It's easy to take for granted the strangeness of the creatures from Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film "Alien." Because that film was such a hit, and because it has spawned many sequels, comics, video games, and Halloween costumes in the last 45 years, the Xenomorphs no longer seem weird or even all that creepy. One must cast one's mind back to 1979 to recall that, yes, the aliens were horrifyingly off-putting, bizarre, and terrifying; the title is both a noun and an adjective. By the time the PG-13-rated "Alien vs. Predator" came out in 2004, audiences knew that Xenomorphs forcibly incubated their young inside people's bodies. In 1979, that notion was novel.
To remind audiences: a Xenomorph begins its life inside a three-foot leathery egg. When the egg hatches, a spider-crab monster leaps out and attaches itself to a victim's mouth. Over the course of a few days, it inserts an ovipositor...

Silly Done Right
January featured plenty of highs and lows on Horror Queers. We started with the brilliant sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (listen) and the silly subversiveness of German film Killer Condom (listen). Then we descended into trash for two weeks with The Covenant (listen) and The Roommate (listen).
Thankfully we wrapped the month on a high with Stuart Gordon‘s playful, gory and mean-spirited adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft‘s Re-Animator (1985).
Featuring a career defining performance by Jeffrey Combs, the film follows eccentric burgeoning scientist Herbert West (Combs) as he befriends/seduces aspiring doctor Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), much to the chagrin of Dan’s girlfriend, Megan (Barbara Crampton) and her secret admirer, creepy Dr. Hill (David Gale).
As the experiments – and the corpses – begin to pile up, it’s unclear who the real villain is. Will Herbert successfully test his serum? Will Dan live to become a doctor? Or...

After kicking off 2024 with discussions on the better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II (listen), the surprisingly progressive Killer Condom (listen) and the very gay (and very terrible) The Covenant, we’re wrapping up January with a conversation about Christian E. Christiansen‘s pseudo-remake of Single White Female: The Roommate.
The Roommate sees Sara (Minka Kelly), a young design student from Iowa, arrive for college in Los Angeles. Her wealthy roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester), is more than eager to take Sara under her wing and show her the ropes. The two become close, but when Sara begins to branch out and make more friends on campus, Rebecca becomes resentful. This brings out her more psychotic tendencies as she embarks on a mission to prove that Sara only needs one best friend: her.

Forgiven for Forgetting
After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!
With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.
The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.
Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

After kicking off the year with Trace’s favorite Hellraiser film, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we’re taking a hard left turn into camp, politics, and a German take on New York City with Killer Condom.
We’ve previously discussed director Martin Walz‘s film in our editorial series (here) and it was a delight to revisit the sly, subversive tale of prophylactics that bite off men’s dicks. The hero of the tale is gay cop Luigi Mackeroni (Udo Samel), who has a trans ex, a mildly homophobic partner, and a twinky sex worker love interest.
As police captains and politicians dispute the dangers of the penis-munching condoms, Mackeroni must use his considerable <ahem> talent to find Smirnoff, the Russian mad scientist, and the mastermind behind the plan to eliminate Germany…er…New York City’s gay population.

After wrapping up 2023 with look at New French Extremity in Inside (listen), horror musicals in Anna and the Apocalypse (listen) and the Best Horror Films of 2023 (listen), we’re kicking off our first official episode of 2024 with a lengthy discussion of Tony Randel‘s better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), which just celebrated its 35th anniversary!
Hellbound: Hellraiser II picks up hours after the first film ended, seeing Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) confined to a mental hospital after she tells the authorities that her father was betrayed by his evil, adulterous wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), and is now being tormented in hell by sadomasochistic demons called Cenobites. Few believe Kirsty, except the thrill-seeking Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham), who is so intrigued by her frightening stories that he teams up with a newly resurrected Julia. When they open the gates to Hell and unleash the Cenobites,...

Motivational Growth is the absurd horror-comedy by writer/director/editor Don Thacker that calls to mind other absurd films in a similar vein such as Return of the Killer Tomatoes or Little Shop of Horrors.
30-something Ian (Adrian Digiovanni) is a recluse, hiding from the world in his brothel of an apartment where he watches bizarre shows on his ancient TV and contemplates suicide. Oh and then there’s The Mold (voiced by Jeffrey Combs) in Ian’s bathroom, a smooth talking entity that tries to get Ian to clean up his act. But The Mold is up to something sinister and its plans go beyond the quiet life of Ian in what ends up a battle of good and evil.

Swiss artist Hans Ruedi Giger, better known as H.R. Giger, has died at the age of 74. The celebrated Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer sustained injuries in a fall and died in hospital yesterday afternoon.
Giger's designs were said to be influenced by the works of the American horror fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft, and his unique style went on to influence a generation of filmmakers following their utilisation for the title creature in Sir Ridley Scott's iconic sci-fi horror masterpiece "Alien".
He also did designs for Alejandro Jodorowsky's unproduced "Dune" film along with movies such as "Species," "Future-Kill," "Killer Condom" and "Prometheus".

Killer Condom (1996) Director: Martin Walz Stars: Udo Samel, Peter Lohmeyer, Marc Richter "The rubber that rubs you out!" Killer Condom is a strange beast. Despite every instinct your brain would suggest, it's not your average high-concept horror movie. It's not even typical for a braindead, no-budget Troma film. This is a movie about a psychotic prophylactic where the filmmakers actually tried. I know; it's weird. Probably the most interesting...

