Octavia Spencer has said that her aspirations in the film world were initially much smaller than being the Oscar-winning actress she became. In fact, she initially aspired to just work behind the scenes in the film world in an office capacity.
After working office jobs on a few films that shot in her native Alabama, Spencer eventually got a job in the casting department of “A Time to Kill” starring Matthew McConaughey. She convinced director Joel Schumacher to let her audition, and he cast her in a small role in the film. Her friend Taylor encouraged her to move to Los Angeles, and she began to get steady work as an actress. While she worked for 15 solid years in small parts on films and guest appearances on television shows, her career trajectory didn’t seem to be one that would make her a three-time Oscar nominee. Matthew McConaughey has long been known as the quintessential Hollywood leading man. It’s not just the actor’s Oscar-winning performances that have earned him that title, but also his dashing good looks. Since the 90s, the actor has been positioned as one of the entertainment industry’s leading heartthrobs.
This reputation even led to McConaughey winning the tag of People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2005. It helped that the actor was a frequent leading man in rom-coms for a time. But while Matthew McConaughey is undoubtedly easy on the eyes, the actor’s personal hygiene leaves something to be desired. In past interviews, McConaughey has stated that he does not use deodorants, and this caused an issue between himself and Kate Hudson at one point.

Before he made the disastrous Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher helmed the summer blockbuster film A Time to Kill starring Matthew McConaughey. The Interstellar actor was still a newcomer at the time, only having the cult film Dazed and Confused popularly in his portfolio. He was cast in the role after Schumacher pulled some strings, but two other famous stars were rejected before McConaughey’s casting.

Kevin Costner was a contender for the role and a much older actor than McConaughey. Costner was rejected because the film needed someone younger to play the up-and-coming lawyer. Interestingly, McConaughey is rumored to appear as the next big star in the Yellowstone franchise after Costner.

The Oscar winner sat down with People to celebrate the publication’s 50th anniversary, during which he talked through some of his most iconic roles, including his stint as the rom-com heartthrob. He recalled meeting his co-star before production began on the film.
“I remember we met on the Paramount lot — I believe it was the time — and those casting sort of meeting couches, especially for rom-coms, you want to see the chemistry between the two leads,” he said. “You want to see how the jive is. We’re not reading through the script. We’re not reading lines.”
He continued, “Immediately, we were comfortable with each other, and we jacked with each other, and we busted each other’s chops, and we laughed a lot.

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Early in his career, Gilbert was a horse wrangler in William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) and a bank robber in Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969). Years later, he took the lumps for Lee Majors’ Colt Seavers on the 1981-86 ABC action show The Fall Guy.
Though they weren’t friends at the time, Gilbert and Redford were in the same class at Van Nuys High School, graduating in 1954. They got together on George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when Redford...

The year 1990 saw the release of James Ellroy’s sweeping crime novel L.A. Confidential, which Ellroy wanted to be the most epic book about L.A. ever written. In his own eyes, the author accomplished that goal, calling his own work a “masterpiece” and one he did not envision making the transition to the big screen. Not that he really cared; Ellroy was always vocal about his disinterest in seeing his books adapted into movies, as he wasn’t particularly interested in the medium.
But there was a kindred spirit who similarly loved the City of Angels, and who wanted to tell a very big story about the place where he grew up. Curtis Hanson had been a director of adequate thrillers like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and The River Wild, but he was searching for a project that would allow him to tell a grand-scale story about Los Angeles.

Matthew McConaughey‘s career has had more ups and downs than a sentence delivered in his usual Texas twang. After a few small roles, McConaughey was cast opposite an equally unknown Renee Zellweger in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation” one of the many incarnations of that horror series. Then things suddenly seemed to blossom for the Texas actor and suddenly he had the lead in an adaptation of the John Grisham novel “A Time to Kill” and was on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine being hailed as the new Paul Newman. After a series of successful films, things seemed to go off track for McConaughey. He did a number of less than stellar romantic comedies and became more known for his tanned muscular torso than his acting talents.
McConaughey seemed to become aware of his career slump in the early 2010s and made a conscious change to redirect his career.

For a time in the 1990s, a film adaptation of a John Grisham novel was guaranteed to turn a tidy profit at the box office, if not mushroom into a full-on blockbuster. "The Firm," "The Pelican Brief" and "The Client" all made loads of money off of a built-in audience that just had to see how the lawyer-turned-bestselling author's latest book was brought to life by Hollywood's biggest stars. Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Tommy Lee Jones, and Susan Sarandon, among many others, were enlisted to turn these page-turners into big-screen spectacles. They were never better than over-produced B movies, but you didn't care because the material was never more than risible. Grisham wrote disposable legal thrillers that moved fast enough to get you past their myriad implausibilities, and there was nothing wrong with this.
"A Time to Kill" was a different animal. Based on Grisham's debut novel,...

