Dev Patel’s seething directorial debut joins a thriving genre, from the bloody violence of Tarantino and John Wick to the comic rage of The First Wives Club
In real life, most of us don’t get that many opportunities to exact revenge on someone. A passive-aggressive comeback maybe, but that’s not quite the same. In the movies, however, as in Greek mythology, vengeance is one of the driving forces of storytelling: revenge films, both aggressively bloody and more benign, provide cathartic wish-fulfilment for our own petty grievances and unsettled scores. In Dev Patel’s seething directorial debut Monkey Man, the quest is familiar – as his streetwise hero seeks retribution for his mother’s murder – but the sheer gusto of his vengeance is invigorating, down to driving a dagger into a villain’s throat with his teeth.

At the revamped Golden Globes, broadcast on CBS for the first time, the news of the night was that, save for one or two genuine shocks, everything unfolded pretty much as had been widely predicted.
First-time host Jo Koy presided over the telecast, which took place, as always, at the Beverly Hilton. During his largely jokeless monologue, he did a bit about how Barry Keoghan’s penis in “Saltburn” somehow ended up as Bradley Cooper’s nose in “Maestro,” and made an Ozempic joke that involved “The Color Purple.” So one could say that the biggest snub of the night was the one Koy created for his own career.
There were, however, some key categories that held surprises — especially in that Globes voters seemed so allergic to “Barbie” that we could almost hear them say, “Bye, Barbie!”

In talking with Diane Keaton, you get the sense she is most comfortable discussing anything — her beloved mother, her impressive co-stars, the photograph she pulled from a coffee table book about poor dental hygiene she found at a flea market — other than herself.
If she were to talk about herself, there would be a lot to cover, beginning with an early career filled with New York theater, the Godfather films and a prolific partnership with Woody Allen. She has since accumulated four Oscar nominations — she la-di-da-ed her way to a win for 1977’s Annie Hall — with the films Reds and Looking for Mr. Goodbar proving her dramatic muscle, while titles like 1996’s The First Wives Club and Something’s Gotta Give cemented her as one of Hollywood’s greatest onscreen comediennes. Billy Porter Broke Barriers on Stage and on TV. Now, He’s Shifting His Focus to His ‘Original Dream’
Billy Porter is three decades into a career he was repeatedly told would never happen.
A Black, queer artist with a booming voice and indelible screen and stage presence, Porter has ascended to extraordinary heights by defying those expectations.
“It’s been a wild, unexpected, glorious ride to get to this place of knowing and living what was possible then to what is possible now,” he tells Variety. “Who I am now was an impossibility then.”
Now a Grammy, Tony and Emmy-winning legend, the 53- year-old will be honored on Dec. 1 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The “Kinky Boots” and “Pose” star was surprised by news of the honor, even if his collaborators aren’t.

When acclaimed composer Marc Shaiman read that Billy Eichner was making the film “Bros” he thought to himself: “A gay rom-com? I’m the king of rom-com, and I’m gayer than a goose! Who else are you going to hire for this?” Shaiman has created music for classics in the genre, such as “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When Harry Met Sally.” So was a natural fit for the first gay themed romantic comedy from a major studio. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Not only did Shaiman craft a gentle but assured score for the movie, he helped Eichner shape the original song “Love Is Not Love,” which marks the emotional climax of the story. The night before shooting the scene in which Eichner’s Bobby confesses his love for Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), the actor decided that his speech needed to become “something bigger.” Eichner approached Shaiman with about ten minutes of song lyrics.

After Jessica Knoll’s 2015 best-seller Luckiest Girl Alive was optioned early on, she was determined to be the one to bring the story to life for the screen. The only caveat: She didn’t have any experience in screenwriting.
“I was completely 100 percent obsessed [and] fixated on being the one to adapt it myself, even though I didn’t have any screenwriting experience. I would have these conversations with my agent constantly: ‘How do we do this? How do we get them to give me a shot? I know if they’ll just give me a shot that I can do this,'” Knoll told The Hollywood Reporter.
While Knoll quips that she was considered “cheap labor,” she ultimately signed on to not only adapt the novel for the screen but to serve as an executive producer. The dual titles see her following squarely...

Bette Midler is finally revealing why “The First Wives Club” didn’t get a second shot.
The classic 1996 film starred Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn as a trio of jilted women who seek revenge on their respective former spouses. Midler’s “Hocus Pocus 2” co-star Sarah Jessica Parker played the mistress Midler’s husband (Dan Hedaya) was cheating with in the film.
Stockard Channing, Maggie Smith, Rob Reiner, Marcia Gay Harden, Victor Garberm Timothy Olyphant, J.K. Simmons, Jon Stewart, and Gloria Steinem also starred. Based on the 1992 novel by Olivia Goldsmith, the Hugh Wilson-directed comedy grossed 180 million at the global box office. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music.
Now, over 25 years later, Midler opened up about why the studio did not greenlight a sequel.
“I used to lobby for ‘First Wives Club 2,’ but there were political reasons they didn’t want to do that again.

Clair Voyance was three years old the first time she watched Hocus Pocus. She can still remember the sound the VHS tape made, and the way a blanket transformed into a makeshift cape when it was wrapped around her shoulders. But she wasn’t focused on the film’s child stars as they navigated their Halloween adventure. No, all attention was on the Sanderson Sisters. The three witches, played by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, flounced on screen, singing “I Put A Spell on You” to a transfixed and delighted audience.

Hugh Wilson's 1996 film, "The First Wives Club," is a hysterical comedy about three middle-aged women who partner up to seek revenge on their ex-husbands after being dumped for younger women. Gentle Annie (Diane Keaton), superficial Elise (Goldie Hawn), and brazen Brenda (Bette Midler) make up the vengeful trio, and their differing personalities clash in hilarious ways that produce comedy gold.
Watching the brilliant comedic chemistry between Keaton, Hawn, and Midler, it seems like it would've been obvious that the film was going to be a hit, but it wasn't. Everyone, including the director and screenwriter, thought the film...

Refresh for updates…On Monday, a number of prominent Hollywood figures took to social media to mourn the closure of Arclight Cinemas.
“Well this sucks,” tweeted Knives Out and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. “Every single person who worked at the Arclight loved movies, and you felt it. Sending love to every usher, manager and projectionist who rocked that blue shirt and made it such a special place.”
Meanwhile, Barry Jenkins—the Oscar winner behind Moonlight, and upcoming Amazon series The Underground Railroad—simply tweeted, “F**K.”
Writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood, too, felt the hurt, tweeting, “This is so painful. The Arclight is my go-to. Clean, great sound, assigned stadium seating, great popcorn, usher movie introductions. A true movie-going experience.”
Roland Emmerich, the writer-director behind films including Midway and Independence Day, thanked ArcLight and Pacific Theatres (which is also closing) for the “many wonderful cinematic experiences” they provided.

Joining Snoop and Arquette is Lou Beatty Jr., Tasie Lawrence (“The First Wives Club”), Megan Sousa and a slew of social media influencers including Anthony “Scruncho” McKinley, Tom “Tiny” Lister Jr. and Haha Davis.
“Growing up, dominos was a way of life and a way of culture. Not only is it just a game — it’s a recipe for human connection and human communication. If you’ve sat down with a stranger to play dominos, you’ve met a friend,...

In The First Wives Club, when Goldie Hawn’s fading Hollywood star Elise Elliot drunkenly absorbs the indignity of being offered the role not of beautiful, young protagonist Monique but of her mother, she observes that Connery would likely play Monique’s ...