It’s 1956 and in the local asylum, the most evil and diabolical serial killer is about to be executed after a long and brutal killing spree.
Before he goes out, he takes the opportunity to steal one more kill before bowing out dramatically by reciting a lengthy quote from the bible.
This beauty of an opener is quite startling and promising and better yet, it displays some brutal and effective make up work, which is actually a step up from Asylum’s usual offerings.
Moving to the present, we are introduced to a group of 20-something kids heading out into the woods for a weekend of sex, drugs and rock n roll to escape the pressure’s of every day life.
Along the highway, while passing a nearby graveyard, Jerry (Katrina Bowdon) blurts out for everyone to hold their breath – because if there is an...

Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil
Stars: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss | Written by Eli Craig, Morgan Jurgenson | Directed by Eli Craig
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil has been on my filmic radar for what seems like forever – as a fan of both Tyler Labine (whose TV series Dead Last was criminally overlooked) and Alan Tudyk, who was last seen as John Turturro’s camp man-servant come computer hacker in Transformers 3, I was psyched to see the pair headline a movie – and a horror comedy no less, a genre which has spawned some of my favourite movies of all time: Evil Dead 2, Re-Animator, and Return of the Living Dead.
The film sees two hillbilly buddies, played by Tudyk and Labine, on vacation in the woods, however they’re not alone. Also hanging out in the woods are a group of college kids doing the typical backwoods horror movie cliches – boozing,...

Good news, Alien fans! H.R. Giger‘s wife, Carmen Scheifele, has reported the Swiss surrealist painter is working on the “Untitled Alien Prequel,” reports AvP Galaxy. She says that Giger is on-board for the prequel. It will be a 3D film – there might be two and that it takes place before the first film. H.R. Giger, of course, created the Alien creature as well as various set pieces in the original Alien, including the Space Jockey and its spacecraft.
Hans Rudolf “Ruedi” Giger is a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer. He won an Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for his design work on the film Alien. Giger’s style and thematic execution have been influential. His design for the Alien was inspired by his painting Necronom IV and earned him an Oscar in 1980. Toxie is back with his muscular arms and…..his looks. Director Steve Pink will lead the reboot project for “The Toxic Avenger,” which the remake rights were acquired last April from Troma Films by Corwin’s Original Media. The script will be written by Pink and Daniel C. Mitchell. The new producers are planning to create “an environmentally-conscious action comedy.” In the original cult films, the nerd hero Melvin was dumped into a vat of toxic waste. He was transformed into a hideous being with super-strength and battled bad guys. And women loved him in the movie. “The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country—wait, that’s not big enough—what the world needs right now,” said Pink to Deadline. Gig Patta’s Take: “The Toxic Avenger” is a classic cult B-movie with bad acting, horrible dialogue, over-the-top violence, blood and nudity. No matter what—this will be a...

Lusty retro-horror act Calabrese continues to gain momentum in 2009. With the cult success of their albums Thirteen Halloweens and The Traveling Vampire Show (see our review here) and a new video for their single “Vampires Don’t Exist”, the band shows no signs of gearing back on the throttle. Having already been a featured at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors and with regular coverage on Fangoria Musick, it only seemed supernatural that the blood-drinking brothers get a feature interview.
Currently the band is getting ready to lock themselves away in their tomb to record new material for their next release. I, however, had the chance to catch up with vocalist Bobby Calabrese and guitarist Jimmy Calabrese to answer a few questions about the band. Their take on horror and vampirism, and what makes up their successful “all in the family” act.

One-eyed Monster, just out on DVD from Liberation Entertainment, is a horror/comedy (with an emphasis on the comedy) set in the mountain wilderness of Mammoth Lakes, CA, where a porn shoot is taking place with adult-film legends Ron (“The Hedgehog”) Jeremy and Veronica Hart (playing themselves) plus a group of younger cast and crew. During the filming of one sequence, Jeremy can’t get his johnson to respond, and so he steps outside for some fresh air—where he’s possessed by an alien that appears as a flash of light in the sky.
When the director (Jeff Denton) subsequently asks Jeremy if his tallywhacker is now up to the task, the actor replies in the affirmative. Jumping back into the scene (and onto Hart), Jeremy puts his bratwurst to the test. All seems well…until he starts to convulse and Hart starts to scream. Cut is quickly called...

Adult film actors Ron Jeremy and Veronica Hart have teamed up with mainstream actress Amber Benson to conjure up One-Eyed Monster, a comedy homage to classic horror films such as Alien and The Thing. The story is the cast and crew of an adult film become stranded in a blizzard, and things go horribly awry after Ron Jeremy's crotch becomes possessed by an aggressive alien entity. Ron Jeremy's rabid member goes on a bloody killing spree, intent on spreading its seed through the entire planet.
Films with killer dicks can be surprisingly entertaining. Yes, I just said that. It's true! Go watch Killer Condom. It's good! Surprisingly good! Whether or not Killer Condom is a fluke in the killer dick sub-genre remains to be seen; One-Eyed Monster could outdo it!

The gay-and-lesbian-themed Logo channel is premiering a brand new on-air and on-line Thursday-night film series called Graveyard Shift this week on December 4. Among the horror and cult films to be broadcast in this weekly midnight showcase is Dead Serious (pictured), from writer/director Joe Sullivan and writer/producer Michael J. Hein, showing Dec. 11.
Dead Serious, which has played numerous festivals but has yet to secure DVD distribution, tells of a religious zealot and his terrorist cult who take over a gay bar in New York City as part of a plot to rid the world of homosexuality. Little do they know, however, that they’ve incurred the wrath of the undead. Graveyard Shift, which is hosted by a group of late-night “interns,” begins this week with the television premiere of Jaymes Thompson’s The Gay Bed And Breakfast Of Terror, in which five homosexual couples vacationing at the Sahara Salvation...
