performance from lead actress Adwa Bader.

Writer/director Meshal Aljaser’s Naga opens with a moment of shocking violence: in 1970, a man with a gun moves through the halls of a hospital, searching for his pregnant wife. When he finds her, he murders her and the male doctor, incensed that his baby boy wasn’t delivered by a female doctor as he prescribed.
The incident hangs heavy over the entire film – in part because of the random nature of the violence, but more specifically because it is so gendered. Saudi Arabia is a deeply patriarchal society where the rules of men are paramount and the penalties for women who “misbehave” are severe.
This is certainly the experience of Sara (Adwa Bader), the daughter of an affluent and intimidatingly strict man (Khalid Bin Shaddad). In the present day, Sara is gently rebelling however she can: she smokes (discreetly) and she has a secret boyfriend, Saad (Yazeed Almajyul...

When “Unseen” director Yoko Okumura was growing up as a Japanese-American in Minneapolis, the idea of being a director felt completely anathema to her. “Directing was the farthest thing from my mind. My imagination couldn’t go there,” Okumura told TheWrap. “It’s not like I ever saw a Scorsese film and was like, ‘I could be him someday.’ Nobody who looked like me did this job.”
Okumura has used that lack of representation in cinema to cultivate a career as a filmmaker determined to change the paradigm. And it’s paying off, considering she will be making her feature-length directorial debut for Blumhouse with “Unseen,” an intense thriller about Emily, who is kidnapped by her obsessive boyfriend and held captive in the woods. With her glasses smashed in an altercation with her captor, Emily blindly makes a phone call that connects her to a stranger named Sam who might...

For almost 30 years, the Oldenburg Film Festival has been championing a very specific flavor of fiercely independent cinema.
Equally inspired by the New Hollywood genre films of the 1970s and the bootstraps indie cinema of the 1990s, Oldenburg has carved out a niche unlike any of the major international festivals. Instead of playing the same fall festival hits as Cannes, Venice and Toronto, Oldenburg continues to spotlight overlooked or forgotten movies that don’t fit the industry’s familiar categories.
For the 29th festival, which runs Sept. 14-18, The Hollywood Reporter took a look back at five indie gems from Oldenburg’s weird and wonderful history.

Aptly titled for the vanity plate on what is essentially its main character – a shiny new tricked-out Lexus – H4Z4RD has a lot of talent behind the camera. Scripted by Cheap Thrills and 68 Kill’s Trent Haaga, there’s a madcap energy to the writing that’s hard to find in more mainstream genre fare, and with Cub’s Jonas Govaerts on directing duties, it’s a gorgeous, slick-looking journey to take too. Albeit one that sadly never quite seems to equate to the sum of its wickedly ambitious parts.

This article contains spoilers for Tales of the Walking Dead episode 2.
One of the things Tales of the Walking Dead co-creator Channing Powell promised fans was something different. Powell said in an interview with Den of Geek that the show would “push the boundaries of the universe” and that the show “wanted to present a new option” for fans of long-running zombie television series The Walking Dead and its various spinoff properties. Given the sheer breadth of the franchise’s offerings, from the many web-only minisodes to the Talking Dead chat show to wrap up the night, that’s quite a task.
Just consider The Walking Dead itself. The show has clearly explored every element of horror short of extraterrestrial, from cities overrun with zombies akin to the best of George Romero to roving tribes of cannibals straight out of 1970’s Italy to body horror that would make Cronenberg jealous.

‘Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery’(‘Beltracchi — Die Kunst der Fälschung’). Wolfgang Beltracchi got away with forging art masterpieces for over 40 years. He may be egotistical and nihilistic, but his genius in undeniable. He managed to fool gallery owners, historians and investors with the stroke of a brush. This documentary follows his last days as a free man.
Join us and our special guest Sunday, February 13, 11:00 am Pst! Director and producer Arne Birkenstock will attend our virtual conversation. There are a lot of topics to discuss and we will receive feedback on first hand. Kino! Film Salon is a monthly online discussion of a German film.
Please RSVP at https://bit.ly/kinorsvpbeltracchi and the Zoom link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the event. Please don’t share this link directly (but do encourage your friends to RSVP!); our capacity is limited and admission will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
For nearly 40 years, Wolfgang Beltracchi fooled the international art world and was responsible for the biggest art forgery scandal of the postwar era. An expert in art history, theory and painting techniques, he tracked down the gaps in the oeuvres of great artists — Max Ernst, Fernand Leger, Heinrich Campendonk, Andre Derain and Max Pechstein, above all — and filled them with his own works. He and his wife Helene would then introduce them to the art world as originals.
What makes these forgeries truly one-of-a-kind is that they are never mere copies of once-existing paintings, but products of Beltracchi’s imagination, works “in the style of” famous early 20th-century artists. With his forgeries, he fooled renowned experts, curators and art dealers. The auctioneers Sotheby’s and Christie’s were hoodwinked, just like Hollywood star Steve Martin and other collectors throughout the world.
Winner of Best Documentary at the German Film Awards.

Watch the trailer here.
1. We watched Run Lola Run and cheered for the protagonist, an enabler of her boyfriend drug dealer. Do you also cheer for Wolfgang and Helene Beltracchi?
2. What made this caper so attractive to the audience?
3. Why do you think it won the German Prize for Best Documentary?
4. Why do you think they emphasized Max Ernst and his “genius” so much?
5. What do you think of Helene and their marriage? She mentions how they met and what she heard about his “profession” and we see their dynamic…what else do you think might or might not be mentioned about their marriage. He makes a comment about giving her a life of adventure.
6. Was this a victimless crime?
7. What do you think about Helene’s stating the dealers were happy to have art to sell
8. What do you think of the art dealer’s comment that his clients lost no money because they all benefitted from the forced sale of Beltracchi’s real estate.
9. Do you resonate with the thrill of lying and getting away with it?
10. Was their punishment commensurate with their crime?
11. What do you make of their current life?
12. This was Arne Birkentock’s third doc. He is now on his 13th. What do you think might have attracted Arne Birkenstock to make this doc?

Matt Damon was a certified Oscar winner and movie star by the time he took on the role of Jason Bourne for "The Bourne Identity" in 2002. Both Damon and director Doug Liman were feeling some anxiety, however, about shooting the love scene that comes about halfway through the otherwise action-driven film. Thankfully, Franka Potente, the star of "Run Lola Run," was there with a bottle of Jägermeister to give them a little liquid courage.
It's not the first time we've heard of an actor and director doing some drinking to loosen up before running through one or more scenes.

The Indian arm of Sony is planning to produce local content that has the potential to travel globally.
Speaking at Singapore’s Asia TV Forum and Market on Friday, Vivek Krishnani, MD at Sony Pictures Entertainment Films India, said: “We are strongly focusing on creating Indian IPs, which can crossover into the mainstream and therefore, to that extent, some of the content that we’re creating for certain Ott [streaming] platforms, does have the ability to appeal to audiences, not just Indian audiences, but audiences across geographies.”
“That’s where the next leap has to come from [for] Indian content creation, because you have to be able to be a player in the global platform, you have to create content like how, for example, you’ve seen Korean content now dominate the world,” Krishnani said. “Why can’t content from India do the same thing?
