On Jan. 19, 2001, Stacy Peralta’s skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys lit up the Sundance Film Festival, going on to earn multiple honors in Park City and, later, a feature film treatment, Lords of Dogtown. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Where the debris meets the sea, that’s the tight scope on Dogtown and Z-Boys. It’s a wild ride with eight boarders from Venice Beach, Calif., that was a deserved co-winner of the Audience Award for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. Director Stacy Peralta also deservedly garnered the director honor in the documentary category.
Carved through the waves and asphalt of Venice, Dogtown follows the daring exploits of a tight-‘n’-tough band of wayward teens, outsiders who assaulted the softblue world of ’70s surfing. Hardened from single-parent homes and charged with pent-up energies, they took to the waves with a take-no-prisoners style.

Cyberpunk 2077’s first (and only) Dlc, Phantom Liberty, is finally here. It’s been a long three years, but the wait is finally over. Plus, the game recently received a facelift that reinvigorated numerous mechanics and systems, which is a huge boon. While the Dlc adds new missions, weapons, and rides, the main draw is its new questline, which takes place in an equally new section of Night City, Dogtown.
If we could sum up the narrative of Phantom Liberty, it would be Ghost in the Shell meets Escape from New York, starring Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves. Sounds fun, right? You probably want to start this mission as soon as you can. Well, here’s how.
Technically, you don’t have to do anything too out of the ordinary to unlock Phantom Liberty’s content. The only requirement, aside from owning the Dlc, is completing the main story mission “Transmission,...

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 34 Episode 18
The Simpsons tries to prove music can be more than just revenge, but then it gets a little cringey, and turns superfans into stalker fans. “Fan-ily Feud” appears to take on the army of a certain former country singer gone pop goddess, whose name would probably be better left unsaid, but that would only spur the ire of BTS stans, justifiably requesting rebuttal. The episode would have benefited from a guest appearance from Taylor Swift, but if it hadn’t gone right, her next seven albums might have targeted the series as a bad breakup, a win-win situation, to be sure, for everyone involved.
The Simpsons have been making entreaties to Swift since Bart wrote “Thank you for 28 great years… Taylor Swift” on the chalkboard in “Dogtown,” season 28’s season finale. Lisa must have kept her as her number 2 Google alert.

Emily Ratajkowski didn’t always have an easy time landing major modelling gigs.
The 31-year-old podcast host recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times, where she discussed her journey into modelling, her high school years and how her height worked against her.
Ratajkowski described her high school, San Dieguito Academy, as “kind of a ‘Euphoria’ high meets’ Lords of Dogtown’ vibe.” However, Ratajkowski didn’t have a niche, and modelling didn’t even cross her mind as a potential career path.
When she got into UCLA, she chose to major in art due to her interest in mixed media. She enjoyed merging collages with her drawings but her parents disapproved, wondering what she would do with those interests in the career world.

Exclusive: Rocket Science has boarded worldwide sales on The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez, a film lifting the veil on one of surfing’s most enigmatic heroes, which will be introduced to potential buyers at the 2022 Cannes Market.
While most famously known as “Mr. Pipeline” for his mastery of one of the most dangerous waves in surfing, Gerry Lopez wrestled with a profound internal conflict; his fight to become the best surfer in the world with his dedication to yoga and Buddhist teachings. Gerry’s aggressive, unscrupulous surfing was in stark contrast to his calm demeanor in the tube. And this Zelig-like quality made Gerry wholly unique.
Gerry Lopez is as Zen as he is radical, and he transcends categorization. He’s an apex predator in the surf, one of the most influential surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, an entrepreneur, a family man, a movie star and a lifelong yogi.

For all his work promoting unknown filmmakers, it’s still a rare sight to spot the Karlovy Vary fest artistic director donning a T-shirt bearing a movie’s logo to introduce it at a screening. But the bold, blocky red letters of his “King Skate” casual wear seemed to suit Karel Och well during a late-night screening of Simon Safranek’s new docu about communist-era Czech skate punks.
The world premiere of the film, produced by Katerina Cerna of Prague’s Negativ, saw the heroes of the story — at least those surviving — take to the stage with their battered boards as crowds cheered in the Grand Hall of the Hotel Thermal.
In researching the project, says Safranek, “I just realized that the stories, the memories, are beautiful.”