Samuel L. Jackson believes a deleted scene from 'A Time To Kill' would have won him an Oscar. The 74-year-old actor has never won an acting Academy Award during his storied movie career but lamented how a powerful scene from Joel Schumacher's 1996 film -in which he plays a man on trial for killing two white men who abducted and raped his 10-year-old daughter – was cut, denying him an opportunity to claim a gong for Best Supporting Actor. In an interview with Vulture, Samuel said: "In 'A Time To Kill', when I kill those guys, I kill them because my daughter needs to know that those guys are not on the planet anymore and they will never hurt her again – that I will do anything to protect her. Samuel L. Jackson is sharing his frustrations over a scene cut from 1996’s A Time to Kill that he believes would have put him at the front of the line for Academy Award consideration.
In a recent interview with Vulture, the actor said he was shocked to learn that moments he felt were important in the Joel Schumacher-directed film were “taken out” during the “editing process.” Specifically, a scene that he felt could have scored him a trophy.
“The things they took out kept me from getting an Oscar. Really, motherfuckers? You just took that shit from me?” he told the outlet. “My first day working on that film, I did a speech in a room with an actor and the whole fucking set was in tears when I finished. I was like, ‘Okay. I’m on the right page.‘ That shit is not in the movie! And I know why it’s not.

Samuel L. Jackson believes that excessive editing ruined a performance that was worthy of Oscar consideration.
In a new Vulture profile, Jackson said he thought his performance in Joel Schumacher’s A Time to Kill would be a vehicle to lift him into Academy Award consideration.
That lasted until he saw the finished film.

Samuel L. Jackson is speaking out about another missed opportunity he had at winning an Oscar for one of his early films.
Last year, the 74-year-old actor told The Times that he thinks he should have won the 1995 Academy Award for best supporting actor for “Pulp Fiction” instead of Martin Landau (“Ed Wood”).
Jackson believes he was robbed of a second chance at taking home a golden statuette just a few years later for his role in Joel Schumacher’s 1996 legal drama “A Time to Kill”, which also starred Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. In the Joel Schumacher-directed film, adapted from John Grisham’s novel of the same name, Jackson portrayed a man on trial for killing the two men who raped his daughter.

Samuel L. Jackson told The Times last year that he deserved to win the Oscar for best supporting actor over Martin Landau (“Ed Wood”) at the 1995 Academy Awards. In a new interview with Vulture, the actor said he was robbed of a second chance to win an Oscar just a couple years later with Joel Schumacher’s 1996 legal drama “A Time to Kill,” co-starring Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. The John Grisham adaptation starred Jackson as a man on trial in Mississippi for killing the two men who raped his daughter.

Matthew McConaughey didn’t come out of his Dazed and Confused days as an immediate leading man.

McConaughey may have had two breakthroughs in his career. His first breakthrough came when he scored a memorable role in the Richard Linklater project Dazed and Confused. The film would help launch his film career, but his second breakthrough would officially launch him into movie star status.
A Time to Kill was a 1996 drama that starred McConaughey as a fresh-faced lawyer attempting to successfully defend a client accused of murder. It featured an ensemble cast that included Samuel L. Jackson and Sandra Bullock.

When you star in a film as disastrous as Joel Schumacher's 1997 fiasco "Batman & Robin," you've got to have a sense of humor about the whole ordeal ... that is, if you survive it. George Clooney, who was the fourth and final Caped Crusader of the phase launched by Tim Burton's "Batman" in 1989, did ultimately make his mark as a movie star in Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight" and David O. Russell's "Three King," which has allowed him to self-deprecatingly boast over the last few decades that he was the man who killed the franchise.
The truth of the matter is that Warner Bros. did the series in by rushing the film into production after the success of 1995's "Batman Forever." Schumacher, who'd just completed "A Time to Kill," lacked the time to develop a serviceable story with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, so they basically made the film up as they went along.

Schumacher, who'd just completed "A Time to Kill," lacked the time to develop a serviceable story with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, so they basically made the film up as they went along.

Had Warner Bros. given Joel Schumacher an extra year to develop and shoot "Batman & Robin," it's reasonable to expect that he would've turned around another agreeably campy lark on par with "Batman Forever;" ergo, from the fans' perspective, it's probably a blessing that the studio rushed him from 1996's "A Time to Kill" straight into his second Dark Knight yarn. Had Schumacher been granted more time to refine the film with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, he might've stuck with the franchise — which, spinning this alternate timeline forward, could've knocked George Clooney out of Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight" and obviated the need for Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins." A series-hobbling Bat-bomb is a more than acceptable tradeoff here.
There were, however, certain elements of "Batman & Robin" that were always going to fall flat, most notably the casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Had Warner Bros. been smart...