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has landed another film project. It's an action comedy called Dogtown and it's based on the long-running comic book series Body Bags. The script for the film is being written by Kyle Ward, who also wrote the script for John Wick: Chapter 2.
The stylized and irreverent comic was created by Jason Pearson. Bautista will take on the role of Mack Delgado, "a professional bounty hunter tough enough to be called a "body bagger." Things take a turn for him when the teenage daughter he never knew he had turns up on his doorstep, hoping to reconnect with the father she lost long ago."
The movie is being produced by Bold Films and producer Gary Michael Walters had this to say in a statement:

This week, spy thriller Argo explode sonto UK screens and if America’s response is anything to go by, it will get audiences nationwide talking about not only the ‘so ridiculous, it must be true’ storyline, but also about Actor/Director Ben Affleck described by one national newspaper as “the most talented actor-turned-director since Clint Eastwood”. To celebrate the release of Argo , we’ve taken a look at other actors who have gone behind the lens to breathe a new lease of life into film direction:
1. Jon Favreau
After appearing in a number of rudimentary roles and doing voice work, Jon Favreau decided to take a risk and write himself and pal Vince Vaughan in what turned out to be their breakout film Swingers (1996). His talent now recognised on and off the camera meant that he could yoyo between the two, appearing in Dogtown (1996), Deep Impact (1998) and as a recurring character in sitcom Friends,...

Last week brought Woody Harrelson’s career-best performance in Rampart to the shelves, Oren Moverman’s brilliant follow-up to the Oscar-nominated The Messenger, and this week sees another great new selection of films getting their DVD/Blu-ray debut, as well as a host of classics getting the Blu-ray treatment.
Prepare for Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Spacey, Cameron Crowe, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the Devil.

Baltasar Kormákur’s Contraband & Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo & George Hickenlooper’s Casino Jack.

When you come across a newsworthy item that strikes your creative fancy and feeds the instinct to turn it into some sort of screenplay is that you are not the only supplicant sipping from this particular muse's font. Jack Abramoff himself would fully appreciate this, both as an unsuccessful Hollywood screenwriter/producer and as a functionally-intellectual piece of human shit. If an idea is good, someone else is probably going to have it, and so you're gonna have to be the first to the finish line with the finished product, or else you're going to be considered derivative and lesser than. A Bug's Life trumped Antz, Dante's Peak edged out Volcano, Capote outcapoted Infamous, Armageddon aerosmithed Deep Impact, Tombstone made Wyatt Earp its huckleberry -- the streets of Hollywood are paved with the corpses of lesser flicks that were released within months of similar tales. Alex Gibney, who has been...

Director known for his documentary about the making of the film Apocalypse Now
The films of the American director George Hickenlooper, who has died unexpectedly aged 47, straddled several genres, but he will be best remembered as a documentary maker thanks to his most celebrated work, Hearts of Darkness: A Film-maker's Apocalypse (1991). This riveting account of the troubled gestation of Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam war epic Apocalypse Now (1979) combined behind-the-scenes footage shot by Coppola's wife, Eleanor, with retrospective accounts by the cast and crew.
Hickenlooper observed "a strong parallel between Francis making the movie and the war itself. He really delved into the most sordid aspects of his own character." As Apocalypse Now's budget and schedule ran out of control – and its leading man, Martin Sheen, had a heart attack – Coppola was consumed by fears and self-doubt, as captured in the documentary. The film community(especially his home town of St. Louis) was stunned to hear of the death of director George Hickenlooper. The forty seven year old was found dead of natural causes in Denver, Co where he was helping his cousin John in his run for governor.
George left behind an impressive list of films. George’s debut as a professional director was the 1988 short Art,Acting,And The Suicide Chair:Dennis Hopper. Besides the initial shock that comes with the news that writer/director George Hickenlooper died in the midst of a whirlwind festival run for his latest film "Casino Jack" at the far too young age of 47 is the great irony that he reportedly passed away quietly of natural causes. For anyone who has followed Hickenlooper's career, the latter fact may come as an even greater surprise since even more so than his films themselves, he may be best known for the struggles he endured in getting them made, the product of a indefatigable love of film, and as his cousin, Denver mayor John Hickenlooper said in a statement to The Denver Post, "his unquenchable curiosity."
As the late Hickenlooper recounted in the foreword to his invaluable 1991 collection of interviews with directors and film critics, "Reel Conversations," such passion for the medium was evident from an early age when he arrived in Hollywood at 17 from St.

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah.
